Ive got an old Ford 80.....8 horse power....32 inch mower deck that will mow cornstalks or stringy vine weeds and not flinch.. I built a front end loader and backhoe for it . Loader will lift over 1100 pounds 6 feet in the air with the bucket flat...also has quick attach bucket with pallet forks. Backhoe will dig 8 feet deep with bucket flat , dump at 8 feet high, and swivel full 180 degrees. Also has a snow blade that attaches to the loader allowing it to push snow into over 8 feet tall piles. I have used it to make a motocross track. Have pulled a tiller and didn't hardly know it was back there even at full depth in sod. Made a claw to go with the forks and when cleaning a property I was lifting brush piles the size of an average size car. Cultivators and the tiller will hook up and be used even with the backhoe on even though removing the backhoe is only 4 bolts and 2 hoses ..... 8 that's "eight" horse power single cylinder Kohler cast iron engine.

I agree wholeheartedly I owned 2 case garden tractors in the early 90s. I owned a model 444 and a model 220 both were built like tanks. I used the 444 in my 1 1/2 acre garden. I had a plow, single row Cole planter, and a 25 gallon sprayer, used it for many years, fantastic machines. Finally needed a larger tractor so I sold them both and bought a larger 4x4 diesel tractor. The 444 is still running to this day, not sure about the 220 I never knew who ended up with it.

What a great machine. Such a shame they do not make them like this anymore. I have been into the IH cub cadets for a long time but they just are not quite large enough. A few years ago I picked up a 1985 Bolens HT23. It’s a beast. Has 26” rear tires which helps a bit. I use it for my weekly mowing with a 54” deck. Unfortunately, the attachments are a pain to take on and off. I used to snow blow with a 48” two stage blower but now I just mow and haul stuff.

My implement hook-up concern has more to do with how easy it is to unhook the belly mower deck and then hook-up another implement. A garden tractor that does it all, is typically used for the main mowing machine. I'm hesitant on buying a plow for my Gravely Pro 20M for that reason. A none abused Case like this one is hard to find. They commonly want a small fortune for them if you can find one. If they don't offer at least two implements with it, it's likely a no go for me.

Saw information recently about why the change was made. Guess what, the government! Seems mandates were issued that the mower blades had to stop in a few seconds when turned off. Apparently the most practical way to achieve this was with electric clutches. It was problematic to adapt e-clutches to the flywheel side of engines, thus the change! I believe a mechanical style brake was tried with the original Case clutch but was abandoned after problems.@@BuildALotAcres

My first garden tractor I bought was a case, what sold me was the big tires on the back. I bought it brand new from a dealer with the biggest mower deck they made and a front blade to push snow. The first time I got it and mowed there was a hill in the back yard and I was FREE WHEELING down that hill. I called the dealership back up and told him what happened and he proceeded to tell me that on that hydrostatic lever there was an indent for forward or reverse, so when you down a steep hill make sure you run the engine full throttle and have it in the indent to keep you from free wheeling down the hill. He also told me that if that didn’t work that I would have to buy an additional pump for the tractor. I could never understand why case didn’t engineer that with the correct pump to start with so someone wouldn’t get hurt!! I sold it the next spring and bought a John Deere 430 and had it for 25 years. Night and day difference between the two, and I have nothing good to say about the case. Obviously the dealership had some responsibility for not being upfront about that issue and making it right!!
@BuildALotAcres
@BuildALotAcres Жыл бұрын
@@richardcrabb732 The issue you describe is a common complaint among new users. They started offering an add on holding valve kit in about 1979, and it was standard equipment built into the TCV starting in late 1985. I haven’t had any issues on my 21 acres. I’ve pulled 5x10 trailers full of 8-10 people on hayrides down hill and was fine. The 430 is much more complex to work on, and doesn’t share implements with many of the other models. I’m sure also considerably more money at the time. Both have positives and negatives. Sorry to hear you didn’t have a good experience with your Case.

@@BuildALotAcres A brand like New Holland would a cool brand to purchase such a tractor. My local county fair has that company putting out cool tractors on display each year. The way to do it would be to put a mini tractor in a area where kids could do things such as pushing dirt and using a mini excavator attachment like how some playgrounds have a mini digger for a sandbox. The kid gets all excited and then when Christmas rolls around the kid has a tractor. It would have been cool of John Deere did this 10+ years ago but I wouldn't trust them to do things such as allowing parents to buy spare parts off of Amazon Prime. Oh man, the act of repairing their own little tractors would make them excited as well. The kids could use a roto tiller attachment for a large garden. Dad and the Kiddo could build a small "barn"(shed) which the kid could park & clean their tractor while having a place for the friends to hand out. If I were to have kids I would actually have their bedrooms be detached from the house with in-law suites. One big advantage for me about the Case hydraulic system vs others' hydrostatics is that if you don't like something about it, you can actually change it. You can swap pumps, swap valves, add valves, increase pressure to implement circuits, etc etc. It is all standard hydraulic stuff which is not exactly like Legos but if you are familiar with hydraulics you can modify it as you see fit. The hydrostatic systems have a pretty hard limit on pressure and flow, so while you can hook it up to whatever external implement you want, you're just not EVER going to be pushing it to 2000+ psi. With a Case, you could.

True. Lots of people make custom projects out of the hydraulic system. The lack of a driveshaft also enables easier modifications

@@BuildALotAcres There is a 442 rolling chassis for sale near me. What would it take to get it up and running? I know an engine would be required, but could I "lego" together the hydraulics? Unfortunately, this would be my learning opportunity for hydraulics...so I wondered if I am getting into too much. I have experience swapping engines...just put a Vanguard in my Sears GT6000, but would like a GT with bigger tires to smooth the right out in rough field areas I want to mow with my tow behind rough cut mower.

@@jbmortensen The hydraulics aren’t overly complicated. They can be dangerous though if not done correctly. You want to make sure you have the reliefs set to the right pressures or you could blow lines. I’d recommend finding someone local who is familiar with the Case/Ingersoll line

@@jbmortensen You have a number of engine options, but the two best are: Onan B48, and the B&S 16hp from an old Sears or Snapper garden tractor. Both are opposed twins, and both have a crankshaft that can supply power from both ends. The Case PTO has the right hole spacing to fit both shafts.

These are great old tractors, but only if you have the time and know-how to fix them yourself. Old guys mechanically inclined and who like working on old tractors would love to keep an old Ingersoll alive and running good. I'm thinking of selling mine. Ingersoll 3016 with about 1100 hrs.
@BuildALotAcres
@BuildALotAcres Жыл бұрын
I don't think you'll have too much trouble selling it. I agree with your points. Its defintely a hobby that takes up time and often times money. New stuff is just built so cheaply, its almost throw away "quality". Anything "decently" built costs a fortune new, and is all computerized and about impossible to work on yourself.

I have two 3018 and 4018. Big drawback to design is hand actuated travel control vs foot, the slow travel speed for grass cutting, poor electrical design and higher gas consumption/parts availability on onan. I find myself using my 2007 Craftsman DGS6500 to cut my grass as it has higher travel speed and foot control. The DGS is considered inferior by some but its a good grass cutter and easy to work on and find parts.

Also dual trans, 9.50 lugs on the rear, heavy weights all around, 3pt hitch, all new hyd system with newer front blade with hyd angle. A real nice working machine. 81 model, 2418 with the orig k361 with a loader. Also dual trans and a modified and improved front axle to deal with my abuse! There were other Garden Tractors like the Ariens GT16H, GT17H, GT18H, and GT20H that had many features the Case did not have. Like front, middle, and rear hydraulic lifts. Front, middle, and rear shaft drive PTO's with electric clutches. The lifts utilized one hydraulic cylinder that could be switched from front, mid. and rear lifts and two separate electric PTO clutches. As well as power steering and a Dana rear end that was much strong than the Case rear end

I don’t know a whole lot about Ariens GT’s. Having the ability to select which rock shaft is used would be nice. Many Case/Ingersoll owners install selector valves to accomplish this. Certain models of CCI did have power steering from the factory. The rear end of the Case is pretty substantial. I’ve picked up 500 or so pounds on the 3 point, and hauled thousands of pounds in trailers many times. I appreciate you giving your opinion. I have an MF 14 GARDEN TRACTOR HYDRO and it has a very responsive hydrostatic drive system anyway I like the shorter wheel size because a machine like yours would easily tip over around my hilly area much less advantage s with a tall tire around my home by far and my massey is much easier to get on and off then your tracktor is I know because my older friend has a tractor just like yours and I have a hard time getting on and off . My MASSEY has a hydraulic lift underneath the tractor my tractor is from 1970 built a few yrs before the model th at you have and my tractor would do circles around your tractor for sure so don't advertise a tractor that you can't back up I have very steep hills around my place and a tractor like yours would almost be useless because it would tip over to easy at my home.
