Two of the more common Foxbody Mustang 8.8 gear ratios that fox body fans consider installing in their cars are 3.55:1 and 3.73:1. I happen to have two foxbody mustangs that are set up very similarly in that the rear tire heights are almost exactly the same, and they both have T-5 transmissions. Back in 1998 when I went to swap the gears in my 1992 Notchback Foxbody 5.0, I wanted to instal 3.73:1 gears, however my friends told me that 3.73's were WAY too steep for a daily driver street car. The worst part was I didn't have any real world experience where I could understand the difference between the 3.08:1 gear ratio I was starting with, and the 3.73:1 I was wanting to instal. At the same time, I have recently installed a set of 3.55:1 gears in my 1991 Foxbody GT Convertible. This was a change from the 2.73:1 gears that the car came with from the factory.
All that said, I wanted to put this video together for any and all people out there that are currently in the position that I was back in 1998. I wanted to try and help the community by showing how both a set of 3.55:1 & 3.73:1 gear sets drive both on the street, and how they also perform on the highway - at higher speeds.

Back about 25 years ago, before KZbin, the various magazines said, basically, 3.55's for steel roof cars and 3.73's for ragtops because of the weight difference. So, not knowing any better, I put 3.73's in my '91 convertible and could not be happier with them. From 2.73 stock gears to 3.73's my highway rpm at 60 indicated only went up about 450 rpm or so. And, when you really put the spurs to it, (the proper term for getting after a pony), my head gets snapped back so hard my neck is sore for a week. Yeah, that's the stuff.

Great video Gary, I appreciate the work that goes into these videos. I think a few factors that matter: 1. Power level (or planned power level) of the car. 2. What transmission is in the car (if you have a manual with a 2.95 first instead of the stock 3.35 1st, you will need to account for that). 3. What is your tolerance for freeway (cruising) RPM. 4. Weight of the car (heavier cars need more gear) 5. Do you have racing goals? My 3.73s felt doggy on the low end with my HCI '89 vert. I have a T5Z with the 2.95 first gear and the .63 overdrive. I did my first gear change on my own over this past winter. After playing with the Tremec online calculators, I decided on 4.30s. Couldn't be happier. Feels 100 times faster and I can still cruise at 74 mph at 2600 RPM. BTW, please keep doing the podcast with Chris. It's awesome!

Great video👍 Concerning jumpy speedometers, I’ve actually heard that the reason sometimes is the magnets in the mechanism has lost their power/degaussed over time..hence an even smooth pull to the “hand”/ meter is no longer there..making it jump. Especially at lower speeds..I’ve tried it myself, using magnets from a spare meter , and it got better… for awhile. Something worth trying if you a chance maybe? Best bet I guess would be if someone could recharge those magnets properly..

@NGG1983

You can"t talk about rear-end gearing without factoring in transmission gear ratios. The stock world class T5 has a 3.35 first gear ratio, this allows it to get out of the hole with the low(numerically) rear ratios that come stock such as 2.73, 3.08, or 3.27. Most aftermarket performance transmissions such as the T5Z or TKO600/TKX will have a 2.95 or thereabouts first gear ratio. They do this knowing that most enthusiast guys have gone up in rear gear(numerically) to 3.55, 3.73, 4.10. That 2.95 or so first gear ratio combined with say a 3.73 rear gear is really a sweet spot for gearing in these cars. It brings back a usable first gear and when you hit 2nd it's at the proper RPM range. When you have the stock 3.35 first gear combined with 3.73 rear gear you're out of first gear sooo fast. My personal recommendation for a street car would be as follows -With a stock T5 with 3.35 first gear, I'd go with a used set of 3.27's. you can find these cheap on craigslist or marketplace because they came stock on a bunch of models. this is my mind is the most rear gear i'd want with the stock t5 (overall first gear ratio 10.95) -With an aftermarket Trans with a 2.95 first I'd go with 3.73 rear(11.00 overall first gear ratio) or 4.10 rear (12.09 overall first gear ratio) Also worth noting is the aftermarket transmissions usually have a lower(numerically) final drive ratio to bring highway cruising RPM back down

A few months later I had a 3.73 installed when I decided that the 3.08 was not low enough. Ideally, if you race, you want to choose the gear that gets you through the trap at redline. Generally 3.73 for 5 speed and 4.10 for AOD if NA or 3.55 for 5 speed and 3.73 for AOD with a power adder.

My ASC/McLaren Coupe has 3.08s but with the stock 225/50/15s, comes out to about 3.31. That's nice for a factory motor that drops off at 4400. Now that I have heads that breath to 6000, maybe I'll go stiffer. In 1987, I put 3.73s in my stock '86 ASC with the same tires and I was shifting in the intersection. Hated it. 3.73:1 make first gear almost unusable without slicks. I have 2 foxes. One with 3.73s and one with 3.27's. The 3.27 car is faster with less mods. You get more out of 1st gear and when you shift to 2nd it doesn't feel like you're hitting a wall with 3.27's like you do with 3.73's for some reason. My 95 gt daily has the anticlimactic 2:73s and yes it's sweet to pop it in 5th and cruise at 1300/1400rpm in traffic but I don't mind driving in 4th where it's closer to 2k. But as everybody knows they hurt acceleration big time even tho the HO has impressive Tq for a small short stroke engine so it's not as bad as most would assume but deff no neck snapping acceleration. I'm going to do a gear swap but I don't wanna feel like I'm cruising at 55mph in 3rd. I'm thinking 3.55 is the best compromise... Also I'm thinking is where at the moment having a bone stock 5.0 and there pretty underwhelming in higher RPMs really low gears may not feel as impressive as a slightly higher gear that can use some of that TQ they have. Mine seems to pull best around 3500ish you can really feel the TQ pulling good and wringing it out to 5500+ is kinda pointless where you can feel the power dropping off and it's just not doing a whole lot except gaining rpm. That small long runner HO intake just won't breathe in upper rpm but does make TQ. I do plan on doing some upgrades at some point what depends on when or what reason it needs a rebuild. But at least intake, cam and long tubes. I'd love to grab a pair of enforcers, I may be able to swing it at moment maybe but if money's super tight may end up doing some mild porting to the E7s if there in good shape that is but if they need overhauling I'm deff going aftermarket heads preferably enforcers but there's some decent even more budget ones out there now and anything is better than E7s and I'm definitely not dumping money into those turds. Problem I have is I have a hotrod truck that needs engine n trans, the 355 just needs a short block I can swap heads cam n intake worst case, trans I'm not sure needs to be decent but not super expensive, all comes down to vehical Prioritys, my gt is basically my daily but have a caravan also that has my big sound system (big subs, big amp and lithium) truck is a toy that drive to work here n there when it's all good which isn't at moment. Well that was a semi off topic ramble! Lol

@KASLCustoms 2 жыл бұрын
Thx for the kind words! In all honesty there is not a massive difference between the two gear ratios - maybe 150-200 RPM at most with the stock T-5 etc. All that said, the biggest place you’re probably going to notice the higher RPM of the 3.73’s is on highway/freeway cruises. If you do a lot of “Higher speed” driving, I’d go with the 3.55’s. They are a great and very noticeable difference. Otherwise, I’d go 3.73’s if you mainly do short in town cruises. Not to say you can’t do longer highway cruises with 3.73’s, you’ll just notice that your car is reving fairly high if you’re up around the 75+mph mark for extended periods of time

Yeah, tall gears only benefit you if you don't have to have your foot "in it" while it's at lower RPM i.e. slight downhill grade. My Notch with 3.73's can get as high as 30ish mpg on the highway with slight variations of grade. Moral of the story: The less throttle you have to give it - regardless of engine RPM - the better the fuel milage 👍

I have a stock '92 with a World Class T5 and 2.73 gears. When I bought the car it came with a 3.73 gearset in the box. In readihg the comments below, I think that 3.73 is not going to be satisfactory for me because I don't want first gear to be too short. I suspect that 3.27s would be a lot better for me. The 2.73 is a bit too low, and I think makes it more prone to bucking when cruising slow (5-10 mph). I am looking for a higher ratio to cure that and get a little more acceleration without smoking tires all the time.

@@neilbrown82 I decided to go with a 3.73 and it is totally awesome. It is the perfect street ratio for these cars. Its like I now have a 4 speed with 5th as overdrive. Here's What I Learned about Gears in Mustangs. Number 1 : If You DONT Live in Germany and Drive Your Mustang On The Speed UNLIMITED AUTOBAHN HIGHWAY ... And None of Us DO .. Then ... DON'T BE AFRAID TO SWAP in MUCH LOWER GEARS ... ! It Comes Down to These TWO Things ... If You DONT Drive Much On Long Straight Roads / Street s / Highways ... Then , The Best Gears Are ANY From 3 : 45 MINIMUM AND On Up to 5 : 14 With Both Auto and Stick Overdriive Trannies. And Stock to Mildly Modified Engines. And The Second Thing Is : If You REALLY DO ALOT Of LONG DISTANCE STRAIGHT ROADS / HIGHWAY DRIVING ... THEN OBVIOUSLY The BETTER Gears ARE ANY From 2 : 73 on Up to about 3 : 55 / 3 : 73 MAXIMUM. For Both Auto and Stick Overdriive Trannies. For NON - Overdriive Auto and Stick Transmissions ... A Little Less Gearing is More DESIRABLE. SO ... For Long HIGHWAYS Driving ... It Better To Use Gears From 2 : 73 to 3 : 55 MAXIMUM. And For ALL Close / " AROUND The Area " Shorter And Hills And Twisting Roads DRIVING ... Then ... BEST Gears to Use Are MINIMUM 3 : 45 On Up To About 4 : 88 MAXIMUM . AGAIN ... DONT BE AFRAID TO GEAR IT FOR BETTER AND WAY MORE FUN AND SATISFYING " THROUGH THE GEARS " " SEAT OF THE PANTS " PUNCH ... ! And DONT WORRY ABOUT HIGH TOP END SPEEDS AND GAS MILEAGE ... ! THINK ABOUT IT ... ! WHERE ARE YOU EVER EVEN GONNA BE ABLE TO SAFELY HIT ANYTHING OVER 110 MILES AN HOUR ON ANY ROADS OF THE UNITED STATES ANYWAYS ... ? ? POLICE WILL NOT ALLOW SUCH RIDICULOUS HIGH TOP END SPEEDS AND OVER 90 MPH SPEEDING ANYWAYS ... ! SO ... GEAR YOUR CAR FOR WAY MORE " ALL AROUND " STREET RIPPIN FUN AND SATISFACTION ACCELERATION ... ! USE 3 : 45 MINIMUM AND EXPERIMENT WITH EVEN LOWER GEARS From 3 : 55 ON UP TO EVEN 5 : 14 . LEAVE THE HIGHER GEARS OF 2 : 73 TO 3 : 08 AND 3 : 27 FOR ONLY LONGER STRAIGHT STREET / HIGHWAYS DRIVING CARS . SIMPLE AS THAT.
