Yes. I don't know if I'd be the very best guy for the job but I do have a significant amount of de-escalation training and 15 years of experience working with people with autism (which seems to be a likely factor here). I'm not saying there is never a time to involve the police but there should be a step between nothing and guys with guns and "no specialized training". I think myself and a 2-3 other people with related experience could improve some outcomes

What I appreciate about these videos and Mike in general, is that he shows real compassion even though he is trying to subdue someone violent. Like yeah, the kids is dangerous, but Mike is actively trying to use as least force as possible. If all cops acted like this, think about how many tragedies would be avoided, how much less public outrage there would be.

I don't disagree with what you are saying but the issue (generally speaking) is not a lack of compassion, it is a lack of training. Most (really all) depts. are shorthanded, over worked, and under trained. Training takes lots of time and money agencies don't have. So why don't more cops train on their own? Many are working 50+ hours a week and are mentally worn-down when they are done with their shift. Also, many LEO's feel they should not be required to pay (personal time & money) for training that should be getting on the clock. Doctors, EMTS/EMS, and other public safety have all their training (required continuing ed.) paid for and built into their work shift. Most cops only get 2-4 range days a year and 4-20 hours of Control Tactics / Combatives a year. All that being said, I agree, Mike has a great demeaner for law enforcement that not all LEO's have. As an FTO I can tell you, it is not getting any better. Less people are applying for "cop jobs" every year.

Thanks Mike for posting this. I work as a nurse, mostly in psych facilities. At times, we have aggressive patients. I frequently instruct other staff on appropriate handlings where we attempt to minimize harm to patient and staff. Always seeking help (ie additional people) is the number 1 rule. Similar to the situations you describe, we have used a bed mattress to create space, pin the aggressor against the wall, and slowly wrap them up (in said mattress) - while disarming them (/medicating them). Truth to your recommendations of using found furniture. Bonus tip: socks for scratchers. Putting socks on the staff hands, to then 'shake hands' style with the aggressor, and transfer the socks on their sharp nails. Looking forward to your upcoming vids, please keep posting. Thank you! I've worked in similar settings and can confirm. I had a good laugh at Mike's opening question because this is a real problem I've had to worry about. Like you said, getting a team together is key. We were usually lucky to have actual plexiglass shields available to immobilize people and protect against improvised weapons/bodily fluids until they could be restrained with a "strong sheet", pinel restraints, chemical restraints, etc. The other big thing, and Mike touched on this with the rookie and him trying to throw the person in opposite directions, is communication and planning, ideally beforehand, or at least as soon as you can immobilize them. Figuring out where you're going to try and immobilize them, who is doing what, what restraints you want to transition to, etc can all save problems, but it just depends on how much time you have before you have to act.

Lol thank you for making this video. I was the guy who sent the message, I was really amped up at the time cuz i commented the next day it happened. My co worker (victim) survived but do to head trauma will be at risk for seizures for a while if not forever. And had staples across his chest and face. The attacker is now surprisingly out on bond/bail whatever awaiting trial. No guns a loud at my work but we do have the WWE chairs lol. Once again thanks for the video.

As someone who does martial arts with weapons, this was on point, people think that bigger or more weapons are better, no, just an something with good reach can do wonders against a dual wielder, better if it can trap them , and combined with not letting him adapt, you have it on a silver platter

Totally agreed. I have a lot of experience with grabs and joint locks, and for me, the other guy having a weapon is actually an advantage for me with the same results that Mike showed in the video when he trapped his partner up, who was still concentrating on his weapons.

Mike perfectly demonstrated a principle we often practice in historical swordsmanship. Reach advantages can be overcome by being very close or very far. He used the chair and headboard as a shield to pin the dual wielder and safely repositioned to grappling distance.

This reminds me of a time working in healthcare, where a delirious patient (70+ lady, 5 foot nothing tall) had got hold of the top part of an IV stand and had smashed a hole in wire reinforced window. We couldn’t really allow her to continue, but this was a time before we had security. The location was a corridor, wide enough to swing the 3foot metal bar. Our solution was for a colleague and I to rush her, one going high and the other low and to hug her, reducing her ability to swing and to ultimately remove the IV pole from the equation. It worked, no one got hurt, especially the patient and eventually she calmed down

In DSP training for dealing with an armed EDP, they teach a pretty standard couch cushion stuff against wild swinging weapons or edged weapons. Testing it out with some kicking shields against a simulated knife it actually works pretty well, especially with two on one.

I think weapons of opportunity aren't talked about enough, even in self defense schools. A chair is a great tool. Gives you distance, it has 4 different legs they have to deal with (as you said, they'll hurt themselves trying to attack). It's enough of a tactical problem that it opens them up for you to transition to something else and get in their ooda loop.

I think this is why law enforcement in other cultures have used variants of the man-catcher weapon. It allows you to stuff an assailant wielding a melee weapon in a way that's similar to what's been shown in this video.
