You are spot-on. The PRS SE DGT is without a doubt one of the highest quality, best sounding guitars on the market today that costs less than $1,000, and I would argue, than most guitars in the $1,000 to $2,000 range as well. I own over 50 guitars (I have been playing and collecting guitars for 60 years) and this guitar is one of the best of all I own, including several PRS Core models and a number of “vintage” Fenders, Gibsons, Rickenbackers, and Gretschs.

Fantastic guitars...I got one from PMT for £760 and it came with a tag outlining it was setup by PRS UK ticking each check (nut, releif, intonation etc). It was Great right out of the box. Great pickups, smooth frets, best coil tap I have on any of my guitars. Incredibly versatile tones. Love the dual volume knobs. Very resonant too, it is much much better than a CU24 SE I have. Its getting more play than my strats at the minute.

Played a goldtop version of this last week and was really impressed. I've been in a really weird place since doubting to buy a 'budget' guitar and wondering whether I should get this or save up som money and get a core model (which I haven't played before). Great playing as always, John!

My man, I just got this guitar and I could have bought a core if I wanted to, but no reason to because these are so amazing. I'm a huge Fender and Gibson guy, but these are incredible. I got the McCarty 594 SE a few months back and couldn't resist the DGT. I could do a whole tour with one of these. They are that good.

I've had the gold top for 8 months, gigged it extensively and it's the first time in years of gigging I have just taken the one guitar. Also bought from Peach because I wanted to choose the weight, 7 pounds 10 ounces. Two things I've changed, I couldn't handle 6100 frets, so have taken them down to 6130, medium jumbo works so much better for me. Also fitted Gotoh locking tuners and a Tusq nut. Pickups are great. Humbucker mode is wonderful, the 75% coil split to my ears initially sounds a bit more P90 than strat/tele type single coil, but roll the volume pot down 2 notches and the treble bleed seems to take the pickups more into strat/tele mode ish. Very usable tool for a gigging player.

I bought one. The thing I really don’t like about it is the polly finish. Makes the guitar feel plastic. I’m going to strip the finish on the neck and tung oil it with a satin finish. That should help. I swapped the electronics out with RailHammer HumCutters, single volume, single tone, and push/push kill switch. Took out the stock bridge and put in a Musiclily brass block/saddles bridge. Guitar is far better than stock but still dislike the polly finish.

I agree with you. I've not been a real PRS fanboy in the past. I liked them and have owned several but did not keep them. Yes, a lot of guitars come and go. All of the PRSs were good. I bought after your and other reviews. I chose the gold top version with "moons" probably a year or so ago. For a while they were not easy to find, and people were charging a premium for them - some buying new and reselling for more. I didn't go for that. But the availability is good now and you can even find used ones - which I'd probably recommend just to save a bit. I buy most of my guitars used, I get more guitar for the money that way. I love the round slightly chunky neck shape on this guitar. It feels fantastic. I added luminlays (because I like those on my guitars). I also changed the knobs to the amber PRS types. The switch location is a little strange to me as are the controls - just because I am more used to typical Strats and Gibsons. The pickups are very nice - and I usually change pickups in almost every guitar I have it seems. These are staying in there. The "partial" single coil push/pull really sounds great with these pickups too. For me, that is very high praise. Just about all my other guitars have changed pickups. It is a very comfortable and great sounding and looking guitar. I like it better than the real PRS models I have played. The great neck shape, feel, pickups, playability is top notch. Yes, it is a lot of money for a guitar from Indonesia, but they are making fantastic guitars. GREAT guitar. It deserves more than a gig bag really, but prices of cases are insane now. So would rather not increase the price and am living with the gig bag.

You will NEVER be accused of being an idiot! This guitar looks amazing, and sounds amazing while you're playing it. I recently purchased the Schecter C-1 Exotic, and I am convinced that this guitar could also be a candidate for Best Guitar Under 1000 Pounds or Dollars. For $850, it has many of the same features of the DGT, and has more modern features like 24 frets, and a Graph Tech nut. Also, it has a satin-ish finish on the back of the neck for super smooth transitional playing. I recently purchased the PRS SE NF3, and it's a good guitar as well, but I still prefer my C-1 exotic. Thank you for the post, and your thoughts on this guitar! The SE line is an amazing value proposition, PERIOD!

Great review! I’m a fan of PRS too, especially with humbuckers, and just got an S2 McCarty in the same veneer as your terrific DGT. My only criticism of the SE guitars is their polyurethane finish - I just did not like the feel of the neck. That more so than the subtler differences in pickups and electronics was why I went for a US made PRS. And an S2 594 is half the cost of the US made DGT. Beautiful playing, by the way, as always!

Nice . I don't know if its the best guitar overall, but its certainly the best for someone in a covers band who only wants to take one guitar to a gig. Neck on mine is fantastic, its incredibly resonant, great pick ups and a very good split coil sound for those strat like moments. I have a Japanese Telecaster which is also amazing and actually cost less, but the PRS DGT is way more versatile and worth every penny wherever it was built.

The only competition in my mind, and of a similar vein, is the Revstar Standard. But I'm always harping on about how great those are. I'm more curious about the 9.5s going on. Because (much like the Revstar) I'm very very much a pusher of the 9.5 gauge string set.
@michael1
@michael1 Ай бұрын
TBH I can't see the point in having a short scale length if you just end up putting higher gauge strings on to compensate. The whole point is to make it slinkier. The main reason for not having a short scale length is people who just palm mute and play the low E with high gain. I think for pretty much everything else it's a win, you're going to be able to play more expressively and with less effort from your left hand even if you have a short period of adjustment to the slinker feel - but if you don't like that then I don't think your "best guitar under £1000" or whatever can be guitars with short scale length. You're effectively saying you don't like the feel of a shorter scale length and would probably be happier with a strat or super strat style guitar. I think Johns logic is a little flawed when he says more girth to the strings because there's obviously a big overlap in the gauges you get between a set of 8s, 9s, 10s or 11s. e.g a B string in a set of 8s is typically an 11, so that means if you play 9s or 10s then you have a thinner E string than a set of 8s B string. So if you can play the high e on a set of 9s or 10s, then 5 out of 6 of the 8s are a higher gauge than that and won't feel thinner, they'll have more girth. Thus it makes no sense to imagine 8s as all being thin strings. They really only have 1 string that is thinner than you normally play : the high E. The real difference you feel from a lower gauge set is down to the tension, not girth. And that 's the same thing you feel playing a short scale vs longer. If you don't like that feeling I don't think you can say your fave guitar is a short scale because it's a design decision they've made precisely to make the strings feel like they do. I also think the fact most guitars have a 25.5" scale length means that people mistakenly think PRS have done something magic to make their guitars feel easier to play, down to craftsmanship or whatever, but all they are experiencing is a shorter scale length compared with the rest of their guitars (which obviously the revstar has too, and gibson)

I say you need both! 🙂The sounds of the Revstar II P90 is really great. There are many that do no like the "Focus" switch, but I love it. Maybe not so great playing chords or doing rhythm but for soloing it really boosts the mids nicely. The neck is larger than the DGTSE, which I really do like. John's video for the revstar standard spends several minutes struggling to find any difference with the (£1000 more) professional, so I'd suggest the standard is at least as high quality as this, if not higher. In terms of sound, well Chris Buck plays one and there aren't many guitar players getting nicer noises out of guitars (even if you prefer a different genre) - Matteo Mancuso plays one as well, although his custom version has different pickups so it's possibly makes little sense to listen to Matteo's tone and buy a revstar + helix. You can't get a revstar with locking tuners (possibly not that big a deal in terms of playing it) or a trem (maybe a dealbreaker if your style relies on it) but you do get stainless steel frets.

Wont touch an SE again as I think the QC in the factory for my cases was naff. Of course one you can say ok a Friday guitar, but 2 Friday guitars hmmm. My Baritone SE was ok, but they arent well built compared to my Mex Fender Strat and my Chiness Epiphone. J45. 😪😪. I have to ask you if in your eyes the DGT SE is good are you competent in judging. Have you worked with a Luthier, have you been involved with a start to finish build or only production guitars. You may know some about the guitars you have experienced, but that does that necessarily make your baseline good. This is not a criticism, they are questions. You are a great guitarist no question. For me I have met many guitarist who really know little about guitar build, luthier and making the guitar fit the person. Maybe make a great video talking with luthiers and your knowledge. Everyone says Silver sky is best bang for the money. You can try some Fenders but they are hit and miss. I have an Am Pro 2 and I'm not really in love with it... Thinking of selling it and buying DGT SE

@@emdblues I heard that the silver sky doesn't have that iconic strat sound. And I want that twang

@@idontgrillonwed Man I've heard some good good things about the Revstar tho, stainless steel frets, excellent craftsmanship, comfy neck and it's cheaper too. But the PRS has more character in my opinion

I have both and it depends what you want. Similar guitars in some respects but the trem is great and the spilt coil is something I like and use, so the DGT is a favourite. BUT love the Revstar (mine has p90s). Wouldn’t sell either..

@@steved1099 which one feels better in terms of playability or build quality ?
@steved1099
@steved1099 Ай бұрын
@anurupguhathakurta2913 both have very very good playability. The shorter scale on both means they both are excellent for string bending. I have strats and les Paul's too and the revstar and DGT SE for me are easier to play. Build quality, both excellent, possibly the revstar feels slightly more premium. I also have a CU24 SE and the DGT SE is miles better quality wise. I love both and if I could only have one, the DGT has trem and split coil which I need. But if I didn't need trem then the revstar is all the guitar I would need. I will never spend 2-3k on a guitar again now..... such is the playability and tone of these 2. Buck and mancuso prove the revstar is a pro level guitar and dave grissom used the DGT SE for 3 months solid to prove it was a touring level guitar. Get both and return 1 within 14 days 😅😅. Good luck deciding

honestly this guitar represents a sea change in mass produced guitars. in 20 years, the industry is going to look back and see this guitar as the instrument that changed the expectations for a quality instrument.

There is no best. You have a budget and one guitar or brand appeals to you, you identify with it and you buy it. . All guitars at that price level are going to be good. Yes there are lemons - that happens with high level stuff. You could call your money "good value for money" in the 1000 price range.

I would say that pretty much any Japanese guitar that you can find under 1000 pounds (and usually you can find deals on many) is better than this guitar. Just my 2c.
