Imperial Armour and Forgeworld for Imperial Guards used to feel like browsing a World War 2 scale model store section, seeing all the realistic variety and variants of Allied or Nazi tanks, bunkers, and gun emplacements. Whether you have the unit is moot since it’s an upgrade to other units abilities, but if you do that’s one expensive way to visualise the land raiders arriving…

I have a Chapain dreadnought and I will still use it in games even though I just might have to field it as a regular boxnaught. WOuld love to see the Sabre weapon platform comming back as it would be great for protecting an Imperial Guard camp in a diorama. Not sure how well it would work in a game though. Oh and we need to get the lifta arm back so it can be used both for battle wagons and for Stompas.

Some time ago I made a model of a Caryall (from Dune videogames) in the style of 40k imperial craft. When I posted the pictures someone told me about that Thunderhawk transporter. My model had one downside - it was big...the engines of that thing were as big as the classic Thunderhawk itself. And because I won't be able to print it anywhere, I didn't fully finished that model. But it was fun Blender learning process. :-)

The forge world resin conundrum is hard the modern plastic kits really only work as main releases because of how expensive the up front cost is. Resin is nice because of the ability to make more limited quantities with a less up front cost, the problem is that the quality of the resin castings isn't always as consistent and potentially more labor intensive to get consistent resin quality😅

My choice is 100% the Renegade guard kits. I have a few of them back when i played and they were amazing (way better than the generic, flavorless GW ones has now). The Ogryns were the highlights of the serie and i really regret not getting more of them back then.

Thunderhawks transporters are from Epic Armageddon, the mini was released around 2003-04, also Chaplain dreads were in stock until 2019, when the 8th Ed SM codex 2.0 was released, chap dreads get a huge boost and all the SMs players run the get one , they reach almost 3x the FW price on eBay because they were top meta in events.

Luckily enough I actually have one of those Chaplain Dreadnaughts *flex flex* I paid a fraction of the price of a kit on the after market, and mine has an absolute tonne of damage all over it (ie. model damage, not cool battle damage effects) the torso doesn't even stick to the legs, but I still love it!

Forge world still makes some amazing minis for Necromunda but I can see why the larger kits get 'retired'. Typically a silicon resin mould only has a usable life of 30-50 castings so for the majority of larger kits it would not be financially sound to make a second run of moulds, for the minis however the turnover is probably quicker and the cost of 1 mini covers the cost of 1 mould that can produce 50 models.

I think the forgeworld `being poorer quality resin kits than GW plastic` is possibly only true of the larger kits - which is true of any large flat pieces of resin. The Necromunda character pieces are amazing quality and far more detailed than the plastic characters.

Forgeworld has got to ditch old resin and move to 3D printing imo. They should be trying to set themselves up as the bleeding edge of 3D printing with the aim of getting it put into GW stores so you can print things like shoulder pads or whatever in-store.

I don't know. Maybe GW and ForgeWorld know that there is way more money to be made in continuing to sell plastic and traditional resin kits, or maybe they're desperately selling what they can for maximum profit before the whole thing comes tumbling down. Not everyone can have a 3D printer, and a lot of people only want one small army anyway, but on the other hand even if you don't have a printer it's usually cheaper to get stuff printed than buy plastic. Right now I'm printing a clone of the Astraeus super-heavy tank using discounted resin, and the total cost should come out at around £10, maybe less.

the resin was not much better way back when it has more or less had the same quality control problem all along, in fact its gotten better its just that plastic tech has advanced past what forgeworld can do. their main problem is scale. other resin manufacturers has better resin but do not have the scale that forgeworld does. FW has outlived its purpose. they put out models they dont have enough faith will sell in enough numbers to warrant a plastic mold. FW resin is better then finecast but the bar is set so low among GW customers that that is good enough.

I'm sorry, FW resin has always sucked, so do their practices for demolding an packing. The resin is diluted with lots of acetone to make it more pliable for demolding among other reasons, but it also makes it more fragile and temperature sensitive. They also have the habit of leaving these huge resin-gate blocks on the minis, which typically more than double the shipping weight, and damages the actual parts of the models. This isn't hyperbole, I have gotten large FW models and cut off all the resin gates and weighed them, and seen all the damage caused by those resin gates - chips galore. Save your self the anguish, and just stay way away from them.

I've literally had to have the same model shipped to me three times before, and each time it was damaged for the exact same reasons (as mentioned in my original comment). The only reason the cycle ended is because I ended up with enough duplicate parts that I could assemble one undamaged model out of them.
