Brendan Hay man that tone in the studio, he’s gonna bring the 70’s back in this lame music industry. I come back often just for his solo.

I’ve discovered over many years and many gigs that each room has its own key. For example our church is in the key of A. Play an Ab or A# and you don’t get the feedback you want/need. Hit an A with some distortion, set your guitar in its stand and come back an hour later and it is still playing the A. It’s beautiful because so many of the songs we play are played in A or transposed to A for the benefit of singers. Play a song and it really comes alive.
@PotatoSmashGamer3 жыл бұрын
I know I'm a year late but that's called the resonant frequency (of the room).
@ace6458 Жыл бұрын
It’s would seem that a room being perfectly in pitch with one of the 12 semi tones would be rare, I would imagine most rooms are sharp of flat to some degree.

Love HiWatts. I have an old CUstom 100 (1972). BTW, you can't really burn in an amp on Standby. Standby removes the high voltage and only allows the heaters to light up. Besides, it is really the speakers that need to be broken in, not the amp :)

The electrolytics need warming in and the tubes will get sweeter before they die . I live in the UK and have messed with Hi Watts among other things for 50 years . I have just serviced a 1974 Custom 100 which was all original except for one Brimar as PI . Pre 1975 these have a problem in that if you get a rectifier or MT short , HT can go to chassis so your chassis earth points must be clean and good . In 75 they changed the MT to correct this possibility with an HT centre tap . After the full electro cap replacement ( I hid the new 30mm diameter radials inside the old cans so it looks pretty original ) including the bias cap , and up the wattage on the bias Rs . Cranked , on the old tubes after increasing B+ to the new electrolytic caps over a few hours to our standard mains here ,it sounded amazing but , I suggested to the owner that he should expect to replace the quad soon , even if treated gently . Wasted advice , he drove it flat out over the following weekend at a festival and now has a quad of matched JJs in there having retired the original Mullards . These amps are nothing like Fender or Marshall in configuration, so everyone who hears one for the first time is blown away by their tone . In my own amps , except my full tube bass amps which are fairly unique - particularly the huge OTs , I borrow from Fender , Marshall , Hi Watt and Vox in that I use an EF86 in the front end as well as ECC83s for a boost or superclean sound through by-pass switching to drive just Master Volume and Presence before the PI and out .

Ok, that “High Enough” solo 7:41 - that was orders of magnitude, best, soulful playing I’ve heard you do, Rhett. You’re an awesome player, but that solo, you’re treading in Gilmour, Bonamassa, Page land - and belong there playing like that. I f*ckin felt that in my guts. Screw the gear, amps, guitars, etc. - that was the sound of the _player_. The dynamics, pacing, the way you breathed through your guitar - you lived with the guitar in the moment of that solo and it was magnificent. You forgot anyone was watching or listening - you were playing for you. You have magic, man. More of that amazing expression.

John Mayer described this as a sort "feedback loop". The loop of playing well with a good tone and then hearing it makes the guitarist play even better as they like what they hear more and more and more. It's a powerful thing and you can see it with Rhett in that solo. Tremendous

My goodness. I realized the beauty of HiWatt amps by finally using the HiWatt model in my Helix. It’s been two and a half years since I disbanded my pedalboard and sold my tube amp. But I find myself just CRAVING that DR20 now. It’s crazy expensive but I feel like... if I could play that amp for the rest of my life, I wouldn’t mind it. It gets raw and ballsy when you need it to, but gentle and pretty when you dial it back a bit. This amp seems like the perfect voice for anything besides actual high gain tones. Beautiful, beautiful playing btw. Rhett. And Thanks for letting people take a look behind the scenes in the studio!
