Those bars were an option to strengthen the fenders for situations where something, like a deer carcass could be strapped to the hood without warping the thin skinned fenders. 400s are a smog 460 with less bore and stroke. And we all love the 460 in three-quarter and one ton trucks and broncos for years , 460s can pull mountains but never were known for fuel efficiency about the same fule mpg unloaded or pulling a loaded gooseneck trailer.😂😂😂

Without the smog requirements, they are good engines, even a powerhouse with a 4 barrel and a set of heads and a cam.
