I know 2011 Coats Opener was technically an "opener," but I still think it was more of a ballad than the actual ballad. That ballad felt real transitional.

@@WhiteKnightWilly 2015 and 2016 for sure, 2017 was the best ballad but they made lost the impact by playing it backfield, 2018 also was great but nothing is beating SCV. I actually really didn't like 2022's ballad, but 2023 was definitely the best (only other one that's close is BD)

@@Nick_Adkins Honestly, as a Bloo glazer myself, 2017 was the year that put me off of DCI until 2024 rolled around. I was NOT a fan of Jagged Line, it felt way too much like they were trying to recapture the previous year's success, which of course did not pan out. The only real thing I got out of it was Psychopomp on my music playlist. The show ends too abruptly too. Honestly it just needed more time in the oven.

i think crown’s 2014 ballad is better than tilt purely because of the emotion it brings out of me. that show has great theme and pacing. 2022 is the only year i’m not sure about. tristan and isolde was amazing in 2023

Modern dci fans prefer swing sections and screamers with very few drawn out full ensemble phrases. It’s why there are tons of comments disagreeing with the video. I hope crown never changes their writing. Crown’s, Phantom’s, and SCV’s writing are keeping dci great. Cadets were another group that had killer writing. They will be missed.
