Haven't played the game (yet), but from the clip alone, I must say I'm already impressed by your commitment to the theme - that makes it feel like a full-fledged, standalone game and not some one-off game-jam... gimmick. Dice aren't exactly the first thing one'd associate with Japanese folklore, but they definitely have a supernatural... side to them, so hey, it actually makes perfectly good sense. And even the title is pretty smart (and easy to remember), too :P

I was really excited to participate this year, and then I spent Friday in a 8 hour session of basically writers block, Saturday morning I had to step away for a bit, and then I just ended up doing other things and never did anything for the jam. I had an idea I liked for a bit where it’s D&D but you play as the dice, controlling the outcomes to keep the players engaged. It fell apart as I tried to figure out specifics though, and even if I could get it to work, I think it would have been too ambitious for a game jam in order to be fun.

I will admit that as soon as I came up with something I just went with it. It’s not unique at all IMO (I personally played 5 other games with a very similar concept). And it’s honestly not that good of an idea, it’s super unintuitive and hard to grasp which doesn’t work well for a puzzle game.

The aesthetic of dice gets a little exhausting after a while; maybe themes which reference physical objects aren't the best? It feels like most of the games felt they needed to use a literal die to justify the theme, when it can be interpreted metaphorically as just the concept of randomness

@@djroscurro9859 well the thing is that since the theme was “ roll of the dice “ most of the developers were just thinking in games with dice’s so i feel like the reason of the amount of the authentic is a bit more on the theme than the developers .

@@razorback8300 Maybe it was just me projecting, but rather than thinking of a physical dice, I just thought of the concept of randomness. So… yeah it’s probably just me. Also, I suppose it’s a theme for a reason so a specific aesthetic makes sense I would think.

Mark, thank you very much for giving us this occasion to have fun, practice and share ideas. (I'm the maker of "the quest of the dice", the first clip that appears in the video). This jam, combined with the other ones I've joined recently, teached me a lot about time management and game making in general: this time I tried to apply everything I learned in the past months and got an enormous ammount of positive feedback. I want to thank everyone that played my game and took time to share their opinion on it, this kind of interaction is extremely precious, especially the reviews that point out the negative aspects of the game. Making a game for this year’s game jam was the first time I’ve worked on a game-it was a chill and small team of me and three roommates. My main contributions were making visual assets as well as reminding the programmers on my team to keep it small, haha. The only experience I had working on games before was making a Ren’py adaptation of a fanfic, and closely following a guide to make a visual mod for Stardew Valley. So yeah, it was a very cool and invigorating experience, to make a working game with other people in such a short time. It’s not very user-friendly, but I look forward to working on more small games in the future. (The game is called Thunder Bolt if anyone is curious. It’s a sokoban-like game with four-sided die where you try to line up working arithmetic problems. My visuals clash a bit with how intensely difficult the puzzles are, haha.)

Ngl, i submitted to this game. Damn the theme was hard, being more free with the idea of the die is a sure winner in my book.

Well thank you GMTK and the people who entered for putting this on. It was Interesting to see all the different Ideas people came up with. I didn't join, but I did think of game concept pretty similar to the game quickly shown at 1:24, however I've never made an turn based RPG before, so I didn't even try since I knew I lacked the skills to make it 48hrs.

What amazes me, is that every single GMTK Game Jam produces games (in 48 hours) that are better than most triple A games these days. Most of which take years to make, have massive teams behind them, and a huge budget. It's incredible what a few passionate devs with a dream can create in such a short time. Thank you GMTK for another great game jam, these always inspire me immensely.

I was watching the stream where some games were featured. All I gotta say is. CONGRATS TO EVERYONE!! Seriously this series never disappoints. I love people thinking new games to present ideas! Really shines geniuses that exist in contrast with the corporate triple A games that suck each year. Well done!

Thanks Mark for hosting this jam! Super stoked to be in the top 20, but I also learnt a lot through this jam as well. Tbh I didn't expect to make it into the top 20, while I managed to get most of what I wanted into the game there was still stuff I didn't manage to add due to the time constraint (e.g. music, fix pixelated graphics, names on levels, more polish etc.). Add to that the fact that there were so many similar games this jam, and some of them were so much more polished than mine (and some added a mechanic or two), I thought that I would probably rank well but not make it into the top 100, let alone the top 20. I was glad to see that my level design and simplicity eventually won out, and was frankly surprised to see that so many people like my graphics, given that in past jams this was usually a weakness for me. Thanks again to you Mark for picking my game, I couldn't have been happier. And for putting in so much work to host this jam for us, I'm sure many of us, myself included, enjoyed the experience.

Wow! Thanks for hosting this amazing game jam! We had a lot of fun working on our game Randomancer, and we are extremely happy to see it featured in the video. Our design philosophy is all about game feel and fun, and we always refer to GMTK when working on our game projects. Thank you for creating all these super helpful and well thought out videos for us game developers! Now after getting such incredible feedback and recognition from this jam, I feel confident that we are on the right track and we'll be able to create something truly amazing in the future! Maybe we'll even continue working on Randomancer after finishing our current project, Ants Took My Eyeball, which also happens to be based on our previous jam games!
