I limit myself to a strict 27.6214 oz of gear when I hike. By removing the protective coating from my knife, the thumb stud and the pocket clip, it gives me that extra .0014 oz I need so I can also take a breath mint with me.

3:56 the corkscrew: also DC do not forget the added benefit that it takes the Fireant micro-ferro rod! I've seen a video in which Felix Immler uses the Fireant with the helix tinders that one can get for it and he lit over 100 fires with it before it finally reached its end. All that at close to zero added weight or volume. Originally, I poo-pooed it as a trinket till I saw Felix's video. That guy is a legend! For me, hiking is almost synonymous with an SAK! It's just a no-brainer. I carry mine on a lanyard fitted with a simple spring snap hook for greatest simplicity. It hangs on my belt above the pocket of my trousers/jeans with the knife dangling inside. simplicity itself and very easy to get access to. I must say that Camper model is appealing but I've had the 4 layer SAK (Tinkerer? Can't remember the name, I've had it so long!).

No one asked but I love the corkscrew and the his are just some things that you can do it with it. 1. Opens corked bottles (duh!) 2. Untie knots. 3. Pry the battery out of a cell phone. 4. Screw it into a wall and hang your coat on the SAK. 5. Staple remover. 6. Smooth out the hole you just made with the reamer. 7. Clear clogged faucet sprayer. 8. Bicycle tire valve tool. 9. Holds the micro screwdriver. 10. Pick gravel out of tires. 11. Rip open a blister package. 12. Ice pick. 13. Mark a pilot hole. 14. Clean mud out of shoe soles. 15. Knot the end of a cord. Thread it through the corkscrew. Handle. 16. Pop balloons. 17. Aides in sewing. 18. Clean mud out of sprinkler heads. 19. Push used snare wire through it, to straighten out the wire and remove coils or kinks. 20. Pulls the drain plug out of a tub. 21. Open the corkscrew and screw it tightly into a broomstick-thickness stick. Now open the blade. Tie it securely. Survival spear for fishing. 22. Hang the SAK from a piece of cordage from the ceiling. Plumb bob (I have the middle of the handle marked on one mine). 23. Corkscrew + a metal lid = a filter or wire mesh for cooking. 24. Carry a chunk of C4. 25. Pull frozen shoestrings tight, or help loosen them. 26. Helps get the innards out of a squirrel. 27. Gets the candle stub out of a candle holder. 28. Start fights on multitool forums. 29. Remove the fuel filter from a lawn mower. 30. Although the new corkscrews are 4 turns, you can use them for range estimation. 31. O-ring remover for your flashlights. 32. Pry out partially-exposed nails. 33. Tighten the apron strings on a wrestling ring. 34. The inside diameter of the corkscrew is 1/4". I'm sure you know what you can do with this. 35. Open just a small hole in a coconut. 36. Lift stuck items out of boxes. 37. Fish the tape out of a clogged VHS tape. 38. Remove patches from a flintlock gun. 39. Remove the inside of a shotgun shell, making a blank. Remove the wad and powder too. 40. If you don't want the mini screwdriver, the corkscrew can hold a ferro rod. 41. Tap a tree for sap. 42. Undo zip ties without breaking them. ✌️😉

The problem hiking with an Opinel is the wood handle. I took one backpacking once. If you get high humidity or moisture, the wood can swell, making it all but impossible to fold open until it dries out. Great picnic knife, don't get me wrong! But not my choice when I need something more dependable in weather.
@Bezstopy3 жыл бұрын
I use Opinels a lot, if swollen just use bit more force to open theres nothing in the way just pressing sides near pivot. Its tiny knife but not perfect, sometimes it gets stiff sometimes loose, one opened lock in backpack and sliced few things :)) and I dont agree (with D.A.) with no hotspots on no.8 theres huge one at the back. Its great ultralight great slicing knife .. and you dont mind breaking/loosing it if situation rises.
@traviswrigg51583 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've definitely been places humid enough that I wound up carving an easy open notch into the opinel and still ended up soaking the handle in oil and shrinking it in the oven to try to get it to stop jamming up in humidity. Overall, I'd say "Just spend a little extra and take a mild weight penalty for a knife that's better at being a folding knife"
@maxwellmortimermontoure72742 жыл бұрын

Great job. Always enjoy hearing the rationales behind each of his picks! The one thought that came to my mind with David's comments involving both the Spyderco and Benchmade choices was the different types of hiking. I fully agree with his preference for going full size when hiking in mountains, backpacking, or really long hikes. However, when I'm simply hiking a trail near where I live or in very lightweight hiking shorts [summer months], I would opt to carry my mini Bugout. Less "bouncy" in my pocket and less noticeable.

Whenever someone tells me a hidden or stub tang are not very strong I just tell them that they must think Katana swords are weak. Mora is a hidden tang as you can buy just the blades without handles or guards and make your own. I bought one back in the 70s to take backpacking up in the Sierra before it got crowded. The scouts can be tough on knives and ive seen scouts carry some cheap crappy knives especially the young ones. One tip bright handle colors can help keep the knife from being lost if it gets dropped on the ground by accident.

I can endorse Kabar's Dozier folder. It's very lightweight and its lockback is secure and confidence inspiring. another I could suggest is the Kershaw Skyline... I lost it one time in my backyard and found it a week after (this is during spring so lots of rain) and I found very very minimum rust. It's lightweight. and I even used it to break open a car window to rescue someone out. The G10 handle is no joke.

I don't worry about weight. My outdoor knife is a Benchmade Nimravus. Got it from you, too.

The best neck knife created up until the present is the Enryo from Spartan. S35vn and this knife can go through anything and holds an edge.

A great video again David. I would also suggest Victorinox pioneerr, Cold Steel Code4, CRKT Outrage and Victorinox 111mm Swiss Soldier knif. Best regards Monty Momcilovic

pro tip for the SAK: replace the toothpick with a tortoise firefly firesteel! It's a mini firesteel that is specificaly made to replace the toothpick on a SAK.

How about the Fallkniven WM1. Not sure how much the sheath weighs but the knife itself is very light.

A friend of mine who is really into trekking and hiking swear by the lionsteel m1, he says that the thing is awesome to have in the trek and basically indestructible. I have the lionsteel m4 so I'm thinking about it, too bad for the price though 160 euros is a lot of money for a small knife.

It is a good selection. I'm carrying my Izula I during the last weeks, I removed the coating because I use it for food prep. Good little and sturdy knife, I appreciate the fact it is easily concealable, In my country many people are scared of knives. I have a question about the becker BK11, the handle is 4 fingers grip for a medium size hands?. Thank you!.

What knives are out there with a double dagger blade, one straight edge, one serrated edge, like the old SOG Pentagon fixed blades made in Seki? Can I find this type of blade in a auto folder that also has a glass breaker? I checked the Protech and Microtech lineup, but could not find what I was looking for.
