I’ve been waiting for this video. So cool to see your amazingly produced videos that are different from the common KZbin crowd gain some traction. I’m seconding your views on the DGT SE. It’s my least expensive guitar but most often played one these days. Some slightly sharp fret ends and wonky knobs but the rest is spot on. Now I want a core DGT! Sigh…

Totally agree. I saw a video from a well-known KZbinr who said he didn't like PRS guitars because they were all so similarly well made, he preferred a Gibson Les Paul where you had to hunt for a good one, that was 'Mojo' to him. I will take a well-made and good-sounding guitar any day. I have never been able to measure a guitar's Mojo, just some I like better than others.

The fact that them all are very consistent and nearly identical for every unit per series they produce, is amazing, and may feel like 'soulless' to some soul mongering misunderstood lads. Reliability instead of so called mojo, even on their SE line ups as well. I don't know how they achieve that, long story short, I sold one of mine back in 2021, and got me surprised when trying out another one at a store a year later, that 'feel' I had in the tonality, the same as the one I owned. Crazy.

I love my PRS SE Custom 24 in terms of build quality, feel and how it plays, but not a fan of its pickups. It sounds too muffled for my liking. The split tones like u mentioned are very bright, almost like a piezo pickup or an acoustic pickup, but if the amp or pedals are dialed in right it can sound like a good single coil. I personally like PRS, but i can understand what people mean by there is no soul. They are made so well with such good consistency in QC that u know exactly what u are getting which is a good thing, but when people say a guitar has soul they are referring to the individual quirks that adds unique character to an instrument that makes that instrument stand out. Its the inconsistency in say a Gibson Les Paul that makes one speak to you versus another one. weather that is a good thing to u or not, it makes something seem unique and interesting and the consistency of the PRS guitars lack those quirks or defining characteristics that other guitars might have to to their consistency. Thats what those people are referring too. I personally think the consistency is what makes a PRS so good.
@SuperdangerStudios
@SuperdangerStudios Жыл бұрын
Agreed re the 85/15s pickups. Really don’t sound great split. Eventually will put Fralin PAFs there or maybe Unbuckers. I get what people are “trying” to say when they play vintage guitars. I think half of it is psychological as well. Which doesn’t mean it’s fake, but the decades of imagery and media associated with Gibson and Fender is a powerful thing!
@orryfishburne5326
@orryfishburne5326 Жыл бұрын
@@SuperdangerStudios for sure! Agree with u 100% Interesting u said u wanted to put Fralin in yours, that's exactly what i want to do as well. Not sure if i want to go with Pure PAFs or consult Fralin to see what would be a good pair for a p90 humbucker in the neck and then some humbucker in the bridge. Probably end up with the Pure PAFs out of simplicity though. Not completely sure yet besides Fralin

I think what people say by this guitar has no soul is inherently PRS’ best quality and their biggest issue. CONSISTENCY. I think guitar players appreciate consistency, but they’d be lying if they said it’s actually what they wanted. There’s a reason our favorite guitar players guitars are so desired. Two PRS DGT SE’s from the same production line are going to be extremely close in fit and finish, quality, and tone. In 2023 two player series Fender Telecasters from the same line have a almost painstaking possibility of being drastically different from each other in fit and finish, quality, and tone. For the guitarist who just wants a good instrument PRS is perfect. If you’re looking for individuality and an instrument that has its own character you’re better off buying the best fender you can within your budget, and modding it over time to make it your own.

Nice review! I have a used DGT core that was about $2100 and it is probably my best playing and best sounding axe-even though I really love my Teles and Lee Paul. The neck seemed too scrawny at first, but I find I can play tricky chords more easily without even trying .One thing… keep the pots in GSP (Grissom Standard Position). The guy I bought my DGT from switched them and I will eventually go back. I want to be able to do volume swells and dirt level tweaks on the knob that’s easiest to grab. He had good reason to do it this way.

Good content, my DGT SE came with stability issues as well. I found John Mann’s (the bridge designer) video on how to install and set up the bridge. All six screws have to be set at the same exact height while using a 2.5mm hex as a feeler gauge. Now I can dive bomb my dgt and zero tuning issues.

Another amazingly entertaining video! I got my PRS SE DGT 2 months back. The only thing that I could not live with is the knobs. They are ugly. I changed them to the lampshade knobs, the ones they use on core models. I got it Pleked and it plays as well as my other core PRS now, flawless. I am also waiting for the locking tuners to arrive. It is indeed an amazing guitar for the price! I believe the "soul" that people talk about are stuff like G string not staying in tune, cannot intonate, unpredictability, inconsistency, and having to "fight" the guitar. PRS guitars have none of these. Thank you Alex for this video again.
@SuperdangerStudios
@SuperdangerStudios Жыл бұрын
I hear that on the knobs. Probably on my list too in the future! I should probably take this guitar to Glsser for a PLEK and have this play perfectly. I agree, the notion that you have to fight a guitar is bizarre gatekeeper nonsense. Thanks so much for watching!

@@SuperdangerStudios I’m one of the people you described: I massively respect PRS and I have one. It’s objectively the best made, longest sustaining, most in tune and most versatile guitar I own. It also hardly gets played outside of recording. I gravitate towards (‘bond with’) the tele, strat, LP stuff for noodling and gigs. I also find the PRS a bit too ‘bling’ to play out, and I’m not massively keen on the neck profile versus, say, a 6os-style strat or tele. If was to own just 1 PRS long term, it would indeed be a DGT, with the simple gold finish. Hence me enjoying your commentary so much - I think you captured the views of alot of players.

It's quite simple. You are totally right that there is an inherent bias against PRS. Many people, myself included, just find them extremely ugly. BUT i think some people might not even realize that is why or they don't want to admit that is why they don't like them so they pull out the "no mojo" explanation.

I think the “got no soul” thing is actually a comment to the absolute consistency demonstrated by PRS. You can literally grab any PRS product off the wall at a guitar store and they all feel, play, and sound consistently great. On the other hand, Fenders and Gibsons are inconsistent. You can grab two or three of the exact same model and they may all feel, play, and sound different. I guess that could be a good thing or a bad thing, but one thing I know is that if I play a PRS, even the cheap ones, I’m going to like it. Great video!

So I am looking at the Swamp Ash Special BUT love the DGT as well. I've not seen you demo the SAS. So for overall play, especially for the Blues, would you lean to the DGT. What about the 24-08? PS: I already own a Custom 24, McCarty 594 and the Silver Sky Could sure use some decision making help Thanks to anyone reading this out there

Great collection so far. Since you already have a cu24 the 24-08 is not needed, the swamp ash is great but overlaps more of the cu24 tones. The DGT really sounds so different from your current setup and rocks on the blues. Have you played one in person?

Why do you say it's better than the Customer 24 SE. Honestly, I don't really know the difference. I'm a 60 yr old bassist that has finally started playing guitar more seriously. I have an Epiphone SG, a Peavey Detonator, a strat I built and a Custom 24 SE. None were bought new. Genuinely curious why you would choose it over the Custom 24? I know I would prefer a separate volume for each pickup, but other than that, what's the difference?
@SuperdangerStudios
@SuperdangerStudios 8 ай бұрын
I love my custom 24 but here are the main reasons I dig the DGT. The pickups are amazing on the DGT. I love every tone they produce. I like the 85/15s on the 24 but I don’t love every tone. If there was something I’d change it’d be that first. The 24 needs to have the neck pickup further down the body than a traditional 22 fret guitar, this makes the neck pickup more mid focused and less bass response. Not a problem but a preference for me. However I do love the neck on the 24. Probably the most comfortable neck on any guitar I have.

Maybe it’s because he got to design the whole guitar….!!! Switching to different scale length and neck radius and woods when your used to a strat makes sense why he didn’t like them. He designed his silver sky just like an old strat, makes sense why he likes them now.

Sometimes I think the “problem” with PRS is that they are so well made and consistent that they don’t have the “magic” finds, like with a Strat that it took playing 150 guitars to find. You pull one off the rack and it will sound exactly like the one next to it on the rack. I think that’s what people mean by soul. I have a truly great Strat … but why aren’t they all truly great? Taylor has this problem … they are all essentially perfect which somehow makes them less good somehow. They also used to be really expensive, but with the SE and S2 models that isn’t really an issue anymore.

Yes I think the earlier branding has pre determined a lot of peoples opinions. Also visually it is very different from Fender or Gibson so people get emotional when it comes to those kind of things which I understand!

That model has bigger frets. Can you speak to the size of those French compared to an SE Custom 24? I'm very curious as to whether those frets are not only taller but also a little wider as opposed to fender's currently popular taller & narrower frets, which personally I cannot go for.
@SuperdangerStudios
@SuperdangerStudios 5 ай бұрын
They definitely feel taller and wider than the cu24. By a lot. If you can try one out in person I would recommend it. It does not feel like a typical PRS neck.

Wait a second. You're saying one of the major guitar companies makes guitars that "nobody loves"? Lol..Silver Sky SE was the top guitar in the world for multiple years in a row. Great video! I've owned all kinds of designs: body shapes, 7 & 8 strings, fanned frets, baritones, w/e. I've learned 2 things: 1. Classic designs exist and endure for a reason. I've never seen a prototype of anything that didn't need a version 2, and usually 3 and 4. The classics have gone through this process already. 2. Custom builds are almost never worth it. Even if they check all the boxes there is no way to tell how it will come together until it's built. My $400 Ibanez has spoiled me for most guitars: jumbo frets, thin & flat neck, 25.5" scale, and 2 humbuckers are now all required. All I want now is all of that plus a good tremolo. This guitar is out because no jumbo frets haha

Really awesome video (you got a new subscriber!). I’ve been having gas lately and considering this model or the 594. I have an s2 custom 24 (upgraded the components with all core parts except the tuners) and a core silver sky. Would you recommend the dgt vs. the 594 to add to my arsenal? (Also have 2 Taylor acoustics)
@SuperdangerStudios
@SuperdangerStudios Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the sub! I also have an S2 custom 24 love that thing. I think one of the biggest differences between the 594 and the DGT SE is the neck. The neck on the DGT SE is tall and the edges are not rolled nearly as much as the other SE guitars. Do you like having a floating bridge? That would obviously put you in the DGT camp. I feel like the 24 you have covers alot of the ground the DGT covers while the 594 would be a very different tone and sound. If you want to add something completely different, the 594 is the way to go while if you want to just take a sidestep then the DGT is your move. Hope this helps!

Man, this video was killer from start to finish! Really well thought out and insightful comments on the guitar and KILLER PLAYING! A question, if you find the time… You clearly know what you’re doing and have played VERY nice guitars. I consider myself to be a competent player and I am definitely use to a certain level of quality (an R9 is my go to guitar for gigging and studio). I would love a solid quality guitar that’s reliable for some of the dingier bars and Honky Tonks that we play in. Haha. Is this “the one”? Will I be unable to get over the difference between its quality compared to really high end models..? Thanks!
@SuperdangerStudios
@SuperdangerStudios 6 ай бұрын
Thank you for the kind words! It’s a great guitar. I do feel a difference going from my core model SC594 to this guitar but not nearly big enough to make a difference in my playing. I will say that this guitar is a very different feel from an R9. The floating bridge, the neck shape, and the pickups make this a very unique beast that can emulate many of my favorite sounds. If you can, play one in person. But I’ll say that this continues to be the go to guitar for me when recording and on the stage, unless I’m doing country (Tele)
