Interesting bit of trivia here.......I bought a Brand New 91 GT upon my return to Germany from Desert Storm through the AAFES New Car Sales program. It was built and shipped in to Rotterdam in the Netherlands and I picked it up from the port about 2 months after ordering it. That car came with the upgraded hoses (blue) and an engine oil cooler on it as well. No idea if it was a full SSP package car or not, but it did have those features. Would love to get it back if I could find it. VIN 1FACP42E7MF160944 (had to print it on so many shipping documents when I PCS'd back to CONUS that it stuck in my head). Last reported in VA in 2016.

They also had beefed up rear control arms, a coolant restrictor in place of a thermostat, a different dome light, 2 piece speedo cable, trunk release button relocated from the glovebox to the knee panel on the driver’s side, and a single key system (same key for ignition, doors, and trunk) aside from the aforementioned options. I also believe that they came with a heavy duty fan clutch and a high flow water pump. As for the speedo, I have seen “certified calibration” speedos in both 140 and 160 variants on all years between ‘87 and ‘93. If any of you ever come by Talladega Super Speedway here in Alabama, they have the Motorsports Hall Of Fame Museum there by the track that has an awesome collection of cars, trucks and motorcycles. I say this because they have on display one of the TWO surviving (in original livery that is) Alabama State Trooper Mustangs there along with one of two surviving ‘71 Javelin State Trooper cars. The other two are at the DPS HQ in Montgomery Alabama.

CamSayCam you’re a weak minded, uptight person lacking a sense of humor casting stones from your glass house, and a pathetic example of a Christian at that. I think you should read your good book and figure out what else you missed aside from the part about not passing judgment and attacking your brothers and sisters in the name of your God taking his name in vain to glorify yourself. I honestly don’t think a God that created the entire universe in days and is all powerful and all knowing really needs you to do his bidding anymore so than you being his KZbin comment section protector and mouthpiece. People like you give Christians a bad name and don’t even live in accordance to the scriptures that you defend. The fact that you are playing Apostle is the biggest sin of them all in the Bible you’re thumping. Jesus laid with leper’s and thieves and cast judgement on no one as his own life was to spread the word of salvation through love, kindness, forgiveness and sacrifice. Not hate, fear and damnation. Abraham was the father of the three biggest religions and I bet you hate two of them by your comment of damnation and judgement and don’t understand the one you claim as your own. If hell is real you’re destined to be shoveling coal and stoking the fire. I guess you don’t remember that you are told to turn the other cheek and judge not your fellow man as a true Christian.

@thomascullenjr5445 жыл бұрын
No ground effects and the notchback has no spoiler so they are definitely lighter if you have one without a lot of power accessories.
@mihaeltomasovic5 жыл бұрын
It was allegedly a lighter car and the Notchback, as mentioned by @Thomas Cullen Jr., was the lightest of the LX's. With that being said, if you had a convertible LX it would be heavier than the GT even with power options. The convertible GTs were obviously heavier but the ground effects and some of the power options are very nice on the GTs and some folks love them... I am a freaky big fan of the early 80s and particularly '84 and '85 Mustangs just because I adore the four eyed look... Anyhow... If I were to go later I love certain things that others hate - like the "cheese grater" tail lights.
@ChipsMcC4 жыл бұрын
The notchbacks are much lighter. Have an 88 and with a minimal weight drop (sound deadening out, spare out, stuff like that) it weighs in on the local scales at 2750 without me in it. It is a no option car though.

The 87-88 motors were no more stout than the 89-92, however the hotter cam and speed density fueling made them the only true factory 225hp cars. 2-3hp was lost going to the milder cam and mass-air. All 5.0 Mustangs used forged pistons from 85-92 and were replaced by sintered.powdered metal hyper-eutectic types in 93. Forged pistons are marked trw on the underside. I had an 88 lx 5.0. A friend had an 87 gt. The ground effects added enough weight that the lx was responded to throttle better and the suspension was effectivly stiffer because of lower weight. My 88 had an overbored cylinder. I had a couple of Lincoln Mercury mechanics who were members of the mustang club replace the short block under warranty. When I got it back, it had huge power compared to stock ( felt faster than a 4.6, 3 valve 2005) and got 30 mpg on the highway. In my mind last of the "pony cars" due to compact size and lower weight.

I worked at a large ford dealer in Orlando that sold these SSPs to the FHP. Every one I saw had the silicone hoses. I think it was in 93 when Ford screwed up and assembled many of the cars with standard hose clamps. The silicone hoses need a special clamp that won't cut the softer hose when you tighten it down. We had to replace the clamps on all the cars before they could be delivered. All FHP cars were 5 spd and came from Ford already painted black and yellow. There were also some that were unmarked in dark gray paint and a maybe few other colors? Some local departments had autos. The Mustang was the primary patrol car at the time. Almost every trooper drove one, but they also had to have some Crown Vics for transporting anyone they arrested. The back seat of the Mustang had little room to start with and had a rack in it to hold paper file folders and their smokey the bear hat. The Volusia County FHP troop still may have a mint 93 Mustang they use for parades and events along with a 350 Camaro. They also had some 5.0 Fox LTDs in the '80's. In later years they had a few Mercury Marauders that were slightly modified. A local dept. had a 95 Mustang GTS 5.0 in black as an unmarked car, though there was no longer a police package then.

That was the name of the cheaper goodyear EPDM rubber blue one's now sold by Continental . Fords where a silicone blend. Nothing "miller" about them just silicone/ polyester . you can't find them any more because china flooded the market with cheap and poorly made silicone kits that won't last anywhere near as long as the motorcrafts did. I used to hit terminal velocity on I95 going home late at night and it would shake itself apart and then boil the brake fluid and warp the rotors when I had to stop in a hurry. ffhgu 07 can you explain these mechanical differences? And a quick factoid for the "it has an interceptor motor in it" guys, police cars are built to the same specs as taxi cabs. They are "fleet" vehicles, one thing in the police/taxi cars that was different than non fleet cars was the number of welds per inch on all body/frame mating points, fleet cars had more spot welds closer together to add strength and reduce flex. Other than that and the hd cooling systems the fleet cars are no better than normal production cars.

Ok. Let's get the bad out of the way first. When it comes to an 88 speed density car vs an 89 mass air, I will choose the mass air every time. Why? Because although people say the 88 was the fastest, EVERY freak car that I came across was an 89 and the 89 had the best cam as well. Every 88 that I worked on was lacking a bit in the torque department compared to an 89. Now, a big thanks for being the other person that seems to knw why Ford put the name Cobra on the cars. I was getting sick and tired of dumbasses telling me they had a special edition. Same with the Anniversary plaque on the dash. YOUR CAR IS NOT SPECIAL BECAUSE OF THE PLAQUE. Blue hoses are silicone. Called the rims 10 holes. 1987 GT had "cheesegrater tailights" and "food processor" rims.A fully loaded LX hatch would weigh the same as a GT. Hatch weighs 50 lbs more than trunk, but some people believe that the weight is in the right spot, over the rear wheels to give more traction. Chidrole and Jay Why. J&P used to race turbo Dodges and went Ford hard core when Joe got the red notchback. Last name is Da Silva. Paul had the black Mercury Cougar XR7. Paul did the engine work. They started off in Scarborough. Barbados Ct. Joe and Paul went separate ways Da Silva racing with Joe selling a lot of bolt ons and body kits. Paul is PSP (Paul Silva Performance). Joe's shop is 1km from my house and the last time I saw Paul was.....yesterday at Cayuga. Back in the day, I bought some parts from J&P and engine parts from Tommy Morana at AfFORDable performance and Wade from RCHS. Chassis parts from Lucky Marcos at Lucky's performance where we used to buy our VP fuels on the way to Cayuga. I met Joe and Paul at Finch and Weston in 1988. Tommy Morana at Vic Park and Gordon Baker in 1987. Also we went to Warden and Sheppard, Dundas and Confederation, Pine Valley and HWY7. All after midnight, if you know what I mean... Go back to the track, you won't regret it. What smells better than burnt VP fuel and tire smoke? Have an unhealthy burger and fries and sit on the same bleachers from back in the day. Saw a bunch of 1980-1990 Mustangs yesterday. Nothing newer. Some of them still powershifting a 5 speed running insane times.

Holy cow that was the most information I've ever gotten for my fox body I have a four-eyed Fox body, I was corrected a couple months ago with the Canadian Cobra aspect of it, I did buy my in Canada I've had it since 1989 it's an 85, it's black with the gray interior I don't think they made a lot of them the kilometer aspect on the speedometer is kind of funny, but I can't tell you how much I appreciate all the information you have given me, if I'm not mistaken the GT of that 85s were actually somewhere between 3 to 500 lb heavier because of the hatchback style trunk, but I could be wrong I'm not sure again thank you for all your information it is extremely useful, so I don't make an ass out of myself again. On the upside I do love that 85 it is brutally quick it is completely original, and it's kind of like driving a cat with its tail on fire it just wants to come around on you.lol

The LXs were actually faster than the GT because the GT was heavier. Plus the power rating was 5 hp different between the 5spd and AOD cars. I think car and driver listed them at like 210 auto 215 5spd.

The 2 most fun fox bodies I owned. A 1987 lx with the 2.3, a friend raced midgets at the time the 2.3 was the hot engine to run. We dropped one of midget engines in it offy intake and all.....If any of you have driven a fox woth a 4 banger the steering is so light (less weight).It felt like a go cart very easy to toss the car around. I picked up a 1983 coupe from a boneyard one of my friends worked at with a 351w shoehorned into it. Total sleeper, still had hubcaps. Had another 87 gt .030. 0 deckheight twisted wedge heads E303 cam crane roller rockers, lifters & a 150 shot 70mm throttle body mathing maf and 24lb injectors. Also had a1969 coupe with a #'s matching 302. A 1980 200 straight 6 fox . Also, that direct drive fan adapter and flex fan didn't come on the car from the factory. Not even in hot weather conditions. I've seen California Highway Patrol cars that patroled Death Valley that had the same fan and radiator as all other SSP cars. I have bought and seen multiple SSP cars while still in service and they have a specific fan clutch that is a heavy duty one. It is actually a truck part like most heavy duty factory Ford engine parts are.

I agree for the most part,but there is a Ford dealership in Nashville Tn. that sells pretty much all the Ford Police units in Tn. and they modify them all before they get sold and the Mustang SSPs that they send out are closer to 400 hp after they get through with them. Even the Explorers are hopped up from factory specs before they hit the street. My law enforcement friends tell me that the Police Explorers will top 160 mph. I saw a local Sherriff's Explorer the other day with a Coyote 5.0 and a turbocharger,the deputy says he has had it beyond the 160 on the speedo and ran down a new model Hellcat Charger.

I believe they had the crappier seats in the Lx 5 liter. Whereas the Gt had the better looking bucket type. I wasn’t overly thrilled with the 1987 when it came out. You could get that bright orange stripe down the side and all the ground effects was a little much. The 5.0 still reminded me of the fox body I loved with 85/86 gt wheels. As time went I didn’t mind the Gt.

This may only apply to Canada and the1983 model year but when I bought a brand new 83 GT it came in two version: The Cobra with the 302 and the turbo with the 2.3 turbo 4 banger. So there is a huge difference between a GT Cobra and the other GT.

This is some good stuff! The SN95 Mustang chassis is derived from the Fox chassis, but the lower subframes up front are a bit different, the rear are also altered, and the trans tunnel and floor pans were revised as well, which is why it is also known as the "Fox-4" platform. I noticed that you didn't address the other big myth about the old 5.0 Mustang. It's not really a 5.0! It's 4948cc, or 4.9L. Ford called it 5.0 because 1. It sounds better, 2. With a version of that engine available in the truck line alongside the 300 cid I6, they rounded up to avoid confusion at the parts counter.

Love the notchback. My 89 LX 5.0 coupe I bought new in 89 (not a police package) with power windows, locks and air conditioning weighs in at 2961 stock so the ssp is more likely less than that. GTs with all the fancy bits were as much as 400 lbs heavier actually making them slower than an LX. Especially a notchback. By the way I still have the 89 after almost 30 years.
@shawne72286 жыл бұрын
Shorty headers off-road exhaust, underdrive pulleys, timing, cold air intake. K&N Filter. These mods made my 89 5.0 make 225 at the wheels and 276 torque. My 93 cobra with the same mods made 260 horsepower, and 313 torque at the wheels.
