Fun factoid: QM2 carries one of the whistles from the original Queen Mary; I believe it's on the starboard/right side of the funnel. Supposedly the sound is meant to be audible 15km from the ship.

The QM2's is certainly impressive, but THE most impressive ship's horn I have ever heard was that of the SS France, as it was in 1968. The deepest bass-baritone, commanding awe and wonder, with lengthy reverberations among the towers of Manhattan (for back then, passenger liners still docked along the Hudson River side of Manhattan). A pity such a beautiful ship suffered such an ignominious end as the SS France.

Of interest the horn as people are calling it, is actually call the ships whistle. I travelled on the QM2 in December 2017 and Captain in his daily noon address always referred to the sounding of the ships whistle!

m341ehw: That’s correct. The original whistle is fitted on the starboard side of the QM2 funnel. The QM2 whistles are called ‘Typhoon’ whistles and can be heard from a distance of 10 miles away!

It is in fact a pneumatic horn that can operate on not only air but steam as well. The only reason it is referred to as a whistle is because before horns, they only had whistles. So keeping to tradition, they just call it a whistle. Same thing with trains.

Queen Mary II whistle is off her predecessor the original Queen Mary. The totally restored them and placed them on the QM 2.

It has some extremely powerful bow thrusters and 4 pods that weigh about the same as a Jumbo jet. 2 of the pods are fixed but the other 2 can rotate which is how it can move around almost seamlessly.

The other big difference is her life boats, a cruise ship will store them on deck 3 or 4 QM2 stores here on deck 8..... again out of the way of waves. Very stable to sail in using that bow to cut through the waves...... she also won't fit into a lot of smaller ports due to her large draught (depth) making tenders rides more common on a cruise.
