I had a guy assault me on a bus and I got my karambit out as quickly as I do in my light practice. I didn't even try to cut him but I shoved my blade against his throat wondering if I should slit it until I realized he just punched me I wasn't shot or anything. He grabbed the wrist with the karambit using both hands like he was strangling it to keep it immobile and by then he was kneeling on my legs and I was on my back partially leaning against the wall between the seats. By the time I'm on the ground he starts trying to shove my blade twords my face and he's bleeding all over me because the tip of the karambit got his neck only a inch deep but a few mm from his jugular(said the paramedics). And while I'm watching my blade slowly get closer to my face I just think to myself you know there's probably a technique for this because you have no time to feel emotion's in those kinds of instances. Suddenly I realized I could just grab my knife with my other hand. Both hands were together so I changed which finger was in the ring and then I swapped my grip and I just had the knife in the other hand. His eyes got bigger than hell and he realizes I could end him there but I just rolled over trying to hide my self under a bus seat. I just let him pound on my back with his weak punches knowing I could bring my blade back into the fight at will. I think he was really weak at that point because he got up off of me and tried to stomp on me but I just kept launching him back with my buff cyclist legs. He did manage to get one square foot to my face but it hurt less than a slap it was like he planted his foot on my face and shoved himself back. After that he left but didn't even get 2 blocks away. The only thing the police wanted from me was a statement but having a bus load of witnesses helps I'm sure.
@twentyonetortas59212 жыл бұрын
@@aaftiyoDkcdicurak What does a karambit do? Did you have only that or did you have another knife meaning you had two weapons in total? Why did you just duck and not just end him then and there? I can sorta understand why you wouldn't want to stab him due to legal stuff but if he was gassed out like that why not just incapacitate him in some way so that there won't be any opportunity for him to hit back just like he did with punching your back and pressing his foot on your face? idk if it's just me being paranoid but I feel like it isn't guaranteed that you'll be fine with just ducking as in I feel like it could've gone worse if he wasn't gassed out or didn't have weak punches and feet or if it was someone else attacking you and not him. It's nice knowing there were witnesses but did anyone do anything to help you and if no, why not? What about the driver? How can he leave? After what he did, wouldn't the driver want him kept in one place so it'll be easier to contain and arrest him? And how come he didn't even get 2 blocks away? Was he caught by the police or did you chase him? Regardless, I don't know why a guy assaulted you on the bus just like that or if he had some sorta reason but I hope he's the one that faces legal consequences and trouble and that you're good and safe. If I practice, may I ask you for fighting advice including fighting against someone who has any kind of weapon (knife, gun, sword, brass knuckle, etc.) while you don't have a weapon, fighting to prevent having your hands tied and karambit taken away from you (I still don't know how he even tied your hands. Did he have rope with him or something?), fighting to know how to get out of the situation you were in where your hands were tied and karambit was taken away, and fighting so that I will have the opportunity to end the assaulter instead of hiding under a bus seat (ngl idk if I can fit under a bus seat hence this last part)? May I ask you advice on how to fight with any kind of weapon, never lose it in the process, and knowing how to fight in case it does get lost or out of your control? It's nice knowing that you're capable of ending someone so I want to be like that or stronger, more energetic, and better even.

@@twentyonetortas5921 A karambit is a knife and no rope was involved 🤣 basically he sucker punched me then I put my blade to his neck and pushed him back with the flat of it before I realized what he actually did to me (a OTF can make you quick as wolverine) the tip still got him because karambit. When I realized he was punching me I felt like I probably didn't need to kill him. After that we started wrestling for control of the knife. That's when he was strangling my wrist with his hands to keep my knife hand immobile and shove it in my face. That's when I realized he was stronger than me and I had think of what to do while I'm using all of my might to keep my own blade out of my face and then oh hay I can just grab it with my other hand and now I can kill him at will again. Instead of bringing the blade into play again I rolled over and held my knife hand under a bus seat and used my body like a door so all he could hit was my back but I could change that if I wanted. He got up after that but came right back and that's when the kicking started. He was standing by then so I think he actually saw the police and ran. By the time I got control of my knife I was begging him to let me get my first aid kit I wanted to treat him but you can imagine his reluctance. The first thing I did when he actually ran off the bus was open my backpack and look for him because everyone rushed off the bus when the driver hit the brakes but cops and ambulance were there which probably wouldn't happen today. They took me to a local hospital I don't know where he went. everything but my underwear was covered in blood and put into evidence. They gave me some donation bin clothes recorded my statement and that was it. I was cleaning his blood out of my ears with q tips for 2 day's.

The whole "well you're not probably going to fight with a trained person" sounds like a fallacy. But unless you have a personal beef with someone you know trains, it is unlikely that someone with a rough enough life and socioeconomic status to pull a weapon on a stranger also has the free time and money to go train a bunch. Yeah you have your edge cases. You have a drunk guy who used to be special forces or something, but he's the anomaly. It's a punk who wasn't brought up right, that's the usual.

Ryan’s (and the entirety of Fit to Fight) approach for weapon defence (i.e. wrestling, clinching and striking someone with a weapon) is always a masterclass! This material is really top tier (especially the cool weird catch-wrestling wristlock after that split seatbelt takedown, I’ll experiment with that in training. Have seen Redbeard Combatives do a similar version, but with a hammerlock), and I can’t wait to get to an EoR seminar ASAP. Also-another great dude who talks a lot about fouling the draw is Kerry Murakami. He’s the owner of Rectitude Training, and he shows some pretty cool stuff to do after you get a 2-on-1, while the weapon’s in the waistband. Thank you again Mike and Ryan! Fan-fucking-tastic video as per usual.

The fact that those criminals didn't try to do anything other than keep pulling the knife like an untrained person would is interesting and sparks a thought. A lot of times people will say a particular martial art or individual move isn't great for MMA but is at least good against the untrained person, and then the typical counter-argument is that criminals are not untrained people. Violent criminals have been in lots of fights, so theoretically they should have different responses than some average person who gets into a fight over an argument, being drunk etc. I wonder if there's any data on how many people who are convicted violent criminals have formally trained in martial arts. Probably not, because no one would think to quiz convicts on that, but it would be interesting to know if it were at all feasible to glean any idea. Are criminals taking martial arts classes at a greater or lesser rate than non-criminals? Are they watching KZbin videos that depend on the criminal doing action A, and deciding to do action B, or C? Under the assumption that most criminals are impulsive and not very bright, perhaps not, but who knows. How iterative is the game?
@jc-kj8yc2 жыл бұрын
As you said, getting actual data on that is a tough task, but in short, yes, there's a big criminal martial arts scene. There are violent Neo Nazi groups like RAM or the proud boys who train in their own gyms and there are gyms run by organized crime just to name two examples. And these are just in the US. In Europe it's even worse.
@dominikmaral47872 жыл бұрын
If you think about all the videos called "streetfighter vs boxing coach" etc and seeing all the street guys get smoked everytime then most criminals probably have no formal gym experience, on the other hand tho even Mark Zuckerberg trains jiu jitsu and mma so it's best to assume everybody has some basics now
@SMS28842 жыл бұрын
Criminals are opportunists. They target people that look easy to rob. People that aren't paying attention or look like they can't put up a fight. They don't expect you to fight back. You see alot of videos on ASP where the guy isn't paying attention. But to answer your question no you will never be attacked by an expert trained person. Unless you provoke it. People who train, train for defense. I'm sure you've heard situational awareness beat to death. Well situational avoidance is the 2nd part to that. I'm trained and have experience in actual life or death situations. I'm not going to go walking through the ghetto late at night. Don't place yourself in the scenario in the first place.

Great vid as usual. Really thoughtful, practical discussion. One technique I like a lot when fighting over an object (usually when I'm working on pistol retention) is the shoulder block. In bajiquan (a style kung fu called "the bodyguard style" because it was the style of the Imperial bodyguards) there's a technique called the Iron Mountain Lean or Iron Shoulder...its really just a sharp step and shoulder block at clinch range.

Good Info, got three points for ya. If you have to fight someone with a knife the best object is a chair like a barstool reach and shield, jam legs into face, if its grabbed rush forward until you can put the chair on them and sit. Second point is the most effective knife draw is the same as for pistol, side draw, if you are intent are murder get a belt buckle that will hold your knife for cross draw. Third point if you are intent on murder is you don't run up and stab stab stab, never. First you grab the person with your free hand by the shirt so you control the distance then with free hand draw and shank.

I got stabbed twice and needed 13 stitches. He was only an inch from my kidney. I survived. I stood my ground. I made a very poor decision confronting the lesser threat and taking it to the ground.

I don’t understand why people are fixating on what Ryan said about “you’re probably fighting an untrained person”. Edge of Reality still deals with hand switches, strikes with the off hand, and learning to clinch work someone who’s both trained and with a blade. Ryan just pointed out that stuff like that is rare. He didn’t claim it never happens, because otherwise why would he teach how to stop hand switches? Ryan just used that to explain that it’s mainly unlikely that your opponent is a technical wrestler. He might be a very good fighter, which is why EoR still teaches how to stop knife attacks from people who know how to fight, but he’s probably not going to be highly trained in wrestling and clinching with a knife. Great vid, and people really need to understand how fighting works

Most people sticking up others with a knife aren't training to be ambidextrous with a knife, so switching to the non-dominant hand is not an option they exercise. But, when you train with (fake) knives, throwing a knife from one trapped hand to the other successfully is fun as hell. Also, if you're not getting your wacky knife attack/defense out in the gym to see how dumb it would be in real life, then you run the risk of trying something in a live scenario and regretting it.

I had no knife fighting training, no knife defense training, no grappling, only my striking background. Pretty sure that had shit gone down it would have ended up as one of those “winner dies in the ambulance” scenarios. I remember I was so fucking scared that to this day my only visual memory is just the knife and his hand. I don’t remember what he looked like, what he was wearing, even what color of skin. Well, this fixation on "pulling out the weapon" is what caused creation of techniques that release your hands from someones grip. Remember those "grab my hand" things? Nowadays - pretty useless. In Japan were they originated, during old times? Samurais were also fixated on drawing a sword so grabing his hand was castrating him. Until someone came and said "guys...how about...we don't do this" and thought how to free yourself from grab and THEN cut them. People fixate on their stuff. One side on drawing a weapon, other side on stopping this. Without extensive training you will not do anything else.

"Oh the guy could just switch hands" Go to your kitchen, grab a vegetable (go to the store if you dont have a veggie, fatty), put it in your dominant hand, then go get the biggest knife in your kitchen, put the knife in your non-dominant hand, and try to dice that vegetable. In a stressful situation, your body will actively try to prevent you from switching hands unless you meticulously train it to work off-hand. It takes years of practice to shoot as well off-hand as with your dominant hand.

So basically, the best defense in a knife attack is avoiding the getting in a knife attack. Knife fights are never like Steven Segal movies.

The interaction between a police officer and a suspect is totally different than a civilian being attacked in a parking lot by a robber. No doubt a robber attacking a civilian will already have their knife in hand as an intimidation tool before they ever close the distance. In other words, none of these scenarios you just demonstrated will apply for most people watching this video.

You either need to be super submissive or hyper aggressive. I've had a few incidents with knives and got cut once, on my fingers. Sometimes it's safer to not fuck around and escalate things.

If someone TRAINS knife fighting (like a gypsy or some shit) then they WILL drop the knife with 1 hand and pick it up out of the air with the other, or finger toss back towards themself and catch with other hand. But you are probably not going to see that, most average people never even grab a leg in a fight or step on toes as they punch. Its pretty funny when you are standing struggling with someone and you somehow get leaned over so you just grab their ankle and pick it up and they fall down.
