Apologies for stating at the start it was a 79, it was in fact a 1978 F350. Ford did not offer a 4x4 F350 in 78, so John Wayne did in fact order the top dog for 1978. Love them colors!

Very cool. My Dad had a 78 F250 4x4 with the same color scheme, also a super cab. It had the full chrome grill and from what I can tell now was pretty much fully loaded. It had a 400 with a one ton front axle. I learned to drive in it and took my driver's license test in it. It was a great truck. I wish I had it now....

In 1978 the Headlights were changed from round to square mid model year by Ford. So, early 1978’s had round headlights, late 1978’s had square headlights, which continued for the 1979 model!

The 78 Custom was the only truck that has the round headlights. In 78 the Ranger Trio , which encompasses Ranger, , Ranger XLT, and Ranger Lariat all had the rectangular headlights in 78 , so it wasn’t a mid year change, it was based on the trim package that you chose for your truck. 79 was the year that EVERYTHING has the rectangular headlights.

I’ve had a few of the 78 & 79 Ford trucks beginning with my first vehicle, a 78 Bronco, since 1984. One was a 78 Lariat F-150 4x4 I bought in 1985 with 49,000 miles. Black with red/white Lariat interior. A couple of things you left out regarding the Lariat package; They also had courtesy lights under the dash at the kick panel that illuminated the floor when you open the door. There was indeed one level of trim higher than this example, which was the bright aluminum rocker panel trim with black accent. My Lariat had that option. Only the Lariat offered both this and the narrow body contour side trim that outlined the two-tone paint. Regarding the comment about power windows - they were not an option on Ford trucks in 78. However, Bronco with XLT package offered the rear power window option. Duke was a great American who knew great American trucks!

Gee, John didn't want power windows,,,, I would think that would be standard on a Lariat, I bet he didn't put many miles on it.......... Something thats interesting to me is, about 20 + years ago on old trucks, 16" wheels was the norm, now they all have the lot more $$$$ 20" + wheels /tires on pickups. I dont see the need for 20" tires, it's probably a tire conspiracy for people to spend more $$$$$$$$ on big tires.........
