Galaxy on Fire 2 is a mobile & macOS video game you may or may not remember from your childhoods. It's an open-world space shooter, and a game that was way ahead of its time, back when it was released in 2010.
The game sold millions of copies, and yet nobody seems to ever bring it up these days when the topic of old iOS games are discussed. I hope you find some enjoyment out of this video.
To those of you who know me from Discord, I hope you especially enjoy this.

Extra notes:
- I forgot to mention Galaxy on Fire: Alliances. This was Fishlabs' attempt at an MMORPG, which sadly flopped. It's an important part of the real-world GoF story, and somehow I neglected to mention it at all!
- I also give special credit at the end to four Fishlabs team members, but there are way more who deserve so much more credit than the quick appearance of their names on screen. To all who I missed - thank you.
- The Steam version of GoF2 is also still playable, but doesn't contain any DLCs.
- I recorded the voiceover long before I met the devs at the Everspace 2 launch party in August '23 - since then I have had more insight and uhh might have another project or two in the works 👀
- I may add more notes here over time. Or not. Who knows?

DISCLAIMER: I'm aware there are a number of minor editing mistakes in this video, and some segments have no actual footage besides my 'face' cam. I started this gigantic video as a passion project way back in early 2022, possibly 2021. Video essays were all the rage, and I wanted GoF to have its limelight, similar to that video essay on Infinity Blade you may have seen a couple years back. However, to quote Carla Paolini, "times are changing" - and times were indeed changing for me. Life got verrrry busy, and this project gradually was pushed down in my list of priorities, until one day it had been months since I even looked at it.
I tried to return to it many times, hoping to continue it to the same level of quality & dedication as I had done with the first 1/3rd - but I just couldn’t bring myself to continue creating all those motion graphics, flashy edits and so on. Not to mention all the gameplay recording required for it. This truly was a passion project, and unfortunately my passion for it had almost entirely dwindled.
But, so as not to put all my work to waste, I wanted to put this out there, even in its relatively unpolished state. Thanks to @Ayethon and his high quality gameplay recordings, I was able to at least fill the blank spaces with gameplay (with my complete voiceover accompanying it all of course), to at least have a full video with no blank spaces. (afaik I haven’t left any in my mistake).
At worst, this morphs into a podcast in the last half. But I’m happy with what I was able to accomplish overall. It’s a behemoth of a video - a little unpolished - and in retrospect, was way too ambitious to ever finish to the same level as the opening third, unless I worked on it 24/7. This has been in the back of my mind to finish for… about a year now, so it feels good getting it out there at last, despite any jank.
Either way, enjoy! I love this game. Also Eight voice reveal whaaaaaaat

GOF is genuinely such a triumph in terms of style and graphics in mobile games. it's insane how much better it looks than even modern mobile games. even GOF 3 is really rough around the edges. the polish in insane and I can't even begin to understand the effort that went in to it.

GoF2 is the single best and the most timeless game I have ever played and will keep on playing and replaying. I first got introduced to this game way back in 2011 when I first got an iPad for my 4th birthday. Bro I was fascinated with the sci-fi setting and I kept on wondering how could humans reach space in the future? I still listen to the track everyday that plays when a lot of stealth fighters are there, i rank it the best for me amongst every game that I have ever played. This game ultimately inspired me to study science and astronomy over my years in school, take up physics and mathematics as a subject in 11th grade and now I'm aspiring to study Astrophysics at a college when I pass out from school THIS year after giving my 12th grade exams in February. I will never forget this game which made me find my true love, Astrophysics.

The "raiding cargo ships -> better scanner -> better tractor beam -> better ship -> better raiding" is one of my favorite gameplay loops of all time. It requires a combination of effort, gameworld savvy and luck that sucks you in *organically*, and it's not even what the game is ostensibly about. GoF2 ruined me on mobile games for a long time

I played this game again recently, and still do. I learned a glitch that allows me to duplicate weapons and sell them for huge amounts of quick credits

I remember GoF being the only game in java that had versions from over 2-3mb which is the equivalent of 2-3gb quality games at the time. the 3mb versions were modded/overhaul versions of GoF.

I recall how this was the second game I found randomly on the App Store back when I got my first independent device, the old iPod Touch Gen 5. I played about a few minutes of it before my attention got diverted, and picked it back up when I obtained my first iPad a couple years later. Holy damn was I blown away. The detail and immersiveness that the game entailed for a product of its time was truly, at the risk of sounding redundant, ahead of its time. I have now since completed a run at every difficulty millions of times now and it never gets old. Really hope the game gets the recognition it so absolutely deserves. It made mine, and quite possibly, all our childhoods.

My only gripe with GoF2 is how the endgame just constantly dumps a billion pirates onto you every time you enter a system. I just want to grind neutron star spice 😭

Childhood game, spent a ton of hours on the Java version on my Sony Ericsson and also a couple more on the Android version of the game. Back in school i even got hooked my friend into the game and we were playing together on a break time. I'm happy that people stilll love to talk about this game. Great video and can't wait for more.

The original Galaxy on Fire 3D was one of my first experiences with gaming *period*. It was an excellent first experience for 10 year old me, and I was immediately hooked when 2 came out. I’m still playing this game today, and still finding new things to do and new things to try. It’s a shame this franchise sank under mismanagement.
