My friend climbed to legend during Karazhan by playing a priest deck that was designed to do nothing but to counter shamans. The deck would lose horribly to any other deck, but the ladder was simply so infested with shaman that he made it to legend.

Man, as much as I had more fun in Ben Brode era Hearthstone, the balancing was hyper questionable. The "Find it yourself" nerfing philosophy was so stupid, their actual nerfing was stupid too as we've seen with Warsong. But it also seemed to apply to weak classes as well, as seen with the laughing stock that was "Unicorn Priest". Essentially Priest was so bad, but it was apparently the players fault for not experimenting with their bad cards, not the fact that people were practically throwing stones at "Purify" being revealed, or the fact Priest hadn't had a single Tier 1 deck until Highlander Raza Priest. People made out that Raza Priest was the devil back then, but it really doesn't even lay a finger on what decks like these felt like to play against.

I didn't play HS enough when DH was broken to know how bad it was. But I can safely say jade druid and pirate warrior at their peaks(KOFT and MSOG) were more oppressive at mid ranks than either huntertaker or midrange shaman. The new poison thief rogue will go down as one of hearthstones most oppressive decks. With a playrate of over 50% at top legend, it is no question that it is a contender for one of the most powerful decks ever crafted for standard. Edit: I do agree though that demon hunter was way WAY overtuned. I think though it was the only deck that was overpowered on purpose. Blizzard wanted everyone to want to play the new class so they had to overtune it to spark interest.

Pirate Warrior overcomes Undertake Hunter and Overload Shaman, because it was the most noxious/harmful/prejudicial deck on the whole Hearthstone history. Undertake was at the beginning of the game and was nerfed fast, Overload was really frustrated ("4 mana 7/7!" and "1 mana creature buffed every card played"), but Pirate Warrior totally defined the meta for half a year, maybe more. It was so oppressive and easy to manage that only two other decks survived during this period: Jade Druid and Renolock, and even them had to be luck to hold the pirates before stabilize the board, if you played with Jade, or Reno comes and be played on turn 6. Was the worst Ranked queue that I played by far in any game that I played during my life. AND Blizzard didn't nerfed anything "based on win rate", but probably they used number from all ranks and also they wasn't watching their own Championships that was super boring because all players were using the same decks. At the end of the cicle, Dragon Priest emerged, but talking as a person who played with it and reached rank 1, this deck was dependent of luck too to hold pirates... but used to loose like 70% to Jade and almost 100% to Reno... yes I remember that I celebrate the only win against this deck, like 20 minutes match, after that I lost in 1 minute and 20 seconds for someone with Pirate Warrior.

In Wild, the Giantlock with Naga Sea Witch and Giant Mage (using Book of Specters) were the first decks that made a WILD card get nerfed (NSW: 5 -> 8 (!) mana ). It could obliterate you by turn 5 by a Naga + 6 giants for 53 DMG. The only 2 counter cards were Poison Seeds and Frost Nova + Doomsayer. And if you survived, you were still quite unlikely to win... Rank 13 to legend in one afternoon with Giant Mage feels pretty on par with pre-nerf DH.

Big nostalgia hit as an old hearthstone player. So it had a >50% winrate against literally every deck for a patch or two before getting hotfix nerfed, where it then stayed as a tier one deck. Jade druid was a very good example of a deck being not the most powerful (decks faster than it would consistently beat it), but one of the most oppressive decks the game had ever seen as it almost completely boxed out any control deck. I genuinely find that to be worse than if it was just overpowered. However, I believe the strongest example of that was the orginal quest rogue. That deck literally stopped ANY deck that was slower than it, which back then, could be won in literally 4 turns. Thats when i quit for good.

i'd consider patron warrior as a close second to the daemonhunter deck, the problem with patron warrior was it was just so hard to pilot that even the top patron players missed lethal 1-2 turns earlier in competitive tournaments. (which they had prepared for extensively) but with the everchanging maths you had to do depending on the enemy board, it was hard to make decisions in the timespan you were given per turn. an armor warrior deck with a really easy boardfill and clear was so dominant, but arguably one of the hardest tier1(or tier0) decks to pilot.

Deck recived huge "indirect buff" later, by nerfing _Call to Arms_ from 4 to 5-mana spell, so for you was much easier clear up your deck from 1 cost cards. To top up all, deck was cheap, only Baku and Leroy needed. _Year of the Raven_ was more like _Year of the Pain_ tbh.

Original Pirate Warrior was definitely among the top 3 oppressive for me. If you ran weapon removal explicitly to counter them, you'd be potentially sustainable but not nearly out of the woods. The nerfed Small-Time Bucaneer(?) 1 mana 1/1 which used to be 1/2 paired with N'Zoth's First Mate alongside Patches on the first 2 turns just sucked all the joy out of my being like a Harry Potter dementor. I'd be constantly asking how the heck did they deal nearly 20 damage by turn 4 or just be dead by turn 5 despite all my efforts and counters
@chrisdaley28522 жыл бұрын
The only deck I remember seeing having a positive winrate against OG Pirate Warrior was Reno Mage which ran Ice Block to not die on turn 5 and weapon removal. And it was close enough to call a 50/50 even though you would play it exclusively to beat Pirates. Plus Pirate Warrior survived a full expansion in that state unlike other similarly strong decks. That deck will always be king in my mind. Shamanstone was probably longer but involved a string of a few different decks like Totem, Midrange and Aggro. I played both metas and Pirates felt more unbeatable to me.

@@WitchHunterRobin Nope, not until Knights of the Frozen Throne when Spreading Plague, Malfurion and UI were released. During Meanstreets, Jade Druid was just a control/fatigue bullying deck that lost horribly to aggro. The strength of Pirate Warrior almost came more in the fact that there were very few powerful control tools in the Meanstreets meta. They corrected that somewhat in Un'goro. But Jade Druid was a garbage deck for those 2 sets. By the time Jade Druid had shot to power, Pirate Warrior had gone through a round of nerfs and had one of the nastiest targeted hate cards printed to kill it, namely Golakka Crawler.

I think you've ignored Quest Rogue on this list. One measure of best deck of all time is how hard it warped the format around itself. In my opinion, no single format has been so dominated by the gravitational pull of any deck as Standard was at multiple different times by Quest Rogue. Not only did the card itself see multiple rounds of nerfs, key cards in the deck, like Giggling Inventor, also got nerfed in response to how they were played in Quest Rogue.
@ZergrushEddie2 жыл бұрын
I think that comes down to differing opinions. Quest Rogue had an abysmal match up against Aggro decks and a LOT of people were playing Aggro. With all that Aggro about, Control Warlock should've been number one but Quest Rogue pushed out every Control deck. Similar thing with Raza Priest during Kobold and Catacombs. After Raza nerf, Cube Warlock was more powerful than Raza Priest ever was but Cube was nearly unplayable with all those Priests out there before. Which deck is better: the one that dominates with an absurd winrate, or the one that warps the entire format by simply existing? Certainly seems like a good topic for a video: most oppressive decks/match ups of all time. :)

Loving the new videos!!! You should do one with Cardle, it's like Wordle but for HS cards, lots of fun, it would be great to test your knowledge :).

If this video is about standard only, then it's a very good video. In my opinion the most powerful deck I had to play against was raza priest in wild and as of now it's quest Baku hunter.

No honorable mentions for that one mage deck? I don't remember what it was called but it had basically only spells and you could reduce the cost of all of them

I’m a little shocked to not see the classic FoN Savage Roar deck on this list because Iksar said in an AMA that it had the highest win rate of all time- 61%.

Quest rogue with giggeling inventor was my nemesis. It was an absurd deck

I know that this seems to be standard decks but Demon Seed Warlock was crazy. So much so it got the second ever ban in Hearthstone history

Well, we are less than a month away from getting the death knight class in HS, and it already scares me

I kind of liked playing Nax's Deathrattle Hunter and Mid-Range Shaman. I quit playing a week after Demon Hunter was introduced so have no idea what happened after that. I think other decks that were powerful during that time was Grim Patron Warrior (that deck was killer but was hard to play). Secret Paladin was so easy to play anyone could climb with it and was good. And Savage Roar druid back in vanilla was really good and Jade Druid was beyond painful to play against.

In terms of just raw brokenness, I'd say (in wild) soulslock, tiller priest (although I didn't play during that meta) and, recently, kael'thas druid. Pre-nerf boar priest is another hot contender, but as far as I know it wasn't as consistent as the others, and had a real chance of losing to aggro if the draws weren't good.

I’m expecting to see quest mage before the nerf in here. Got me to legend for my first time lol

Honestly I wish there was an honorable mention for Star Aligner Druid. It may have only been strong in wild when it came out but it was an interesting combo to see considering how little play the card would see after they nerfed the deck.

I remember making the original star aligner combo deck thread on hearthpwn. Still has like 43k views. I was called a goober for saying it was broken.

Damn the feels. Although i kind of liked the old philosophy of devs in the sense it showed creativity and some decks were created just to counter these decks ( not demon hunter, nurferd too quickly )

Star alligner druid forsure. I climbed to legend from rank 10 in less than 5 hours. Insane game

The worst thing about mid range shaman was, that it was already one of the strongest decks pre kharazan and everybody waited for the expansion to reset the meta, but they just buffed the deck. For over half a year this was by far the most dominant deck in the meta.

I still have nightmares from facing Secret Paladin during it's prime. Also Raza Priest and Patron warrior were very opressive for a while.

Yes secret paladin was insane in its prime, it feels weird that not many people remember this deck. Maybe the memories were too traumatizing.

patron warrior was sick when it came out also

Its quest Mage for me. Where we get an extra turn and destroy the opponent with infinite 0 cost fireballs. Man i miss the days that i was jamming this.

my brother had a beta key to hearthstone and I stopped playing maybe 2 years ago. Imo deathrattle hunter AKA undertaker hunter was the best deck off all time if the qualification is best deck at climbing ranked ever. These vids are really cool I kind of feel old watching them lmao. Also is ben brode not the creative leader behind the game? He was a very loved character and I've noticed a resurgence in hearthstone lately, so that's interesting.

As soon as i clicked this i called the naxx hunter i remember reaching legend 4 in under 12 hours of the season start and keep in mind this was when your rank full reset each month. In my opinion playing since beta this is the strongest deck for any individual time in hs
@Attilailduro942 жыл бұрын
as an former player that did not see the new class be implemented, I thought the top spot would be taken by secret paladin
@Domna72 жыл бұрын
Agree with you about the Demon hunter Openess at start, but it would be interesting to imagine who would if we make all the broken deck, fare against each other. Imo Star aligner Druid could be the winner.

I was thinking whether Evolve Shaman (a deck that made everyone run Kobold Stickyfingers :D ) would make it or not... guess it wasn't as broken as those decks :) (I was on "hiatus" during this time) Great history vid, thank you :)

I had like 26-0 with much later version of Mid range/aggro DH and I can share a list if someone wants to see. Maybe I have my stats saved on hsreplay.

Pirate Warrior began in Gadgetzan and didn't stop until Patches was nerfed mid-Kobolds and Catacombs, over two years later. In Gadgetzan, it wasn't just the best deck in the game; it had the highest overall winrate in the entire history of Hearthstone. It was either Tier 1 or Tier 2 the entire two years, surviving half a dozen nerfs and several tech cards printed specifically to fight it. It's not only the longest-lasting deck eith the least changes next to Control Warrior, it was also consistently among the strongest, and by far the easiest to play. It's literally the deck that caused Blizzard to change their attitude about nerfs. I'm a little flabbergasted that it's not mentioned in this video

2:46 This is something kinda true. I usally try to find couners to the meta by myself. Right now i am not feeling the meta is so Toxic overall because i'm playng off meta Decks, like Big Warrior, which can got a lot of armor and removals against Rogues. But not all people like this play style. But i wish tehy could test the cards before lauching them breaking the game.
