Congratulations! The game looks awesome! As someone who's just making his first game since high school (a 13 year gap), seeing the quality of your entry (and all the others!) is both amazing and daunting. It seems I've spent about 2 months doing less than what yourselves and others are able to do in 2 days! May I ask a few questions about the game development? how many people did you have develop Restless Wing Syndrome in the jam? What sort of prep do you do pre-jam? Do you have any assets ready beforehand that you take from other games? or do you truly come up with the idea, visuals, audio, code etc. all in 48 hours? Thanks in advance if you answer any of those! Congratulations again on your great work!
@leko88734 жыл бұрын
@@moocowp4970 Thank you so much! So I worked alone for this jam, and created pretty much all assets during the 48 hours. I've made a lot of platformers in the last 6 years (started with scratch, moved to game maker in 2016). Therefore, being able to pull little pieces of code from my other small projects, along with just overall experience in the genre, made the design and coding process of the game go very smoothly. This gave me more time to work on the art, music, and polish. In terms of pre-jam prep I just made sure that my schedule was completely free for the duration, and planned out how I would structure my time on certain tasks. Hope this helps, and thanks again!

Well done, i'm on the third re-play and i can't help playing it The controls are spot on and the level design perfectly highlights and serves the gameplay. Also, i've found myself spending more time that i expected in the credit screen, when you are free to jump. I think this is indicative of how smooth the controls are, and also it made me think about the theme "Out of Control" When, in these games, you gain the "control" back, either one of the two following things is going to happen (maybe more than 2, but i'm going full Mark Brown so...) : 1) The game suddendly becomes empty, as you take out of the equation the mechanic which you used to build your game 2) You feel a sense of relief, of power, you feel "unchained" and you just want to play with that mechanic , until the game take it away from you again. Your game falls under the second scenario. And I think this can be a significant factor in a good "Out of Control" game. If you are going to implement it in the full game, i'm sure you will use it wisely. I will 100% play the full game. very well done

Many kudos to ALL participants, your creativity and thrive are truly an inspiration. I also want to emphazise this fact: There are now 5477 new pieces of interactive media that didn't exist last month. That is both a fascinating and heartbreaking prospect, since most of us will never get to play a fraction of these in our lifetime.

I thought there were not that many good game designers in the world. Now I know they are just not recognized. These are genius!
@cookiemonster592634 жыл бұрын
That's... Such a backhanded compliment. We're here. We just don't get recognised for our work and we often have to compromise our values and designs to satiate superiors :/ there are a lot of indie and AAA Devs that are doing great work out there. Just gotta know where to look
@El_Andru4 жыл бұрын
@@cookiemonster59263 Yes, thats what I'm saying, but I need to see devs like these create big budget titles since they have the design and principles down so good that experimentation often goes great. Most AAA titles are very uninspired in my opinion, its very rehashed and a chore to play. These devs show that great questions are still left behind and need exploration. That is what my comment was referring to, I hate that they have such a small light when they have the biggest creative power. Like the new Halo, "what if it was Halo 1... But with grappling hook?!?!". That is boring.
@cookiemonster592634 жыл бұрын
@@El_Andru You're putting that on developers and not publishers/publishing companies, though. AAA devs don't get that kind of input because we have to listen to what our bosses are saying we should do. The only exception are game directors who get to pitch the actual game ideas. Furthermore, most of the time, we're not really allowed to take too many risks because it's seen as financially risky / goes against previously established game design rules, like long grass is something you can always hide in, etc. The issue here isn't the devs :/ it's the fucking system. Trust me, we want to make AAA games that are more risky but it's borderline impossible to get the money. An AAA mobile game can cost about $1M to make with a full team of 20. Console games are closer to about 30-40M, and trust me, it fucking sucks to be told that your idea is good but that it's not something the studio is willing to risk the money on :(
@El_Andru4 жыл бұрын
@@cookiemonster59263 Yeah, chill out, I never mentioned publishers but that is what I was referring to. I told you I'm on the side of the devs, its the people that hide creative potential who I'm disappointed in. I of course know about financially risky things, but I believe that good game design can stretch the core of a franchise and make the next iteration of it. I think getting too stale will eventually hurt the franchise so experimentation needs to keep happening in order for the franchise to keep itself alive and strong. I don't know if you are getting heated over this which it's not my intention, because we are basically agreeing on everything.
@cookiemonster592634 жыл бұрын

I guess the biggest drawback of this jam is that in most cases, it's a popularity contest. Getting your game seen is the biggest challenge rather than actual game design. During the voting period I've found a lot of hidden gems that didn't get the highlight because they weren't made by famous game designers or someone who has a bigger audience, which is just a shame. EDIT: I'm definitely biased - I participated in both this and 2019 game jams. It was my second and my games never broke 20 ratings (my first entry was just 6 oof).
@thatgamingcouple25604 жыл бұрын
Maybe could be fixed by forcing people to review 2-3 random games before they are allowed to pick a specific game or something. Will still allow people to only rate a game low or quickly or something but then maybe add some weighted value to a person based on some statistic (number of reviews, time played, years active, etc.)
@fy87984 жыл бұрын
It's not about winning. Even people like me (first time jamming, hobbyist nobody knows me, only two friends of mine even played my thing) can get nice feedback and people rating pretty well. And that's already really great. people that are already good designers probably will do better games. But that's experience. And totally expected.
@aditya95sriram4 жыл бұрын
How about only allowing "registered" people to vote. That way you could send 5 random games to everyone who registered to vote in the preliminary phase and not allow public voting till later.
@TheMikirog4 жыл бұрын
@@fy8798 My point is, I get practically no feedback on what I did great or not and I've seen first time jammers on Discord getting tons of votes. Not getting high on the rankings, sure, it sucks, but if the second reason I enter a jam - to get feedback on my game making skills under pressure, well, it's no longer there.
@tymd89494 жыл бұрын
That Gaming Couple They actually put this into the jam. You had to fill a rating queue of about 20 games before you could rate anything specific. You could still play any game you want, just not rate it.

Suggestion: for couple of games you commented that they could just add few more levels and release it on steam right away. Did they release it? I dunno, I never heard of them again. Did any of those top 20 games from last year jam released? Never heard of them. But maybe they did, so how about actually highlighting that fact over your next videos, to inform us all and provide a lot of PR for said games, I'd say it's a win-win situation - we could play "full" versions and the creators will get more moneyz for their work :P Sure, the creators have to keep you informed if they released and if they changed the name.

@TheOobo4 жыл бұрын
The jam was only a couple weeks ago, despite the accelerated schedule of the jam itself I'd think most devs would want a bit more time to polish before releasing on steam. I know I would (although I wasn't in the top 20 for a reason)
@LeonserGT4 жыл бұрын
@@TheOobo I mainly meant previous jams, of course, but my point is some devs will polish their games and release it - most of us will probably never know
