Jeff, after months and months of watching different home renovators' videos I have been able to narrow down my choices of renovators that I go to for DIY videos. You, Sir, are by far, a cut above all of the hundreds of other instructional and informational renovators offered on KZbin. You not only offer complete tutorials that cover every possible home renovation idea but you also give the DIY'er the options of materials that are available on the market, what to look for, and the Do's and Don't's when working on a project. As a 67 yr. old DIY female, whose only income is dependent on Social Security, I can honestly say that you have saved me a few hundred dollars. I am blessed. I only wish I would have discovered you a few years earlier and I could have saved several hundred more. Thank you, Jeff, for all of the brilliant information you share with the public. I couldn't do it without you! God bless you and yours!

That would be me. First thing I did when I bought my house back in like 2012ish, 2013ish? Replaced every light with LED lights. Fricken way expensive, especially back then. But so worth it. Especially for my house. My house still has 100 amp service, and most of the house is wired to just a few 15 amp fuses. Yeah, fuses. I've had to replace like 2 fuses in the 7 or 8 years that I've lived here. I have LED lighting to thank for that.

Sparky here 32 years in ICI. We finished a near total gut of our house not to long ago. I did not do the electrical myself, primarily to not throw off the generals schedule and so there is no issue in the future for insurance purposes. It's a two edged sword. There are certain things I would have done differently than the electrical contractor did and on the other hand he is a low rise residential guy and knows those codes far better than I. He was also far more aware of, in this case LED lights available. I had have done a moderate amount of ICI LED retro fitting but no a huge amount. So here is what I have learned through both my work and the reno. - these lights are BRIGHT. There is a ton of Lumens coming from them. - the E. Contractor put four on our stairs and upper landing to the 2nd floor. - 2 sets of two. The distance between the fixtures in each set is around 30" and the sets from each other is about 6'. Way too close together. This is like a WWII aircraft search light. - I was not aware of exactly sure during rough in how bright they were going to be. Part of the problem is that mental transition between incandescent and LED and learning the differences. - By code - the cigarette box (driver) is supposed to be mechanically fastened to structure because this is where the line voltage enters the fixture. Functionally you don't want that box possibly moving around and the 120v terminations possibly becoming loose. Based on what I have seen this might be the code but people don' do it. - Except of course..... - Back to my reno. In our stairs the angle of the roof is overhead with the LED fixtures. The insulation is spray foam and pockets were left for the fixtures. - In this case the driver boxes were screwed to the underside of the angled roof. Off to one side of the fixture hole. So of course if they fail I have to cut out the drywall etc. -Do we know how long these drivers/LEDs are going to last? No not really, we only have the claims on the side of the box and as grown assed adults do we believe this? - If you are doing the install yourself or having a reno done, do yourself a favour. If there are fixtures going to be installed where the driver boxes will be effectively made inaccessible, look into who the maker of the product is. Go to their website or call the order/tech desk. What you want to find out is if there are extender cables available, such that the driver can be mounted in accessible location. As I found out later, in my case they could have. -On that note you may need to find out if more than one extender cable can be used if you need to go a longer distance yet. - Different vendors have the colour selector in the driver box. One I worked with had five different settings using dip switches. - One of the things I have looked into, as we still are to this beyond our major reno, is replacing the eaves and soffit. I queried the electrical distributor order desk I have use about LED lighting for the soffit. The answer is there is nothing, at this time, that is specifically rated for this purpose. As he said to me people have used the moisture rated LED's meant for showers, however there are two problems with this. One of course if something really bad happens, the insurance will not payout. The other, and this why the insurance won't payout, is these fixtures are not rated for external use only internal.What has been experienced is after 2-3 winters, ie harsh conditions, they stop working. It's only a matter of time before industry comes out with rated fixtures.

Jeff has the BEST DIY videos on KZbin. Always informative, spoken in easy English and with a sense of humor. Just like you had set down with your smart next door neighbor for a beer and had a good discussion about the subject. And they cover every type of renovation project you could imagine. I changed all my house lights to LED's back in 2010 . I had several 24 inch Fluorescents in closets. I just changed them all to LEDs using just the new LED tube lights no wiring needed. I also installed Insteon dimmer switches back in 2010 as well so all lights are dimmable and programmable. I can even change where the switch is located without having to run new wiring . So for that switch thats across the room making you walk in darkness to get to it just mount a new switch at the entrance to the room, simple. Love your stuff Jeff . Having just one arm I've had to look for lots of tricks to do home improvements. Wish you'd been available 20 years ago... Cheers...

Lighting designer here; glad to see you having fun with some of the newest LED lights. A few points: In the US, variable color products are being labeled "color tunable" or "color selectable." Under cabinet fixtures flipped around and mounted flat to the header over closet doors make excellent closet lights. Spacing is a tricky subject. The fixture manufacturer publishers a ratio called the spacing to mounting height ratio. You might have to call the manufacturer or get your hands on a photometric test report. It is a simple ratio often called S-M or SMH. You just multiply the ratio by the height of your ceiling. A 1:1 ratio means you'll get even lighting in an 8'-0" ceiling with fixtures spaced no more than 8'-0" apart. 1:2? 10'-0" apart in that 8'-0" ceiling. The amount of light you'll get depends on the light output, the spread of the light, and the colors of the room it's in. Last, the tripod outdoor light was nicknamed the "Space Needle" fixture by one of my clients after the famous tower in Seattle, WA. =)
@gerrypower94334 жыл бұрын
I messed up the SMH ratio; the latter should be 1:1.2

I will second everything Jeff has said here. In the process of remodeling an older beach house and after watching all of his videos which are great by the way I used the affiliate link on his website to order every light from GTA electric. Saved a ton of money this route and note to mention GTA has a great customer service department, fast shipping and even helped over the phone during the weekend. The lights are great, easy to install, the brightness colors are consistent and the ones installed outdoors just recently survived going through a hurricane. I have these lights hooked to dimmers, 3 way switches and even motion switches. Buy one light and have incandescent in outside eaves, day light in living areas and bright lights in bathrooms and closets and be done!!!

I'm so hyped now to redo both by basement lighting which, get this, has exposed florescent tube lights, recessed tube lights, and recessed square lights in... Acoustic tile. Maybe I can't get rid of the tile yet but I'm gonna swap out most everything with these recessed ones since I can just reuse them if I replace the ceiling with drywall. Upstairs has no ceiling lights in any room except the dining and kitchen, so they'll look amazing in all the rooms there too. I was quoted $2500 to add lights upstairs... What do you think Jeff, think I can beat that 😎💪

Also I wonder if there's a product that allows me to use these with smart home technology (which you don't seem to talk about very often. Smart thermostats/smart water leak detectors/smart garage door openers/security cameras/smart water irrigation systems...etc) *EDIT* Found a smart switch with dimmer and non dimmer options that take any light run (or outlet run) wired into it to control with voice/phone/or switch its called a "Kasa Smart Dimmer Switch by TP-Link" Although I don't know what it means when it says "Single Pole"

On LED lights, is a homeowner still limited to the usual 12 electrical items (plugs, lights) per circuit breaker or are more items permitted due to the low wattage requirements of LED lights?
@4philipp4 жыл бұрын
While I don’t have an answer to your question, I think it would be good to limit the # of LED lights. This way you can create zones in a room with different switches
@mehdinazari2204 жыл бұрын
As long as you don't exceed the 80% rule you should be fine. For example you're only allowed 12 amp on a 15 amp circuit or 12 plugs each plug counts as 1 amp
@TheDarthJesus4 жыл бұрын
You are not limited to 12 lights, but you are limited to 15A for a lighting circuit (in a home). 80% of 15A is 12A, 12A x 120v = 1440w. Because you can't change the bulbs in these led fixtures, you can simply divide 1440 by the wattage of the light (let's say 10w for easy math, the ones he showed in the black boxes said 8w), 1440/10 = 144 lights on one breaker. You can only do this if the fixture cannot change wattage.

The motion sensor light would not work in my closet. It would just turn off because we all know those days we can’t figure out what to wear and we just stand there staring at the clothes… proof …. In the dark ……..lol 😂 I still love these LED lights… thanks Jeff ❤️

Jeff, I want to do this but the wall switches only control half switched plugs. There is no ceiling light. I can get power from other areas in the attic but is there a remote switch option for the cans so I don't have to fish switch wires? Thanks. Love the channel.

nope. your house is old and needs better wiring to add lights. time to fish! Cheers!

A possible solution is installing a maestro dimmer in the attic, and pair it to a pico remote switch which you can wall mount in your garage.
