you should make a video about how to determine which move to play after the entire hippo setup is completed. sometimes the engine say c5, f5, O-O, g5, b5, e5, or d5 most of the time, and i think it would be incredibly helpful, at least for me to know in which types of positions those specific moves are strong, and maybe the plans following them. keep up the good work bro, really appreciate all the videos you’re putting out❤

Thank you for all your excellent videos on this opening! I have posted about this elsewhere on another video but since it is so important, I have to disagree with e6 being the required move. The rule is (as defined by Pafu) that whenever you see a knight and a bishop in the field on opposite sides, where the bishop is targeting a central square (like c4 or f4), the move that must be played is h6 or a6 (the side where the knight is). This is because after e6, (and once Black's appropriate knight is developed) White can bring the knight to b5 and then sacrifice either the knight or bishop on e6, retaking with the remaining piece and smashing our position for the entire game. h6/a6 prevents this. If White still wants to sac the bishop on f7, let him! The knight isn't coming in and a proper defense for Black is more than available and with precise play, Black reaches the end of the middlegame, ahead.

Firstly, you got it Mike! Thanks for tuning in for the Hippopotamus Defense content. And also things for sharing these great thoughts. And this is very true what you're saying here... without Nbd7 being played, Bxf7+ is simply a big mistake for white! So, ya moves like h6 or a6 work!

I am interested in your thoughts about 1...b6. I have been playing that and find that both of the 3 pawn centers are not much of a problem. Against these two variations I do NOT enter into a Hippo but instead end up in semi Hippos that are rather decent. The rest of the time I can just play for a normal Hippo. I am sure you have looked at this. Any thoughts? Have you done a video on this? I enjoy your videos and wish you were getting more views but who knows, maybe some day. Thanks.

Hey! Ya b6 also works, I think it can be a little hard to develop the kingside sometimes if we play b6 right away but I've done it plenty of times myself and it usually works out just fine. Nice thing there too is that you can go into a regular Owen's Defense if you like the variation white played into.
@simonsmith3030

I prefer the b6 Hippo against an 1e4 player. From a white perspective, he must play c4 or f4. 1e4 players usually prefer the f4 push BUT against 1e4 b6, White's best development involves an early Nf3. So if Black begins with 1...b6 Owens Defence, White must play c4 at some point; a move 1e4 players are often uncomfortable with...

@TheChessGiant
@TheChessGiant 5 ай бұрын
Great question Matthew! In that case I would probably go for b6/Bb7/e6/d6/Nbd7/Ne7.... and at any point g6 is an option if white plays d4 at some point in there. It's hard if they never do though.... as two Hippos cannot play against one another. But, you could have two Pseudo-Hippos or even (as black) play a move like e5 at some point to free up g6 and Bg7. Hope this helps! Thanks, Solomon 🦛🦛🦛🦛

c4 our gameplan doesn't change! The usual 1. ...g6 2. ...Bg7 3. ...d6 works fantstic. However, against 1. b3, the full Hippopotamus Defense simply isn't possible unless they play Nc3 or d4 or something that blocks the bishop's reign.

How to proceed after the set up is complete. I have my super-defense structure set up, the opponent is limited on moves, and it's time to start a forward push to get their king, but I have such a hard time picking the first moves of the mid-game. Do I push g or b pawns and get a knight behind it? Or push out the c or f pawn to attack the center that way? I think I may have seen suggested moving one of the center pawns again too. I don't feel like I ever see any strong routes forward if I get a classical set-up from my opponent. I've been recently trying moving g or b pawn again on their castling side, moving the knight behind it, and attempting to pawn storm their king, but am often finding myself stuck without many easy pawn moves forward, and often having to start defending before I can open their king. Moving pawn f7-f5 used to be my go-to, but then I frequently found my king getting attacking through that diagonal that was now open. How are you deciding what to do after the opening has been set up?

GREAT idea Johny! Thanks for sharing this. Will definitely have to make a video on the pawn breaks that black has and how to choose one.

What should we do if White plays 3 .e5, or even 2. d5? The center pawns are trying to preempt my center pawn set up. Also, I've had problems with white playing 2. Bb5+. I block with Nd7, and they usually make the exchange. I know what white is doing is wrong, but I'm not sure how to exploit it. These could be a good source for a video, along with videos along the lines of "How to Counter Stupid (er, non-book) Moves in x" series.
@TheChessGiant
@TheChessGiant Жыл бұрын
Hey Daren! Ya I'll look to make a video on what to do in that situation with white pushing the central pawns. Also, when it comes to the bishops, if they take one of our knights out, there's no way to exploit it necessarily. We simply continue the game with the bishop pair which is in our advantage if we can manage to make pawn breaks and eventually make the game more open than closed.
@michaels4255

If it goes down to an endgame, or sometimes even late middle game, the bishop pair will work in your favor with less material on the board.
