I love how he treats her. I wish I had someone who showed that much compassion for me. It has nothing to do with sex. Just nice to have someone who will always love you.

The disease doesn't only happen to girls. I am the perfect example. I started starving myself, when I was seventeen. I had been stout for a long time, and was thrilled to finally be able to shed the pounds. It's true. Once you start, it's great that the weight comes off so quickly.

I can't believe this film is thirty years old! Even though I'm a recovered anorexic after living with the illness for nine years, (and I'm only 20 now) I find humor in thinking the doctor should have had a group exorcism with Casey and her family, covering them in holy water yelling "The power of Christ compels you!" Gosh, that doctor was creepy at the end... But I loved the actor. RIP Jason Miller!

Thanks a lot for posting this. I have been coming here and doing a search and luckily, today I found this little gem. Yes, the ending is a bit cheesy and I'm not totally convinced she would eat a whole bowl of ice cream right off the bat, but oh well. ;) Oh and I LOVE Joni Mitchell, so I have to say that I'm very fond of the theme song.

Thank you for posting this. I've wanted to see this for 30 years. I've had disordered eating for most of my life, due to pressures of dancing. Yes guys feel just as much insecurity when another guy comes in to the studio with zero body fat naturally and you are left thinking "Starve" as the only way to compete. Creepy ending, but at least an important topic was brought to light. Thank you again for posting this.

wow. This is an AMAZING movie. It really motivated me! I haven't eaten anything today and I think I'm going to do alright for the rest of the week. I'm just like Carol sometimes I feel like. Just get everyone off your back and start again. But that's okay with me. I'm going to do great in life.

Everyone is hypersensitive these days. I've been reading the comments below and am surprised that so many commenters think the therapist is creepy. I think he was great. This is an old movie and reflects the culture of those times. Maybe that's why people think it's such a weird ending. In the 70's my fourth grade teacher would take us out for ice cream after school, and nobody thought anything of it.

It fails to show the post ice cream panic attack and everyone who has ever been in treatment knows what I mean. One of the units I was on handed out anxiety meds before meals to numb us into submission. They would have given her a feeding tube before central line nutrition and it would have been immediate upon admittance if she were that sick.

Thank you gabbyjw for giving me a chance to watch this again. I haven't seen it since it originally aired. I didn't realize Melanie Maron & Ally Sheedy was in it too. Joni Mitchell's music sounds familiar. Even though wasn't able to see that part w/o sound was still excellent! Jennifer Jason Leigh is an excellent actress & although its not visible in this early work, I still really enjoyed watching it once again. She definitely has range.

there are lots of good and bad aspects of this movie, as with any movie about eating disorders. it's difficult to tie *everthing* we go through into one single movie. it would take forever! i think it did a decent job focusing on some major points in the limited time frame of a TV movie. especially being based in the 80's.

Hmmm, you're right, good point. Though Jodie began acting much younger. She played Becky in Tom Sawyer when she was about 6 or 7 whereas Jennifer's was much older. Plus Jennifer's early roles were more of the innocent girl & Jodie's (except for Becky) were the tough I'm making my way through my adventures types of roles (like Candleshoe & The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane).

According to IMDB, "with medical supervision, Jennifer Jason Leigh wasted down to 87 pounds" for this role. THATS RIDICULOUS!! By the way, my comment about being cured after the insurance runs out was a sarcasm. But unfortunately, that's how it works in many of the ED units. Eating disorders last a lifetime. They are never "cured", even after they seem to get better. I call it "remission". Like alcoholics, they are either lapsing or recovering

@MisakiModel I see where you're coming from-the whole idea is that she has to be living for herself and not for the approval of her parents and everyone else. But I disagree-I think she ate the ice cream because she realized it was okay, not to please Clay :)
