The original version of Resident Evil hasn't held up, but Resident Evil 2 and 3: Nemesis most certainly _do._ These two games made me a horror fan, and they honestly still hold up, warts and all. Sure to an outsider looking in, the tank controls seem ridiculous, but in the context of the fixed camera angles and deliberate pace the games go for, they work like a charm. And the Resident Evil 1 Remake is honestly even better.

I play all three again recently and they're all so great but, as you say, the original is a little ropier nowadays. It's remake, though, is probably the best survival horror game ever made, cannot get enough of it.

Love this! Before I became a Halo fan, and before I started making Halo LASO walkthroughs, I was a Resident Evil addict. I used to speedrun the OG RE3 on the hardest setting on a daily basis just for fun. My best time was one hour and 26 minutes. This was before the days of KZbin. I sense a theme here. You love the Flood from Halo. You love Resident Evil. If you haven’t already looked into it, you might enjoy exploring the Scourge from Warcraft, an undead army that draws some comparisons to the Flood. Would be really interested in hearing your take! Always enjoy your videos, and thank you for all of your hard work 🙂

No worries dude, thanks for watching! Speedrunning Resi 3 is bold, that game is so, so random! 1:26 is way beyond anything I'd ever be able to do, seriously solid time. I don't tons about Warcraft but I'll have a read too!

RE3 is my favorite. Close as second as my favorite of all time. I replay it several times per year and I'm still enjoying it. I'm happy that they release those PC ports but sadly they are bare bones. Or I can say it about the first because it's the only one released by now. Try to change the keybinds and you know what I mean. They should have made these the definitive editions not square one.

Don't expect much from GOG's RE2 and RE3 Nemesis releases. These are just the original pc ports only made to work on modern pcs using a wrapper. It's up to you to install patches/mods to actually "remaster" them. As far as I can tell, there wasn't any additional content for pc RE2 and RE3 Nemesis. RE3 Nemesis has the extra Jill costumes and Mercenaries mode unlocked from the get go. It seems the GameCube ports of RE2 and RE3 Nemesis are considered the best ones, especially if you use the fan made HD Remaster mods on a GameCube emulator. But yeah, the RE classic Trilogy deserves better than this and should've gotten actually remastered like the original PS1 Tomb Raider Trilogy. Got a bad feeling a barebones GOG pc release is how we're going to get Dino Crisis 1&2 too. Both did have pc ports, but I don't think anything was added to them.
@BenPlaysGames3 ай бұрын
The real way to play them is getting the Sourcenext versions and then updating them using the Classic Rebirth patches. Gives you tons of options and by far the best way to play the older titles.

Not really a trilogy. CODE: Veronica and Zero exist, are main entries, and add on to the story that those three titles were establishing. So really, that first era of the series before Resident Evil 4 soft-rebooted the series was more of a pentalogy than anything.

Wanted these excellent games to receive the same remaster treatment Aspyr gave Tomb Raider Trilogy. That's not what we got at all here on GOG. Hoping we 1 day actually get legit remasters for both current consoles and pc, especially if all 3 RE games are sold in one collection and include extra content from versions like Director's Cut, Sega Saturn, or Deadly Silence DS.
@BenPlaysGames3 ай бұрын
I think Capcom will forever remain content just spaffing out low effort ports, as they have done for the last nearly 30 years. Shame really, but nothing surprising at this point, I suppose.

This re-release is a situation done right. My late production PS3 is still alive and kicking, but I don't look forward to the day it craps out and I lose my og RE + GTA trilogies, possibly others... not sure how many more of my classic title downloads are inaccessible in official forms 😢

The first Resident Evil on PS1 was one of my favourite games as a kid & still today, I replayed that original trilogy more times than I can count. The remakes are great & I'm happy they were made, but there's still a special quality the classic versions possess. RE1 remake is the best of both worlds. Updated graphics & enhanced atmosphere while retaining that old school fixed camera/tank control gameplay. For me that's the best of the entire series. Thanks for the quality content Ben & have a great day.

I wish we got remakes for RE2 and especially RE3 Nemesis like RE1 Remake back then. Or at least Nintendo DS ports of RE2 and RE3 Nemesis. RE Deadly Silence is likely the best version of the original RE1. I can't believe critics hated it.

Pleasure's all mine mate! I couldn't pick between 2, 3 and REmake for my favourite, they're all amazing in different ways. REmake probably the best survival horror game ever made, if I was doing my best to be objective. What I'd give for a remake of 2 and 3 in the same style...

@Gruntvc3 ай бұрын
The B scenarios in RE2 Remake were rushed and added late in development. Still liked the game. Can't say the same for RE3 Failmake 2020. They didn't even try to remake the original game.

They didn't even need to do A/B in different orders with both characters. Just do two separate campaigns, one for each character, which overlap each other at certain points. Claire gets the Birkin/Sherry side and Leon gets the Mr X/Ada side. Job done!
@burge1172 ай бұрын
@BenPlaysGames That is so true, Ben. Two campaigns, actually different enough from each other and actually match up with what the other person would be doing. Plus some actual interactions. Honestly, there is barely any difference really between AB/BA.

I'm happy with the existing remake of the original but Code Veronica is prime for a remake. Its graphics have aged poorly and its pacing could use quite a bit of work (there's so much backtracking).
@JG004-kk1do3 ай бұрын
@@BenPlaysGames CV’s graphics haven’t aged that poorly. Yeah they don’t look as good compared to the other OG games but that was due to the 3D environments and dynamic camera it used. Other than some design flaws like you mentioned, the only thing holding that game back is the tank controls (specifically movement) as the camera it used wasn’t designed for them. I do think they’ll remake most of the games up to 6 though.
@BenPlaysGames3 ай бұрын
@@JG004-kk1do I think the series wasn't quite ready for the 3D environments as a lot of the personality the older games' had was lost in the process. Everything was a little too sparse due to added detail needing extra horsepower, compared to say REmake which looked spectacular and released around the same time. Loved the camera angles, though, it was something I'd wanted ever since I'd played the alley scene at the start of the first Silent Hill.
@JG004-kk1do3 ай бұрын
@@BenPlaysGames Yeah the environments do look muted compared to the pre rendered ones but I’m pretty sure they switched to 3D for gameplay purposes and because the Dreamcast was powerful enough to handle them. If you look at 1r and 0 they used 2D backgrounds due to the GameCube’s hardware while outbreak and some other spin offs used 3D as the PS2 was more powerful. The GameCube RE’s graphics did age very well but the outbreak games improved a lot on the moment to moment gameplay of the OG style while retaining most of it’s personality.

I haven't played Resident Evil in 10 years, but have very distinct memories of it. Around 5-8 years old I'd have been playing it, and I had nightmares, every.... SINGLE... NIGHT! Legitimately like a week or two straight until eventually my parents had taken it and put it in the cabinet top shelf in our kitchen. It's so vivid, I remember that I was in like a zoo, or some large place where animals would walk through. Zombie dogs tigers and stuff, elephants I think as well. Never got too far before quitting. I wish I could say which one it was, it was on Playstation 2, I just remember the cover had like a purple disgusting eyeball with surrounding skin zombie looking, and the aforementioned animals in like a zoo or something. I know we must still have it and I have to search bins, and for now I'd appreciate knowing its name if someone does, ha. Also could be misremembering exact details And Ben, could you cover Amnesia the Dark Decent perhaps, and by extension Frictional Games' former franchise Penumbra. Your coverage of this genre is very good, and they would equally make for great entertainment here

As another commenter says, that's Outbreak File 2. It and its predecessor are cracking games but they're a little unwieldy in the present and I'd love them both to get a modern reimagining. Thanks for the kind words and the suggestion too! I was actually talking on stream last night about doing a horror game live next, with the intention of recording footage at the same time for a video after. I think I might do the The Dark Descent, as I've wanted to write about it ever since I first played it.
