So many people complain about range and charging taking a while at these charging stations... but the thing these people don't realize is you can start every day with a full "tank". It's very likely you would only have to use a charging station outside your home a handful of times per year. The rest of the time you charge it at home while you sleep and wake up with a full battery. Unless you're doing a long trip, or have a day where you are gonna drive hundreds of miles, then you should never have to use an external charger. Just plug it in at home and every day you can go right to work or school or wherever and not have to stop at the gas station on the way.

In an apartment situation, the best you could maybe do is trickle charge with a standard outlet and an extension cord if you could park close to the building. Which wouldn’t be enough to fully charge every day in most instances.

I agree letting capitalism sort it out would be ideal but that would mean stopping the massive subsidies to the oil industry which would immediately spike the price of gas. That would drive a LOT of EV sales, as the math would be far more favorable but it would hurt anyone who can't shell out the cash to get an EV. So just saying let capitalism sort it out is not a workable solution as it causes far too much short term pain for those with the least amount of money.

This is funny. As a dealer let me tell you the best EV to buy is...none. Values are not crashing, they are continuing what they have done from day one. Teslas have some used market but everything else is 20 cents on the dollar at 18 months. Market analysis expects most EV's to be effectively valueless in another two years. "Luxury" EV's will see the worst loss. If you really intend to never sell it, and junk it when the battery dies, maybe. Otherwise you are looking at near 100% loss at future trade-in. Before any of you try and argue, if there was money to be made in EV's I'd be buying them. Makes no difference to me what people drive as long as I make a profit. That said, the EV market is so bad I would genuinely have to think twice if you offered to give me one.

Don’t forget about the ELECTRICAL GRID!
@stephkent273612 сағат бұрын
I disagree. There may be some issues locally where the infrastructure is capped out and needs more transmission lines (SoCal, NYC, etc) but if the grid is so fragile we can't run an extra 6-12KW per house a few hours a night it means we don't have the ability to build new homes, industry, commerce, etc. Hell, it means that if another 10% of homes and apartments added central air we'd be screwed.

Because people are not educated about EVs, their demand is artificially lowered because stubborn people don't buy EV.

how about Auto Makers make affordable EV and not worry about any incentives, just a thought

Adaxum is building something special. Secured my ADX tokens during the presale phase!
@junehanzawa516513 сағат бұрын
You guys all have to understand that ALL new technologies all cost way more than they should at the start. It has NOTHING to do with incentives. The first cell phones were over $4,000 in the 80's, so more like 8 or $10,000 in today's money. The first flat panel TV's were $25,000 around the year 2000. The first automobiles were all over $100,000 in today's money.
@JasonTaylor-po5xc13 сағат бұрын
What a lot of folks forget is that the first automobiles were very unreliable (even songs written about that fact), road network didn't exist yet, and there were no gas stations. It was literally just a hobby toy for the rich - very impractical. ICE vehicles have had 120 years to mature and evolve, EVs will follow a similar path but much faster.
@junehanzawa516513 сағат бұрын
@JasonTaylor-po5xc Correct. Today's people no clue how much worse and rougher that was and how much worse the FUD was for the automobile then. EV's are already on par, and even better, than ICE vehicles today on many levels and instances. Their costs are dropping rapidly, because they are cheaper to build with so many fewer parts, (roughly 30,000 vs 2,000). There are DC Fast chargers everywhere and 3 to 4 new stations are completing their builds each week. Yet, the FUD continues.

The other thing driving down prices is first adopters are all but saturated at the same time that greater choice is hitting the market.

A Chinese EV is probably going to be similar to a Chinese sofa, 10-20% smaller than the average American is used too. The difference seems small but it’s a difference you’re going to notice. The ergonomics of 10-20% smaller don’t work for my big, American hands where the off switch on things falls inconveniently, right underneath my thumb. But less resources used translates to a cheaper price, so it’s a tradeoff, I s’pose.
@isaac19842811 сағат бұрын
Let’s be honest; Those rich snobs and everyone else who wanted an EV has already bought one so even though their prices have reduced the past 2 years, the rest of the public isn’t really interested due to the lack of charging infrastructure and inconvenience like people living in apartments.

I got brand new 2025 Model 3 for $1,000 and next day I received $8,000 check from Tesla.
@JYLee-rr1sy13 сағат бұрын
Teslas are not nearly as cheap as they are making it sound. The Tesla Plaid referenced on Cars & Bids is an old model 2021. 2022 and newer are easily in the 80k ballpark. There's even an old 2021 plaid that is $116k.
I think the range anxiety and infrastructure problem is the biggest hurdle to adoption. Tesla, for example, cannot roll-out as many super charges to equal something close to the density of gas stations until the demand is there...but the demand isn't there because of the lack of infrastructure. Chicken and the egg problem. I guess the Biden administration was supposed to support the scaling of EV charging but produced what like a few charging stations with billions of dollars?? Just completely squandered / embezzled the money. Either way, I think EVs (looking at TESLA) can overcome the demand hurdle via autonomy. Anecdotally, I hear more people talking about FSD (particularly v13) and getting interested in TESLA products based on the autonomy value proposition alone.

The difference with China adopting EVs versus the US I see (someone who hasn't been to the US) is that China's car culture is different; The average household in major cities do not drive their car often, they have infinitely more reliable public transportation which they can rely on for their day to day and crossing certain provinces requires paperwork, additionally, getting a license plates is literally a gamble (for ICE cars); The private vehicle in China for the most case are nothing more than status symbols. Compared to most of the US which having a car is basically a neccessity, range and charging infrastructure is definitely going to be a factor most Americans. Also China has heavy tax subsidy not only for their buyers (espacially when it comes to getting said number plates), but also their automakers who are heavily incetivised by the state as part of its Made-In-China-2025 campaign, far more than Biden's. Plus the usual, lax(er) regulatory systems, lower working wages and a one-upmanship mentality the society has heavily contribute to its dirt-cheap EVs coming out nearly every week. EVs are a great car for certain lifestyles mostly if your private vehicle is not your main mode of transport. or your are privilaged enough to have a private parking with your private wall chargers, or you have a 2nd ICE car. But for the most of us who have neither some or all the top, EVs looks like its being forced upon us by overly EV elitist and out-of-touch politicians. Doug really needs to travel outside of US and europe for a while, his opinions is very US-centric.

USA oil = Subsidy = profit = lobby = politics..........USA is wearing forced blinders due to oil industry while rest of the world is progressing with tech and ground infrastructure to hopefully make a dent in climate problems. Tariffs will hurt us in the long run.

"they're more reliable" (as almost every EV maker struggles with lots of software glitches "they're cheaper to own" (as the very podcast we are watching is about them being the fastest depreciating cars you can own)
@tedliu269312 сағат бұрын
EVs are not cheap to make. The are actually more labor intensive if you take the making and recycling of the battery pack into consideration. Chinese EVs are cheaper because of the cheaper labor costs.

I drive for free now every month since my Tesla is paid for and I have free overnight charging with Tesla energy. Piss and moan all you want but you can't beat free transportation. What ice car can give you that? Not to mention I never have to go to a gas station.
