Appreciate your level headed and insightful ranking video. I differ in my ranking but that's like ranking the greatest art in the world, we are all going to interpret the work slightly differently and that's fine. Let's see. Kate is a singer, songwriter, composer, musician, dancer, choreographer, producer, director, filmmaker, mother and an amazing human being. I can't really think of another artist who has accomplished what she has in the path she has taken. There will never be another artist like her and we are privileged to have been alive at the same time that she created her work. The older I become, the more I respect Kate's work and output. Each time I listen to her work and watch her videos, new subtleties are revealed, even after dozens and even hundreds of listens, which is a sign of artistic greatness. Most music I get bored with after obsessing over it but with Kate's work, it seems like it's always been a part of my life even though I didn't discover Kate until 1985 with HOL. Her body of work is a journey and an enigmatic puzzle that never fails to fascinate and engage me. Thank you Kate.

I would've chosen The Sensual World as number one. There's not a weak spot on that album, especially the two stand out songs, both with David Gilmour on guitar, that being Love & Anger and Rocket's Tail. Both are harder rock than what she usually does but totally killer. Totally bombastic and in-your-face songs. I really dig the Bulgarian singers too. JMHO

I agree. The Sensual World is an album that I didn't pay much attention to initially, as I was enamored with the mystique of Hounds of Love and the unapologetic eccentricity of The Dreaming. But I finally payed attention to The Sensual World and it became my favorite album of hers.

@@SuperPhunThyme100 I also didn't pay much attention, and for the exact same reasons. I just pulled out my copy and am listening as I write. I agree with Mr. Maslov though about his selection of his personal numbers one and two. Those, to me, are 'deserted island' material, and I'd also agree that The Dreaming is in my top 50 prog albums of all time.

I have The Dreaming as my top choice, with The Sensual World a close second. Both are in my forever collection; they are absolutely masterful recordings. The Dreaming was so original when it was released it was not a commercial success, as it was a far departure from what her fans had come to expect. However, it was (is) the most meaningful album to me, just as TSW and her other albums are to others. I completely agree with your comment regarding those songs, as well as the Trio Bulgarka and David Gilmore contributions.

I have watched this video twice, the reason? It’s just so good and honest. I have been a Kate Bush fan since I first saw her on TV in the 70’s, for me she is the female David Bowie, don’t ever think you know what the next album will sound like. I don’t really have a chart of my favourites, they come and go, but Aerial is pretty much perfection particularly the second disc, I remember listening to the Kick Inside for the first, I had never heard anything like it, so that’s always high in my liking. Thanks again for such a great overview of the great Kate Bush. ⚡️

Enjoyed this, thank you - so in January 1978, was going home from school, my bus stop was directly outside the Our Price Record shop on New Oxford Street (a mile up the road form the HMV shop you went to), music blaring out as always...was staring at the shop window, they were heavily pushing 'Abba - The Album' and Ian Drurys 'New Boots and Panties' and then those opening piano chords hit my ears and then, that voice...my life changed...went inside the shop for a better listen, asked the girl at the till who it was, begged her to play it again ( I was a cheeky kid) which she was glad to do...several missed buses later that was it for me...she has been the back drop to my life...in order for me 1- The Kick Inside (Like you, just too personal), 2. The Dreaming, 3. Aerial, 4. The Sensual World, 5. Hounds of Love, 6. Lionheart, 7. 50 Words, 8, The Red Shoes and finally Never for Ever (as great an album, I think over familiarity hasn't helped here and I don't think its aged as well as her other work)...caveat here would be all her albums would be in my top 100, so coming last is far from a demeaning position...thanks for sharing

A pen pal of mine (through Girl Scouts) lived in Australia and told me all about Kate...I ordered the Kick Inside from my record store, fell in love, and was ecstatic when she broke through in the states with Hounds of Love in 1985. Hounds is a great first Kate Bush experience for people who can handle the The Ninth Wave. I end up recommending the Sensual World for my more ermmm delicate/apprehensive friends 🤣 Over the moon while I prefer her albums, The Whole Story is a beautiful compilation and I do love Experiment IV. I'm with you, the original Wuthering Heights vocal is my preference, but the new vocal is also gorgeous 💜🎶

Hi Mazzy ! Angel from France. I agree with you : 'The Dreaming' was, in a certain kind, the stepping stone of 'Hounds Of Love' and I understand your choice, surely for this reason. This was also the first time that Kate used the Fairlight CMI computer/keyboard (like his friend Peter Gabriel at the same time). The 80's - like the 70's - was a fuc....decade of creation ! But to me, Hounds Of Love (especially side B of the LP) has my favour. And I have lost count of the number of times I have listened to this album. PS : Congratulation for your videos ! Take care.

Hi Mazzy, thanks for doing this Kate Bush album ranking. I've been a fan since day one. She was big in Australia, even appearing on Countdown in 1979 performing "Hammer Horror". My #1 Is her debut LP "The Kick Inside", while "Lionheart" could in some ways be seen as a part 2 of the debut LP. Her music became more experimental, maybe not as 'popularly accessible' as her initial efforts and as time wore on her releases became less frequent, sometimes with a 2 year gap between records. I own her first 5 on LP and the CD boxed set which gave me "The Sensual World" which I should listen to again. As you said, at the behest of Dave Gilmour, EMI signed her, gave her an advance at age 15-16 and told her to go away, write songs and come back in 2 years. "Them Heavy People" on her debut acknowledges those people who were 'rolliing the ball' for her. You might be aware that in 1978 SHE came up with the idea of the technology for her tour that now allows artists such as Madonna, P!nk, Shakira, JLo, Beyonce et al, the freedom to perform the level of show that they do now. I own a 1 hour pre-recorded VHS called "On Stage" from one of those shows and accompanying 7 & 12" EP's. Kate was the first. The tour took a toll on her physically & personally, with the tragic loss of a roadie in an accident, during it. That's why there was only one tour. She has control over her destiny and her music. However 'pop fame' didn't ever sit well with her especially, in her heyday. Kate was brave enough to walk away from the spotlight for a very long time for motherhood and other things, until the release "Aerial". Then she retreated again. I was in London in 2014 when I heard that she was performing live again but, sadly for me, later that year. Kate IS an amazingly unique talent. Thank you Norman for acknowledging her. Sorry if I got long-winded. Cheers mate.

The Australian connection to the The Dreaming is the title track, which relates to the Aborigines and their wonderful "dreamtime" origin stories. Also, the album uses heavily the Fairlight CMI digital synthesiser, invented by a couple of Aussies in their garage in the 1970's. Its use in the 1980's was ubiquitous. It cost a fortune. The first users of the Farilight included Stevie Wonder and Peter Gabriel. Dare I mention Rolf Harris on didgeridoo on the title track.

can't argue with the Dreaming. it's a wonderful, adventurous record with so many high points. I actually appreciate Aerial more than Hounds of Love, personally. I think the former has a more gorgeous acoustic flavor where Hounds is more Fairlight-driven. I also have a lot of appreciation for the 1st 3 records. my least fav is Red Shoes-I think Kate is up there with Joni Mitchell in how fiercely idiosyncratic her musical vision is, and Red Shoes is too many collaborators and not enough of Kate's unique style. but no matter what, I think Kate Bush is a pop genius who deserves every bit of critical praise she's ever received. in a way, she's too good for Rock & Roll of Fame recognition.

I think some one high up in the labels in the U.S. asked Kate out on a date in the late 70's and she said no thanks so he decided to sabotage her career in the U.S. How else can you explain that cover art and her lack of radio and video play? I think the only single of hers that got played in the U.S. on TV was Cloudbusting.

If you examine what was charting in the U.S. at the times Kate's albums were released, that paints a picture of why America basically ignored her. She was and is quintessentially British. She is literate. She is a contrarian, never bowing to what was popular or charting. She made albums that appealed to her and if the world wanted to listen to them too, fine. She didn't use her sexuality to sell records, she used her amazing gifts as a composer, musician and singer. She's eccentric. Look at her cultural references, British Horror films, Bronte, Fredrick Delius, Gurdjieff, Lindsay Kemp, etc. Most American to this day are clueless about any of this, they simply don't get the references so they don't get her music. She was one of the first artists to embrace music videos as an art form, which should have made her an MTV USA darling but it never did, probably because many of her earlier music videos are pretty unusual, not filled with T&A and mugging at the camera like other females artists were doing at the time. It's a cliche but it's true, Kate was simply too sophisticated for the U.S. Market and still mostly is. The Strange Things breakthrough should be interesting to see in a year, how many Gen Zers will be true Kate Bush fanatics after Stranger Things S4 fades from the zeitgeist?

@@danbrockettDOP Well said. Also just like all lazy Americans the Gen Zs that made Running Up That Hill super popular won't spend the time to investigate any more of her music and this will be a short lived popularity spike that Kate has always deserved. My band RadioSpirit has popularity problems like Kate but on a much smaller scale. My music is super awesome but nobody ever gives it a chance because it isn't cliche and poorly written like current pop/punk/rock is. maybe my second record out next month will actually get some views! Weee!!

I found it hypocrisy that when Kate bush re released her albums she had to make all those changes. You don't fuck with art I'm so glad I also have the box set.

I am a huge KB fan but Director's Cut is awful. A rare, self-indulgent misstep for Kate. George Lucas has already proven that noodling around with classic pieces of art ad infinitum decades after they were first created becomes an exercise in futility. I can't even listen to that album because it "messes up" my favorite songs. The Sensual World - One of her best songs ever recorded. Flower of the Mountain, the remake, is terrible. Just because she finally got the James Joyce estate's permission to use some of Joyce's words from Ulysses. The lyrics Kate wrote because she couldn't get the Joyce estate's permission to use his words work so much better.

I agree. The Dreaming is the best. I would say The Kick Inside would be second, then the Hounds.

I've always loved how jarring and musically experimental The Dreaming is. It's my favorite too.

Maybe KT was never a big seller in the US because her record company wouldn't release her first several LPs here; she had a ready and willing audience but we had to go look for import LPs to get them. Some of the ones I found were Canadian, which boggles the mind, because why would an artist sell in Canada but not in the US? Turns out it was the same record company that wouldn't release the Beatles or The Move in the US at first either. Eventually they were forced to. Our radio station got a white vinyl copy of Hounds. Tragically somebody stole it. My No. 1 will always be The Dreaming, fully agree with that. Forty years on it's still ahead of its time.
