I actually recieved mine a few weeks ago. I live in Ohio so my soil isn't as loose as yours but I will say. Its hands down the best weeding tool i have. It works so well. When you look at it you may not be impressed but I'm telling you it will change your life.

@@gardeningwithhoss the only thing is I wish it had a little thicker handle like my rogue hoe. I have busted through some tough stuff like the walkways of my garden and while doing that it has a little bit of flex on the handle. I really dont see this being a huge issue though.

Although a different brand, I have a similar hoe like this. I found that it works very well in regular tilled soil, but ran into a unique problem in my home flowerbeds, where it didn't work well at all. The previous owner of our home had not done any maintenance on the surrounding flowerbeds and had probably a hundred shrubs planted all around the beds surrounding the home. She had filled those flowerbeds with red lava rock probably 20 years back or so and the pig weed, nightshade and nut grass had taken over. I thought that my tool would work wonders and I had learned how to use it correctly, so I thought this would work out great for me. Unfortunately, this type of hoe does not work so great where there are a lot of lava rocks and stones in a flowerbed, as the blade just glances right over the stones instead of digging them and the weeds up. It is a great tool for the most part, but in our case, it simply was not the right one at all. I also found that it make sit all easier in weed or grass removal to wet the bed lightly before doing any weed removal. If you leave the old pulled weeds on the ground, they can root right back where you left them or even drop seed from them that will germinate later. Nice video on this tool, but just be aware that it does not resolve every issue in a garden.

My husband has a tool similar to that one that he LOVES..... the hoe does not have the sharp point. Instead it is like a stirrup on a horse's saddle. and it is 'loose' at the neck so it moves back and forth a bit at the neck. Same advantages with a slightly smaller footprint. Great for shallow weeding and can safely get in close to young / small plants.

Weeds are much easier to control when they are in the threadlike stage, usually not visible to the naked eye. That's why frequent, shallow cultivation is so important for weed control. I use a colinear hoe that we make ourselves that is very similar to this one in the way you use it. I think I might like the cutting end of yours better because of the v-shape, the serrations, and the turned up sides. BUT, one thing about this style of hoe, is that it should have a really long handle so you don't have to stoop over -- standing straight up give you less back pain. I think being able to stand straight up and not stoop over is one of the benefits to this kind of hoe, and you don't really need to bend over because you aren't putting a lot of force on it. Also, you don't really want this type of hoe to be razor sharp. Being a little dull allows it to pull up some of the smaller weeds by the roots. We use drip tape too and I find that if my hoe is really sharp, I do more damage to the tape if I do hit it. So, yeah. I think this is a VERY cool design. Just think about putting a longer handle on it. My favorite weeding tools are my Hoss double wheel hoe with 12" oscillating hoe, and a leaf rake. I cut down the plants with the wheel hoe and rake up the cuttings so they don't re-root themselves. The raking also disturbs the soil surface a little to get the seeds that you can't even see yet that are in the process of germinating. That gets 90% of my weeding in between the rows. I REALLY wish you would make an even wider oscillating hoe attachment -- like maybe 16" or so (18" may be too wide to be sturdy enough unless you made the blade thicker). But I do use my "push pull" style hoe a lot on smaller "weed patrols" and more detailed work. Your new push pull hoe, with the bent up sides might be just the ticket for my raised beds too.

If you need a wider weeding blade, I would suggest purchasing a Spreader Bar and our Sweeps (hosstools.com/product/wheel-hoe-sweeps-attachment/). With these you can place the Sweeps on the outside and a few cultivator teeth in the middle to create a wider weeding path.

+Hoss Tools I was thinking the exact same thoughts as above for the exact same reasons! To avoid those shipping fees how about a yolk added and/or a 2 section handle even sold as an extension? Slip together and add two 1" screws to secure? It would require a good design but it is do-able. I am over 6ft tall and have back troubles. That is the one factor I always grimace over when I look at tools. Far as I know the market is prime and wide open for correct length tool handles My favorite 'go to tools' all have handles I made myself! If you can imagine cutting hickory saplings by hand, hanging them to dry with a weight on the end.. I have gone through the most time consuming troubles to make my own handles for tools. My friends LOVE the longer handles too. Most tools manufactured these days aren't even designed to change the handles. Sort of a one time use concept. I have a box of various tools I inherited still trying to redesign handles for. I often wish there was some type extension to add just a couple feet of handle to all garden tools. Another observation the head of the tool in your video if the angle were just 3 to 4 degree sharper and the handle longer you could stand and use or stoop a bit with far less fatigue. Trust me when I say everyone be glad you don't have low back troubles! It has forced me to rethink every motion I make. Hope that helps because someone in the hand tool industry has needed a work around for a long time to offer that feature. Good luck and really like what you guys are doing.

+Joe Cwik Thanks. We've brainstormed around the idea of a two-piece handle, but haven't gotten very far into figuring out how to do it without compromising the strength of the tool. We are a tall bunch as well. What we find most often is that people use hand tools way too far away from their body which makes them reach and bend. If you move your feet so that you are working closer to them, you don't have to bend as much. Not a complete solution, but it definitely can help.

I totally agree,long handles make work far easier because better leverage.I replaced my short for handle with a long shovel handle and thats made a big difference its so much easier and very rarely get sore back,I find diging with fork easier on stony ground you dont chop up earthworms either.Please everybody try the long handles.Why havent the toolmakers learnt to make the tool handles longer,we dont mind paying couple of bucks extra.

I got this recently. It works on hard soil and big weeds, but it's not perfect. There's a lot of trouble with clumps of grass (thick set of roots) and clover. (Flexible stem.)

It was designed for shallow cultivation. While it won't replace the digging power of a heavy-duty field hoe, it's very effective for preventing small weeds from becoming large ones.

+David Justice All weeds start out as very small, often hard to see, sprouts. If you eliminate them while they are small, you don't have to deal with them when they become large and begin producing seed. Weeding is a preventative practice, not a reactive one.

+Hoss Tools Exactly! I finally learned this lesson. It's about frequent, shallow disturbance. Just raking in between rows with a leaf rake will disturb the little germinating weed seed enough to keep most of them from ever becoming a weed. Best time to do it is when it's dry. This new hoe will definitely take down larger weeds, though -- I use one similar to it, but the way this one is designed, it should be able to handle larger weeds than mine will.

Most weeds don't tolerate close cutting -- that's why you don't see them growing in the yard that gets frequently mowed.

My garden doesn't look like that, of course that tool is easy to use in such sandbox-like sand/soil. I don't know any gardener whose garden looks like that. That being said, this tool might be effective if it is indeed very sharp. I'd pay that price for a tool that works on a 'real' garden.

Weeding has to be a preventative practice, not a reactive one. You have to provide shallow cultivation to dispatch those weeds before they are visible to the naked eye. Drip irrigation also helps a ton because you're not watering those empty spaces between rows.

if you are gardening in red clay, weeds aren't your problem, You need to grow cover crops to build your soil. My soil is only red clay the first year I get my hands on it, after that, it's black loam.
