Mark, thank you. This is my current focus area with my coach. Focus items: more on my heels, hesitate at top of back swing, start swing w hips - bump and then turn, hit the inside of the ball. It’s helping. Your drills focus on smaller elements of this and may help me more w feel. Thanx!

When I was a child, my dad splurged for tickets for us to go to the us open at Oakland hills. I think it was 84, not certain. Johnny Miller was on the driving range. He was doing a drill with his 7 iron. He was hitting one handed, his left. He was stroking it about 150 pure contact. It was a show off move for sure, but the fans loved it. This vid reminded me of that, thx mark.

Just had a round littered with poor iron strikes this morning, so very much top mind for me at the moment! I'm fascinated by your takeaway practices before you hit Mark, would love to see some videos on that as I feel that my bad iron shots start out a bit iffy in the takeaway and get progressively worse as I compensate for that!

Been working on this through the winter, my biggest issue is sweeping the ball, with almost a flip of the club. Once I picked up a Mevo launch monitor, I was surprised at how much of a distance killer that really was! I’ve worked on keeping more shaft lean but to the detriment of your last example and trying to “stay down”. Definitely some helpful drills I’ll try! Thanks for the great content.

Had a lesson (Honiton) and been using your drills. My ball striking is so much better. Still a way to go but happy with progress (was 11-12 when stopped in 2013, 3 weeks ago shot 100, yesterday 88), find I’m missing left a lot. Not sure if grip or alignment or a combination of several things. I watched your grip tips so I’ll incorporate that and keep working on the drills and keep you informed. FYI I’m 59 and target is single figures before I hit 60.

Thanks so much for this! I'm usually good with irons, but just in the last year I tend to "dump off" my wrist angles at release and hit something that resembles a shank and it happens at the most awkward times! I think working on this will be a start to getting the problem resolved! If you have other suggestions in this area I would definitely be interested! I think drill number 2 might really help, especially!

Half Way Ray. I DO struggle with my iron shots! Just like you demonstrated, Mark: I move my hips laterally and try to shallow by tipping my shoulders back, then I EE like crazy. I've used stuff from your videos along with online lessons from Monte Sheinblum and (post vaccine) in person lessons from Carl Sealman to combat it. I've made some headway. It still creeps in and I can overcompensate as well, but I absolutely *pured* three 2i shots today; including two off the deck into Par 5s that set up eagle looks. I thought my 2i (literally the original Lockey Lumpy Callaway X Proto 18*) was a thing of my past. Now it is my 230 carry club again!

Great ideas to try. I’ve been struggling to get my hips more active since my back injury. It’s like my brain is trying to protect me even when I feel good. So I can’t wait to try these drills to retrain my brain to let my body do what it needs to do

Mark, another really helpful video, thanks. I’m trying to work on shallowing my downswing with my irons, and I’m struggling with the transition from backswing to downswing, which is causing issues with my hips as I’ve started sliding them to the left rather than rotating. Any tips would be gratefully received.

Seconding the mind reader comment. Completely lost my shape in the last lockdown and have been working on the range for the last fortnight to try to rediscover my strike. It has been a nightmare and I've only risked one proper round so far - and my iron play was mixed at best. You've just given me my range drills for tomorrow. Cheers, Mark lad.

This was very helpful. Been working on getting my hips much more open at impact, so for the most part I've found that doing 1/2 shots helped the most, i.e. left arm parallel to the ground on my back swing. It's the " jumping up " that I have the most problems with, maybe due to my twisted and curved spine, not sure, but I'll keep trying.

Half way ray - I’ve found that a non-drill tip that helps me move low point forward is simply flaring out the lead foot a good amount. Helps with easing the hip turn especially for yours truly with a bad back who doesn’t dare launch/jump as an intention.
@StockholmNorra3 жыл бұрын
Omg Mark. I have struggle with gliding hip movment for years and its ok the days i have the timing to flipp my hands at the right time. Hopefully this is the tool that i can remove the gliding hip from my golf swing. My Strokes Gained for the approach shots is realy bad, losing 4,22 shots every round.

Your best ever Dude ( probably as it is very relevant to me :-)) Can I ask a specific question though- On good lies and even practice range mats I never really have an issue with regard to low point- my poor shots always seem to start with a poor fairway lie ( rather than rough even). So surely it comes to be a confidence thing, which leads me to want to know are there irons that have better turf interaction especially for lower swing speed golfers like me.

Great set of drills Mark,. why can’t more coaches make things as simple as your videos? Low point at this time is definitely an issue, however I also feel that I’m leaving a lot of power on the table on the follow through, probably guilty of hitting at the ball rather through to target.

I only seem to have trouble fatting partial swing shots; the movement and momentum of a full swing seems to induce proper transition. Is this just a matter of practice for me to get better strikes on partial shots when the club doesn't have speed?

Being an ex shoulder hitter I feel that every time someone says to rotate in the swing it should come with a big warning label about the shoulders and making sure not to over rotate the upper body. What helped me stop duffing was focusing on the hip movement in backswing. Having the feeling i draw a short line forwards with me bum. No more half way Ray 😁
