Been golfing for 30 years and low to mid single digit handicap. ALWAYS struggled with my irons and never de-loft them. Have always flipped and slid (and probably stand up) but I use my timing to try and compensate. Most days I'm ok, but some days I'm terrible. I overcome it with hitting good drives, chips and putts. The rolling the hands over is something I have never seen. Not like you show. It feels to me like a reverse of the flip that I do. I also am steep. I will be heading to the range this afternoon or tomorrow and trying all of this and have no doubt if I put in the practice, my iron game will improve significantly. I really appreciate the KZbin video. Thank you.

Thanks Clay, finally a pro that showed and explained to me the piece I have been missing for 30 years - the turning “in” of the wrist to close the club head. I have been away from golf for 16 years but now at practice I am hitting such nice compressed irons. I have had a good looking swing forever, reach sub 80 rounds when playing my top days, but never consistent, ever so often losing it high and to the right, not understanding,rolling over the wrists to compensate, having some quick hooks, the sense to be forced to rush a little bit. The sense of the ball sliding sideway on the face. Now they don’, full stop This is world class stuff! Grateful /Andy

I implemented this recently and it works like a charm. The key for me, was @ the 3'47" mark. Gets my club perfectly on plane, and you can feel theres more power packed into that position. I even now focus at the spot in front of the ball and am getting an extra clubs distance on ALL my irons. ...and flying over the green. lmao. THANKS!...SO much for this video!

Ok so I know this is an older video but it kind of gave it a chance since I've been having a problem with my irons. A little back ground I started playing when I was 28 I am now about to turn 60 on June 22. Well I stop playing about 2010 and started again beginning of 2019. So I started from the beginning and tried to work on my swing. Well back in the day I used to hit my 8 iron 160. When I began again I now I am older but still I should be hitting it at least 150. Well was having a terrible time getting back to my distances. Well I watched this video and understood exactly what he was teaching. I went today and warmed up. Well I started hitting my irons using this technique and guess what? I was hitting my 8 iron and avg of 172, my 6 iron 200 yrds, my 9 165 yrds, My driver!! 302!!!!! Yup and I am 60!!!!! Man thank you sooooo much!!!

There is not much instruction on this essential topic. It's as if teachers know this and keep it secret, focusing too much on other areas of the swing, whereas where the rubber hits the road is really where it's at.

@@TopSpeedGolf I went to the driving range and worked on it. It was relatively easy to figure it out with irons. I started with my 9 iron that I usually use for distances of 130 yards and I ended up hitting close to 145 yards. 5 iron was close to 200yards. But even better, most hits were straight hits... no fades. It was a little more difficult with my driver. Just need to work more on it. I noticed if I slow down my swing with the driver it helps and I still get quite good distances. I guess with the driver we all try to hard :) Thanks again!!

The out-in downswing or also called over-the-top comes from simply initiating the downswing with the arms while there isn't yet a change of the weight (which must be the first thing to do as teached by Mr. Hogan) to produce the down-movement of the arms and mainly the clearenceof the lower body for the correct pathway (in-out) that the club should travel for a solid-square clubface contact, Clay has stated that very clearly and is very correct.

I've added about 20 yards to each one of my clubs by hitting them "pure". For me the biggest eye opener and best practice was to open up my stance which forced my hands to be ahead of the ball and really compress the ball. The sound is amazing as well.
@jcsi173 жыл бұрын
At what point do I actually bow the lead hand/wrist to square the club? At the slot or parallel to the ground during down swing or right before the impact position? It looks like Dustin Johnson and some of the pros do it at the top of the back swing. If we take that further, can I start with my lead hand/wrist bowed at the set-up (in other words, start the swing in the "impact position"--hips turned, hands forward/shaft leaning forward, and lead hand/wrist bowed, and club-face square--then swing with the goal of returning to that position)?
@TopSpeedGolf3 жыл бұрын
There's no set time to bow the lead hand/wrist as long as it gets in the correct position at impact. If it works better for you to get there at the top of the backswing, then go with that. I think if you try your second proposal, you'll find you have little power and won't be able to maintain that position throughout the swing. Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor

I got to the point with my swing where I am doing all of this, except with a strong grip so I don't have to turn my wrist down into impact. I guess its not quite the same, but it feels better than trying to square it up. I am working on it though, by keeping the strong grip for now and playing with an open face I am forcing myself to learn the wrist turn. Cheers, this has been a big help, going back a couple years ago when I subbed ur website for a season!

Hey Clay Just a note to say that you are without a doubt the finest golf instructor on the Internet. I became a member on March 14 th 2016 and have been through the course many times. My game has changed dramatically for the better because of it. One of my weak areas was getting down the move. I under stood what to do but my brain kept getting in the way until I came across this iron video series. For some reason everything just clicked! If you can put together a video series like this one for fairway woods, my game will be complete. Thanks again for creating Top Speed Golf member forever John Jaconsky

Lefty here - Clay this helped me so much! I find if I don’t have the wrist turn, it’s a complete shank. When I turn it over, it’s a beautiful shot and ball flight. After we’re in the slot, what forces you make that wrist turn consistently?

I would try to do it as early as possible in the downswing. It just takes reps to get to where it's second nature. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

At 24:27 the slow motion swing it seems to me you are not bending the wrists as early as you say. Care to expand? When I do this, it definitely straightens out my iron shots, but I am curious about the swing points there.

He is exaggerating in the demonstration and you should too when you try to do it. Feel is not real and often times you need to feel like you're moving it a mile to get an inch change. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Do you also want to have that bowed wrist action with a driver to shut the face? Would that help promote a more on plane / inside-out swing with a driver?

Thanks for the latest video Clay. On your first segment I have notice that I am now starting to push my iron shots to the right and I am guessing that it is because I am starting to leave the face open like you demonstrated in segment #1. But when I try to roll my wrist to close the face like you were showing I am having trouble with over doing it and smother hooking the ball. Is there a key point in the downswing that I can use to know when to start and stop the move with the left wrist? Thanks.
@TopSpeedGolf4 жыл бұрын
My pleasure! Sounds like you're on the right track. Just ease off the feeling a little bit to get it to straighten out. Play well!
@timnew76624 жыл бұрын
@@TopSpeedGolf Thank you. With your video tips I have started getting the shown lag at the mid-thigh point of the down swing and thus the needed shaft lean at impact. Your video in the first segment showed me why I was starting to push the ball to the right, (not badly but just enough to miss the greens to the right) and what I needed to do to cure it. It was just that in the past when I bowed the left wrist to square the face I was closing the face so much it resulted in the pull smother hook. And I do have the tendency to use a grip a little on the strong side. Which is likely a big factor in why that was happening. But thanks for everything you are doing.

Great info. I lose my compression at impact. I need consistency. I’ll hit 6 out of 10 good. 2 that are ok. 2 that are total scrubs. If you can, please do a video on checkpoints in the swing. Thank you sir.

If I can make a suggestion: go to free golf online, (same videos found on youtube) you'll find a guy that takes you step by step through this very swing, it is just broken down into finer and more detailed points. Again, it is the same swing, just the key points are broken down better. The gentleman is a redheaded English man that is very easy to spot. Its a very easy swing to take to the course if you actually follow the steps offered. Using a mirror is very handy. I went from being a snowman golfer to actually having a pretty swing and playing competitive golfer.

Thanks! Make the same swing as you would with a PW. The longer clubs are naturally going to be more difficult to hit.

Typically, you'll come down more flush with the turf. Those who come down steep will have toe down divots usually.

Would you rotate the wrist when you get towards level on the downswing? I tend to twist the screw or rotate the wrist at the top to start the downswing.

The most important position is the one you're in at contact, so if you find it easier to do it at the top of the backswing and it works for you, go for it! Play well! Nate | TSG Instructor
