Paid him 250 dollars a day. His clothes and truck taken care of without no thought on his end. Tools on discount...health benefits and 250 dollars a day. He died from lung cancer. Smoking at the age of 45. Habits.... I know someone sober who only makes 35 dollars a day. Part time. Has more than my friend did.

I would say a good handyman in Westchester NY could make a very good living. I am in my 60s and my wife is always trying to pimp me out to the neighbors. In my town a starter house is about one million. The average home is about 1.7 million. Most families make at least 300,000 many make 750,000 and up. Average property tax is 40,000, it crazy. Everyday I see contractors doing work at homes throughout my neighborhood. I am one of the very few who does his own home repairs. No one cuts their own lawn or clean their homes. I dont mind letting someone clean my house. You are telling the truth.

The guy that called you a crook is correct. Having made more money than him does not justify charging $150 for a light fixture that takes a half hour to do. It's people like you that make people do their own work, which is good, but bad for the elderly and women that don't typically get involved w/ handyman work. Handymen should be charging what is fair, NOT WHATEVER THEY CAN GET. I'll give you points for your honesty though.

DFW handyman here. There’s a lot of Hispanic workers dragging down the wages. HOWEVER if you’re white, insured, honest, do good work, have website.. you can make close to what Handyman is making. Also, you can leverage the cheap labor and KILL it. I do a couple remodels per year but mostly rental property maintenance. I bill out about $75 first hour, $50 after that. I pay my guys well at 20-25 hr. Plus gas and bonus incentives. Was in Houston after Harvey.. honestly had $1,000 days for months on end. No state income tax, business tax is less than 1%, work outside year around, real estate is affordable. Best economy in the country. Love me some Texas.

Choices and agreement to achieve an end...outcome. Goal line. We call this negotiation w purpose. You have a purpose. "Goal" also known as a destination. You arrive to a destination inline with your purpose. When you fail this you can die...this is not the goal.... Death is not living. Scraping by is not fun either. But necessary till you get tired of that crap. Needs vs wants....and what you settle for. This is called terms. Terms of an agreement...is called cooperation. Not competition. I’m not sure how people don’t understand that if you live in a little town, that you can’t make the same money. It’s a free market! If you want to charge $300 labor to change out a toilet, and someone wants to pay that, it’s 100% legal! Rich people don’t want the guy that is going to charge $30 in their home. It’s just the truth.

I learned this a long long time ago. If you make 3 circles that overlap. They will form a triangle. Each circle is has a name 1 PRICE 2 QUALITY 3 SERVICE Where the 3 circles overlap this area is labeled VALUE. Every customer has these 3 criteria and for each the order is different. This priority will change how the location of VALUE area moves. The underlying message is that if the customer thinks he got a good VALUE then he/she did. When you are in business you need to know what the customers motivation is and where it is based. You are very good at selecting the correct customers. I am working on finding these customers too. Thank you!

I do remodeling not handyman work. But that comment of only charging 50 bucks for an outlet, just doesn't make any sense or money. Let's look at it this way. So the guy gets called to do 1 outlet. He wakes up grabs his coffee jumps in his truck head over to the job. It's an occupied residence so he is not started at 6 am. So let's say he starts somewhere between 8 and 9. He goes in the home talks to the home owner. Tests the line. Assuming it's just the outlet and not the line. He locates the breaker. He does his work. Then again talks to the client by this time it's now 10:30. So he obviously doesn't have time to get packed up and drive to another client to make it two switches for the morning. So he fucks around until lunch. Well congratulations you made a whopping 50 bucks for an entire morning. As a ticketed electrician he would make more working for someone else.

This is excellent information especially for those new to running their own business and even for those of us that have been doing it for awhile now. I live in an area that is known as poverty with a view. The average home cost over 300k but the average salary is $15 an hour. The kicker here is we are a college town with plenty of second home owners here as well. We have lots of million dollar homes and those are the customers I target. When you are in this business long enough you realize that you would rather charge what you need to live and cover your overhead than to charge less and work more going broke the whole time. You can go broke sitting at home drinking a beer rather than running around like a chicken with your head cut off. The hardest customers I have ever worked for were the lower dollar customers because they want the 30k bathroom for 10k and there just isn’t any way those numbers are going to ever work out in your favor and they are the ones who want to nit pick everything. Also if someone ever tells you they don’t want to pay the going rate for something in your area just walk away because I can tell you from experience they will just be a royal pain to work with and you won’t make it up in another portion of the job you will end up working for free and you will miss out on good jobs because you are busy doing that one.

Texas pays the most Taxes into the welfare system...for some weird reason. Most of it is from around Austin. Also...You can be tax exempt and very wealthy in Texas. I Don't eat bread or drink milk. No dairy. I Don't drink booze or smoke. I Don't eat Animals or Hunt. I Don't play games or sports. Yes...I'm from Texas... I get paid exactly what you charge or more. No I don't live in Austin...but I worked around outside Austin. No I didn't do free estimates. We call it the golden triangle for a reason. Alabama? That's the number 1 welfare state. 1. Alabama. 2. Mississippi. 3. Lousiana 4. Missouri. You can have a good income and career in this field in Texas. Habits...you got bad habits and settle for crap. Then that's what you'll end up with. I did extremely well in Texas. Always do. The problem however is the wet counties. Bad habits and irrelevant career choices. Alcohol....Cigarette Smokers. Drugs and Theft. Yes we have Theft...lots of it. I got robbed several times by dummies with bad habits and unruly girlfriends. Texas does have a diverse economy. Lifestyle....u got bad habits and hellacious hobbies. Then you won't make it anywhere. Stay sober and eat green. Say what you mean...and keep you word. Be willing to work. There's plenty ways to stay busy and receive benefit from income in items of trade or shares. In Texas. Every time....i hear the naysayers. Bad habits are obviously abounding in their life. 1. There is no competition. Poor people compete. Always try to do it on their own and be proud at your expense. That's why they cheat. Rob and steal. The areas with highest crime rates are highly competitive. Otherwise it wouldn't be called a co-op. We cooperate and say what we mean...and get what we need. High quality gear....high quality tools.... Sober .... Stay sober my friends and quit being hateful and jealous. I can go to Alabama and make it. Just like I did in Texas. Been there. I've been to every state in the United States. Same shit every where. What works in Texas does work in Missouri. The value of the dollar doesn't mean your not receiving payment. If I get a 6000 square foot house. Brand new in Oklahoma for 75000. Of course I don't buy houses In into the stuff it's sitting on. And you bought a crappy rental in California for 500,000. That's only the size of my tool box. In an earthquake.....riot area with a horrible penal system. And you got bad habits....high taxes. Uh....whose getting screwed.

I have a similar situation. It's not a beach town but there are mountains and lakes. We have 1,500 year round residents and 10,000 more with second homes. There is more work than the local labor force can keep up with. I charge almost twice as much as my competition and I get more jobs than I can accept. All because I answer every phone call and look at every potential job. That plus a 20 year reputation for quality work, a clean and organized job site and shutting my radio off when the client is home. I'm scheduling exterior paining two years out.

Love your stuff Handyman! One quick aside....I live in Texas...In an area that has been one of the fastest growing cities in America for several years now. I agree about more competition...but two things come to mind...there is a ton more work here than in many other areas of the US. Also, I have hired a few day labors (Manuel, Jose) and they don't give a crap about quality! As a matter of fact they think they have a better way of doing it! Haha. I work alone now. I learned that going the extra mile is worth its weight in gold! (It has been raining all day here. (Ido rainwater drainage and sprinkler systems) So I call some perspective clients and ask if I can come over to look at their lawn to see how the water flows and see the areas that are flooded! You're right about Austin having a large supply of blue collar available but finding the high quality tradesmen is a different story. There's always room for excellence. I make good money (not rich) but I take my truck to an expensive mechanic simply because he knows his trade and there's no getting jerked around so it's worth it to have that level of competence and reliability. Making money is the dream. Some feel uncomfortable charging amounts fair to a trade because to those people the work is easy so in turn the cost shouldn't be "high". BUT if you don't realize the major population of where you live can't change light fixtures you have to charge to keep yourself in business and living so there are people "you" to change light fixtures in the future. The same trade person/handy person out there who say its easy to do our work and charge less ask yourself how much would you pay someone to do something you need but don't know how to do or understand to figure out, the answer, what it costs. That could be equivalent to you charging $100/hr

There's still a lot of money to be made in those lighter areas if you know how. I live in the greater Nashville area and have worked on multi-million dollar homes, but I've made a ton of money from unexpected sources, for instance remodeling a church leading to several jobs of various sizes from members of that congregation. Also, with an aging population, especially in rural areas, accessibility remodeling is a huge part of my business these days. But this is still part of knowing your market. Median income is just one factor.

But I will completely disagree with you right now on the point you tried to make regarding the electrician accusing you of being a crook. Your response tells me you are in the mindset of a crook, believe it or not. Just my opinion. The electrician is making the point that you charge more because your customers can pay more, not that the service you provide is worth more. Just because the customer can pay more doesn’t make it moral to charge more. That is the move of a scammer. If that is what you do you can’t say your an honest man making an honest living. I side with the electrician on this. Best of luck

I charge $300 per light fixture. If I have to travel more then 10 miles it is a $450 minimum charge plus any additional fixtures are $300 each.

people dont like my prices, they are high. I will be there in 20 minutes if you need me. I also make it very easy to pay in any form. I am going to raise my prices to outrageous levels soon because I have not had a full day off in 9 months. I work very fast, and I dont make a mess. People realize their is a reason other companies are cheaper. Go ahead and wait a month for a guy that no call no show

Great video Handyman! Spot on. I learned this lesson about 4 years ago, when I worked for a client who taught me some invaluable lessons and information about economic relativity. In short, my clients are always willing to pay me, up to what they make on an hourly rate, for my services. I target neighborhoods where people are earning $300k+ annually. It has worked very well for me. People that earn more than $300k will choose me over others, because they have faith that the job will be done, as well as it can be done. Like refers like and my business is growing in this demographic.

$80k should be achievable in a lot of places. A decent size city with white collar jobs.

We decide what we make after we ask the market for guidance, there’s nothing wrong with asking for what the job is worth. Not limitations on our self-worth

Thank you for the info, I’ve been watching your channel a lot lately, I don’t any experience in home repairs. I have always work on car’s since a kid, taken electronic apart when my mother wasn’t looking lol. I rent so sometimes the owners take for ever to fix things around the house, I’ve fix the bathrooms vent when it stop spinning I would hear it but it wouldn’t spin. Changed an outlet, paint the house, changed the light fixture to LED. can’t break it when it’s already broken. Watching your channel has got me intrigued to get into the handing man business as a side job, might go work for somebody to learn even if it’s for free, just to get some experience under my belt

Be fair with your customers. Make the money but be fair. It comes back in spades! Just had a lady in California send me 200 bucks via PayPal for being her Handyman, and I haven't been over to here rental in months!! LOL Merry Christmas!!

My customers either don't have to knowledge/skills to do the repair, the tools to do the repair or the time to do the repair because their time is better spent doing something else. For example, a lawyer who makes $1,000.00 dollars an hour has no problem paying me $150.00 per hour because I free up his time so he can make another $1,000.00 and I take away that little problem that's been bugging him.
