I had 5 goldfish in a small pond and they had babies and needed more room! So only last week we finished upgrading their living quarters and they now have a larger raised pond with seating around the edge. I love watching them and the sound of the fountain. Very relaxing :)

Lucky goldfish! Watching creatures in and around water is very soothing, I agree.

“Raised pond.” Great descriptive name for a specific kind of water feature. Still or in motion-water brings light and joy to a garden. Our own water feature is a small fountain. To heighten the drama we surrounded it with a moat of gravel defined by edgers and dotted with small potted succulents. Also behind the fountain on either side we placed watertight pots with dwarf papyrus. At the end of our video “Succulent Treasures” you can see what the fountain and plants looked like. We also turned two different sizes of faux whiskey barrels into bog gardens with pitcher plants, venus fly traps, and zephyranthes or rain lilies and other plants no longer with us. Our success would have been all the greater had the squirrels 🐿 not dug in them. Today we are eagerly awaiting our new outdoor tiles so we can redo the patio for this year. Hooray! Happy gardening🌱

I saw the small fountain - it looks great. And the succulents were beautifully photographed too. It's great that you label them.

☺️Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video. I discovered that knowing plant ID is crucial in proper care. Not all succulents are alike. Some tolerate cold better than heat; some need more water than others; some prefer shade. Imagine that! 🌱

Very interesting and enjoyable, thanks! Some of those ponds look difficult to maintain while always looking stunning. As maintenance, algae, wildlife and safety are all important issues with a pond, I can only contemplate having a tiny pond (half a wine barrel looks do-able) and learn how to look after - possibly. I admire people who can manage a large pond well! We had a backyard swimming pool for many years and it was such a lot of work to maintain. I don't miss it. Ducks used to fly in and use it as a pond, when the chlorine levels were low. Currently, we have saucers of water set out for visiting birds, a sprinkler and a garden hose, all of which provide the welcome sights and sounds of water. Cleaning the birds' water saucers of sludge and refilling them is, oddly, a bit of a chore for me. I'm not lazy, however I am more of a garden bed fanatic (plants, shrubs, trees, flowers etc) than a garden pond afficionado. :) Hats off to all those amazing and industrious gardeners who designed and manage them!

I think the natural ponds - ie without fish, pumps or chemicals, and with pond snails and oxygenating plants, are fairly easy to maintain - I've done nothing to ours for three years. But it seems that as soon as you add anything - even a single goldfish, then suddenly you have to start managing it all. The Ard Rudah ponds in this video don't have alot of maintenance, but I agree that the very perfect ones as seen in the show gardens, may indeed be difficult to keep looking pristine! Love the ducks. We had a couple land on our town's outdoor swimming pool once. Everyone was a bit surprised.

I’m in Los Angeles and we have issues with mosquitoes here so we’re told not to have any standing water at all, not even a watering can with water left in it. I wonder if, as the UK starts to get warmer because of global warming, if you’ll end up with some restrictions like that as well. It would be a big shame.

I hope not, because I spent many years in my childhood in mosquito-prone places and I've often been thankful that mostly we don't have them here in the UK. Though they do appear in hot summers.

If you don’t use a pump in your small pond how do you keep the water from going stagnant?
@TheMiddlesizedGarden2 жыл бұрын
I think it's the balance of oxygenating weeds and water snails. But I am surprised myself.

Question for you from across the pond. Here in the US we have so many mosquitos in the summer. Do you have mosquitos in the UK? A pond like this without a filter and moving water would be a huge mosquito breeding ground here, making the area unbearable in the evening.
@TheMiddlesizedGarden5 жыл бұрын
We don't have as many mosquitoes as you do. I have a mini pond without a pump and we haven't been bothered with mosquitoes in spite of a very hot summer. But I think that if all our summers were as hot, that might be different. Wildlife and fish do eat mosquito larvae but whether they keep pace with mosquito larvae production is another matter. So I think you probably are in the region where a filter and pump would be necessary.
