I did it. I went to my asian market and purchased 7 of the most recommended fish sauces! We tried all of these fermented sauces blindly and gave honest feed back to my personal palate. The reactions are harsh as I could hardly reccommend any one to taste fish sauce on its own.

FISH SAUCE TASTES GREAT IN FOOD!
Try this recipe:
1/4 Cup Fish Sauce
1/4 Cup Water
1/4 Cup Lime Juice
2 Tbls Sugar
2 each garlic, chopped
2 each thai chili, chopped
Mix together and eat with fried eggs and rice or banh xeo or spring rolls. YUMMM

Hello! Just found your channel and this particular vid! Great test and review. I never knew about Aroy-D until seeing this vid. Just got a bottle off of Amazon - it is excellent and *very* smooth. I will be using it much more often. For the record: my fish sauce progression has been to go from Squid to Flying Lion to Red Boat. Now, I can add Aroy-D to my pantry. Great Job!

My great-grandfather created Squid Brand and it’s amazing to see that people still use it and love it today!!! Of course I’m biased ;) but if you watch Gordon Ramsey or Martha Stewart, they also use Squid Brand in their cooking. My uncle (so my great-grandfather’s grandson) also created Megachief!

I tried Squid Fish Sauce which I did not like and then tried Three Crabs Fish Sauce and it was made in Hong Kong and had added fructose. The Vietnamese store I shop at had Red Boat which is made in Phu Quoc Vietnam where the best fish sauce is made, which is now my go to fish sauce.

Squid used to be my regular go to fish sauce, as I had tried some really bad ones before. I use Megachef now, I like it. Can't find Red Boat over here, unfortunately. Have you tried Red Boat Phamily Reserve?

Awesome review! I was hoping to see where Thai Kitchen brand fell in your rankings too, as most of the selection you have I can't access without paying astronomical shipping fees. I forgot to say, it was hilarious how Squid brand had to print the disclaimer that it doesn't contain squid on the front!

As someone that's been eating Thai food for over 50 years and who grew up in Bangkok I can tell you here that Thai Kitchen is an excellent brand. I don't buy it because the bottles are too small and I go through a LOT of fish sauce in a year. But for my friends that only use fish sauce when some recipe calls for it I highly recommend Thai Kitchen. It can definitely stand up to the brands Joshua reviewed above. I visited my son out of state a couple years ago and we decided we were going to have Thai food one night and I picked up some Thai Kitchen fish sauce in a grocery store in the 7 oz bottle to have with it. It was great. After I left (I gave him the bottle to keep) he never used it again. My kids don't understand fish sauce and see it as something you only add when you're cooking. I guess I'm a bad dad, LOL.

I need to try the Aroi D but I conducted a little blind taste test with 9 people, subjects being Healthy Boy Brand’s Gold Label vs Red Boat. Everyone preferred HBB straight up. However, now there’s a new Fish sauce on the market that has taken Thailand by storm and that’s the Abalone brand. Hopefully, you can get your hands on these

Megachef oyster sauce is the highest quality oyster sauce I've found. It's 45% oysters, first of all that's a lot and second it's not just oyster exctract. I'm not surprised their fish sauce is also good.

Any of the fish sauces with 40N will be your best bet than. Those are the most concentrated fish sauces with the highest amount or protein per serving.

Question...what about fermented fish sauce. Everytime I buy in a different store I usually get wrong crap. Last time I had a special, totally different tasting vietnamese one I think and just this friday, my store ran out of the normal brand ...he pointed me to a fermented fsihsauce and I didnt know that it is a difference. It is not clear and tastes funny (which fishsauce doesnt smalle funny tbh). I just wonder what the fermented one is used for?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but it was grey and thick? All fish sauce is fermented. Difference is the type of fish and the thick one has the whole fish ground up Into it. Similar applications, very different flavor. Used in dips, soups. Ect..

Thank you for reviewing these. I will say I didn't like Megachef because it had so much sugar in it that it tasted like pancake syrup mixed with fish sauce. If there's going to be sugar in my fish sauce in that great of an amount, I will put it in there. Sadly with Megachef, you can't take it out. My favorite fish sauce is Flying Lion which is made by the same company as 3 crabs. It would have been called 4 crabs but that's an unlucky number in China so they called it something else.

Yes the added vegetable protein brings a more complex flavor profile but the fish sauce with 40n has more Umami. I recommend you give these a taste for yourself with an open mind.
