July 4 isn't the only Independence Day worth celebrating in America. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, is celebrated all over America for the emancipation from slavery in the United States that occurred on June 19, 1865. Families across the country celebrate by breaking out their barbecues and cooking up some of their favorite bites. Here at Thrillist, we take a look at all the foods that are dished out and how you can celebrate as well.

I’m sorry but these ARE NOT Black people’s Juneteenth celebration foods! They are foods liked by all races and dubbed Black favorites by racists. Thrillist should change the name of this clip to “What’s your favorite foods to eat for Juneteenth” and note that these people are speaking for themselves;not the entire race. Watermelons and Fried Chicken are RACIST depictions of what we as a people eat all day everyday. You need other options by other other Black people to make this an accurate account of favorite foods for Juneteenth. Change this title

Black people do eat fried chicken and watermelon though. Chicken was easier to access and black people ate red foods and make drinks with cherry juice and lemonade or Red Soda.

Juneteenth was centered around red foods so watermelon was actually eaten and we do eat fried chicken in the south and okra came from Africa. white people tried to make us feel bad for eating these foods but black Americans come from the south so we did eat those foods and selling watermelon was a way to make money.

I personally don't want everyone to celebrate Juneteenth. Other groups will take it and dilute it, pollute it, make about something it's not. It's a black American celebration. I'd prefer it stay that way. Or is that just me?

It's just you. Widen you mind and look at what it all means...it's awsome! It's actually leadership. It's a statement. Slavery exists to this day. Together the human family must vanquish this nonsense. Many died for this to happen of all races and persuasions. Many fought for it to stop and share credit for freeing African Americans from it. There was a world struggle, which most people know little of and many of the soldiers, instigators and agents were of multiple ethnicities and nationalities. John Brown was white, for crying out loud, and William Wilberforce (Google him , if you don't know) and many others. This is not a thing to treat selfishly. If done so, one missed the entire point of freedom. The human family must help each other become free...and stay free!

@@dangerusscurvs4709 No, its not a lot of abolitionist were racist and had different motives. A lot of them planned to send us back to Africa or never planned for us to be equal. Abraham Lincoln hated that the south was getting rich off free labor while the norh paid their workers. Lincoln said he never wanted blacks living as equals and planned to ship us back to Africa like they did in Liberia and Sierra Leon.

Saying the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect in 1863 but not all states got the memo in time delaying Texas until June 19, 1865 is misleading. During those 2+ years there was that little Civil War thing happening 😂 which didn't end until April 1865. Troops were then sent to clean up a few skirmishes along the way. That's pretty quick. But, yes, Juneteenth is a huge deal and should be widely celebrated. 👍
