Danny's dad always said The secret to gardening is a sharp hoe and a file in your back pocket. Danny shows how he sharpens the batwing hoe from Hoss Tools and his homemade hoe. He shows how he uses both hoes to weed the onions.

Worked on my uncles farm as a youngster. Lots of hoping and picking veggies. He always had a file in his back pocket. He would always tell me to get all the weeds or they would be taller than a hog's back on a week.

Worked with a fifth generation farmer fifty years ago. His hoe was about an inch and a half, 6 inches wide. Like a knife blade, and rounded like a butter knife on bothe ends, also real sharp. He could walk along a row, cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth, explaining how to do it right,, and exert almost no energy. He sliced off roots just below the surface, hoe blade parallel to the ground, just ruffled the dirt, plant fell over without any dirt coming with it. Almost exactly like Mr Danny. Notice he doesn't appear to be working hard, and he hardly disturbs the dirt at all. Some kind of grinder is a must have on a homestead. Use safety glasses and gloves.

I am 68 and grew up on farm, my grand fathers shovel was always rounded off the sharpend from use. Todays shovels are all pointed on the end which is good for digging holes, but for real work the need to be ground and shaped like Dannys Hoe.

@@ssfoste I sharpen all my shovels the same as my dad and uncle did theirs. I don't spray weeds unless I get some noxious weeds that get out of control. And I just spent almost 2 hours today cutting thistles. Some of which were more than 4" in diameter. My Excalibur went right through them. And within 15 minutes the cattle were picking through them as the plants wilted.

Years ago, i bought several hoes made by "Rogue Hoe" They were formed out of the blades from field discs used by farmers in their large fields. They are some of the hardest steel and keep a fantastic edge. Sharpness eases the work.

Between this video and the comments, now I know why none of my garden hoes work like the videos demonstrate. Guess I’ll take them all up to my husband’s shop and get him to help me fix them. 40 years of gardening and never had anyone show me I could adjust the tools to make work easier. No wonder gardening has been killing my energy. Lol? THANK YOU!

For those who must acquire their hoes at a local big box store, first you need to decide if you are going to use it for chopping or scraping. If for scraping, you need to heat the how shank up to red hot and then holding it as you would use it, press down so the hoe blade is close to flat on the floor. you would be amazed how much easier it is to kill weeds and just loosen the top 1/4 inch of soil.

Really liked you video about the sharpening of the hoe. I love a sharp hoe too! Saves so much of my energy. Every late fall i coat all my tools(hoes, shovels, rakes whatever) with used motor oil and an old paint brush. Let them hang until i need them in early spring and it helps preserve them so much.

I have a hoe that belonged to my dad, it’s probably 70 years old at least. The business end of it has been filed so much there is only about an inch left. It was his favorite and often called it his meditation stick because he spent many hours by himself with it in his hands. He could go to the garden mad at the world and come out with a smile on his face. I didn’t understand it then but I do now.

After sharpening my new tools, I case harden the edge. It keeps them sharp much longer. I sharpen my machetes the most, but after case hardening, maybe once a year. After I have the edge I want, I heat it to a dull red glow and push it into a bucket of crushed charcoal. I leave it in there to cool down. Hope this helps cut down on chores for someone!

I was listening to one of your gardening podcasts and heard that your tomatoes died after getting a cold snap...Up here on our Rocky Mtn homestead, I have found that with warm weather crops such as my tomatoes and other warm weather crops, It helps a LOT to keep these plants in the center bed of my 100' high tunnel and to plant them at least 10' away from the west and east walls. The plants do best closer to the east side than the west...It also helps to drop them off of the supports and allow them to be on the ground with a Agribon 30 cover... I was able to keep my tomatoes and other warm season crops from freezing clear until the end of October...even up here in the mtns at 9000' elevation and after it got below freezing several times and snowed outside...Hope this helps :)

My grandpa was born in 1892 and to me, he walked on water. His walking stick was an old hoe he kept by the back door. He'd cut it down to a 1.5 " blade so it was easier to walk with. He would tap that old hoe on the cement back steps and my sister and I would come running. As he walked, he'd use his hoe to point out the weeds from the flowers, good bugs from the bad, or maybe a frog's favorite hiding spot. He always had that hoe and he kept it sharp with an old, broken file he carried in his back pocket. We use to laugh thinking his pants would fall down from the weight. We were to little to understand about suspenders, lol! My aunt got that hoe when Grandpa passed on and I got it from her. It's a beloved family treasure...and it's still sharp and used every year!

Mr Danny, my favorite hoe comes to a triangle point. It is sharp on both sides of the triangle. Its great at getting weeds out but also just for tilling up the soil. My daddy had one when I was a little girl and he used to take us kids to the garden and show us how to till the weeds around the plants with that hoe. It was a great tool. Miss Wanda, do you grow Barberry on your land? I understand it is spread by the birds but the berries are suppose to be great for the heart. They are also very fragrant in the spring. The birds love them and so do bees and butterflies. I got an article sent to me and they sound like such a beautiful plant that could also be used as a privacy hedge. The best thing is we can eat the berries and they are so good for the heart. and circular system.

When I first started gardening where I live now I went to local garden and feed store, oldest building in our town, old timer mr gardner owned it he has since passed away, I was looking at hoes and I said mr gardner, I want one like granny, my great grandmother had, it was much narrower than these and she had a garden about 125feet x mabe 225feet, he said, boy your granny used that hoe for years and sharpened it soo many times that it was wore down, he handed me a new one and said, if you want one like granny's, you better get to work lol. Several years later, my uncle gave me my granny's hoe, I replaced the handle, she was mabe 4.ll and I'm 6feet tall, when other people come over and hoe a few times, they always ask for, granny's hoe.

I worked in the hardware business for 25 years & sharpened customers hoes, shovels & lawnmower blades; According to all the paperwork we got from the implement companies; for example a garden hoe, should be sharpened on the inside edge not the back side of the hoe; I always followed manufacturers recommendations & never had any complaints; when the inside edge is sharpened, the hoe for example will stay sharpened because of the way it is used with a pulling motion towards your body.

I have actually done it both ways. And figured out that when I sharpened it on the outside at the right angle for my height it worked better for me. I have seen other's sharpen the other side with good success also.
