soooo is the meg tooth not rare or what?
@blackriverfossils
@blackriverfossils 5 жыл бұрын
great question! it depends on your definition of rare I suppose. on one hand, meg teeth are not rare. consider that megalodon as a species lived at least 10 million years and they existed globally. one individual would lose hundreds, if not thousands in a lifetime. imagine how many teeth every shark lost cumulatively during that time! on the other hand, nice megalodon teeth are rare. of all the teeth i mentioned before, many did not fossilize at all or were completely annihilated by natural erosion at some point since they were lost. Only a scarce few of all megalodon teeth ever shed survived to be recognizable as shark teeth today. these sharks ate whales and had tremendous bite force so many of the teeth broke during feeding. lots of incomplete teeth fossilized. fewer teeth were complete when they fell from the sharks' mouths. Some of those broke over time due to natural processes like drying out and becoming wet again. the salt in the water is the worst because when a tooth dries, salt crystals form and bust the tooth apart from the inside. so basically everything is against a tooth surviving tens of millions of years in complete condition. those are the ones people want and they ARE rare.

For the rest of us, they can be very rare , like an orgasm. They aren't being made any more, and some leave circulation each year. Mine's over 60 years , in my home; about 4 plus inches. It's not perfect, but unless you have a dozen or so of them, it'll make your eyes open wide, when you think it came from an animal the size of a standard school bus, and could swallow you whole if it wanted to.

WOW So thats a construction site? They have just dug deep enough to hit the fossil layer? So very cool! We use to dig in the spoil dried out pools from the Savannah river dredging. I have heard you cant do that any more. Sad if true. You had to dig deep to get the big ones but most of the time they would be chipped from the pipes. I want to go on one of these trips inland either by river or a dig site some day! Thanks for sharing!

There are quite a few coastal sites in the UK where fossil shark teeth can be found but only 1 site in Essex that produces megalodon on very rare occasions and they are usually in poor shape. Is this rare when it comes to Megalodon teeth? I'm just in AWE that there are so many in one area. Is that how it usually is? Why is it that there are so many different kinds of shark's teeth here in this one area? I was always under the impression that Megalodon teeth were rare but wow you must have the magic touch my friend. Very Cool Video!!
@blackriverfossils
@blackriverfossils 3 жыл бұрын
yes finding piles of megalodon teeth like this is rare when you consider it was a land site. its much harder to find them on land because they are usually covered by so much dirt. In the water it is not as rare because the currents pile together heavy things, so if you find a previously undiscovered gravel pile, it will be even more loaded than this if its in the right area. That leads me to your second question, why are there so many types of shark teeth? That's because this area USED to be a river pile back in the ice age when a large coastal river flowed here. It eroded previously fossilized shark teeth, deposited over the millions of years prior and mixed together by the incessant cycle of oceanic ingressions and regressions that occurred as the climate changed over the eons. as to whether they are rare, read the pinned comment at the top of the list for my thoughts on that. thanks for watching!

It’s all just fun and hobbies for me but I’ve enjoyed it since I was a little boy. And large shark teeth would just be a dream come true!
