Colt, thank you for the most insightful review of the new Trio 6 ST6 monitors. I had the original Focal Twins and then tried the ATC 25a Mark II's in my studio. They are incredible monitors and the mid separation and smooth tweeter is astonishing. The lows are tight and good, but I would want a sub with them for mastering and any contemporary music. For rock, you could probably get away with not having a sub. I returned them even though I got a killer deal on them. The main reason is the music is so separated out that it lacks the cohesiveness that all headphones, and speakers have. I found them hard to judge how the music would sound on with car speakers or headphones. A 2nd pair of monitors or great headphones like the Focal Clear Mg's would be necessary with the ATC's. The Focal Trios provide good separation but at the same time have a cohesive sound to them as well. Also switching from Twins to the Trio's was much easier as they have that familiar Focal character. My mixes on the ATC's were way out there and it would have taken me months to get use to their sound in my room. The bass on the Trios is very solid and they go deep. They improved the bass driver compared to the original Trio 6's which were more of a rounded bass sound. The new Trio 6's have faster transients and lower lows. The tweeter is much improved over the original Twins as well. Not as smooth as the ATC's but they are not fatiguing at all. These monitors look better than the ATC's and weigh less. The 2 way and 1 way are fun to listen to, but I prefer my Yamaha HS 5's as the mids are not pushed forward like the Trios are. If these speakers are out of your price range but you want this type of Focal quality, I strongly recommend checking out the new Focal Twins which have a similar tweeter and improved design that the new Trios have. The Solos are great too, but I prefer the deep bass of the Twins over the Solo's.

Hi -- when would you choose the Twin 6 over the Trio 6 and do each of these need a Sub (sub12) OR would you go for the Trio 11 BE (larger room) unless in a very small room (14x14 or smaller). Room size -vs- Speaker size AND closeness to front wall. Some of us just have to place our monitors ultra close to the front wall - most folk with space can place the spkrs where they want -- but for the rest of us choice is limited - particularly if we do not want to use in-wall spkrs (which can be great in themselves).

first case: Let's say they cost the same, would you chose the Trio ST6 or the Trio 11 BE in a medium sized fully treated room. No decay longer than 300ms down to 30hz. seond case: the trio 6ST are new and cost 4.800 bucks, the trio 11s are 5 years old in good condition and cost 4.200. What would you get? A real scenario and I am grateful for your opinion.

Are these a bit compromised in output power? 115dB SPL and 250 RMS. I have the Hedd type 20 mk11 and they are 120db SPL and 900 RMS and in a treated room they are just about loud enough, or am I missing something? Great videos by the way.

So the drivers in all of these Focal speakers are ultra efficient, meaning they take less power to reach a particular SPL. These are way loud and I cannot imagine anyone needing more.

Nice to hear what you had to say on these as i am trying to decide on the New Trio 6 or the Trio 11... I have a 9.1.6 Atmos system based around the new st solo 6 and twin 6 but always planed on moving the twin 6 to rear and putting the trio 11 as the main. But have Questioned using the Such a big Main in the Atmos system :( Any thoughts ?

So one of the biggest considerations for me between the trio 11 and the trio 6 in an Atmos rig, since you will have a sub anyway, is monitoring distance. The trio 11s really need to be like at least 6 foot away before they start coming together into a cohesive picture as aware the trio 6 start working somewhere in the 4 foot range. Obviously, there’s the price to be concerned with, and physical space requirements. But monitoring distance would be my biggest concern in Atmos. I’m personally going with 3 trio11, and solo six everywhere else for 9.1.4.

It’s a massive difference putting broadband absorbers on your desk and measuring. The comb filtering is massive in comparison, yet I think our ears get used to it over time. Probably the congestion you were experiencing?

Yes, there’s also certainly some comb, filtering and reflections, happening off the consul as there are with every monitor on every consul. Good call!

Have the same monitors, once you hear the level clarity on these it’s like losing your hearing virginity. Eventually sold mine and went with the Genelec 8341, they are 1 notch more clear then the trios.

the new series is really good. they finally defeated their wadded-up, uninformative hi-fi sound and made a clear transient really studio monitor. the new series has reached a level with ADAM S, which is the best for its money.

I think 15 foot long would do the trick. The important thing in that scenario in my mind is the listening distance to the monitors. You really need to be like 4 1/2 feet or more from these monitors in the listening position in my opinion.

What would you say to someone that has just started working on their first few real mixing jobs from paying customers but is constantly thinking “I need the perfect setup, perfect speakers, perfect treated room etc”, obviously everyone has to started somewhere but it’s so frustrating that there are so many improvements needed!

I would say acoustic treatment is the single most important thing. Monitors are the second most important thing. And literally everything else comes after that. You can’t mix or fix what you can’t hear.

I had the Focal Twin6 with the matching sub….the forward midrange was just too much. I tried the Trios as well and just could not get used to the midrange. Tooo forward for me. I really wanted to love the Focals because they are so beautiful and have such a great reputation…. The midrange was just too much for me. I ended up with two sets of Genelec monitors…..which visually are meh…….but like you said earlier, I don’t have to think of them….

All these higher end monitors like ATC, Barefoot and Focal push the mids forward so you can hear all the details in the busy area better. You get to hear reverb tails and front to back on your mixes much better. But the negative thing is the music does not have a cohesive sound. So you need a 2nd pair of monitors like the Yamaha HS5'S to give you the idea how all the tracks blend together. But I get what your saying. I returned the ATC SCM 25a's for that very reason. Plus the bass only goes down to 47. The Trios on the other hand go down to 35 hz

@@revelationsoundstudio The SCM 25 were on my shortlist for a long time, but I did not pull the trigger on them for that very reason. A monitor that expensive should have that lower end reach that they just don’t. It’s disappointing I think. The Genelec monitors don’t seem to get much love online but At least half of my business is guest Engineer is coming into the studio and not a single one of them has ever complained about them and they keep coming back. Granted, my monitors aren’t the lower and stuff but some of the upper and stuff and I gotta say the mixes transfer a really well, and I can listen to them for a long period of time without getting ear fatigue. In my touring concert sound systems I used to use TAD 4001 and 4002 hf drivers that. We’re also beryllium, (I absolutely love the sound of beryllium!) The high frequency extension is exceptional and it’s clarity is second to none. Because of that, I really wanted the Focals to be my thing. It just didn’t sound anything like the beautiful TAD drivers I was so used to. I really believe that the Focal monitors are the most beautiful looking speakers on the market. And I am really happy that they achieve as much success as they do. I think I’m just spoiled. But that’s OK. I love my current monitors and my results are great. I just wish they look like the Focals!
