53:11 - you are correct. There are *TWO* Chinese dialects used in this film: Evelyn speaks Mandarin to Waymond (and Joy), and Cantonese to her father. _Nü Pengyou_ is Mandarin. _Luoi Pengyao_ (or however you phoneticize it) is Cantonese. Both are written as, 女朋友. Girlfriend.

At 51:30 where you are commenting on how to say girl friend in Chinese. There are two Chinese languages spoken in this movie. Mandarin and Cantonese. Evelyn only speaks Cantonese to her father and only speaks Mandarin to Waymond. So you are hearing Evelyn say girl friend to her father in Cantonese, whereas you probably only know the pronunciation in Mandarin.

your pronunciation was spot on! only there were also conversations in Cantonese between grandpa and mum. when you were repeating after what Joy tries to say to her grandpa in the begging of the movie, I was wowed, thinking you just randomly nailed all the tones...

I wish I had people to practice with. I went to the asian market the once just to see if I could pick up on anything anyone was saying, but everyone still talks too fast for me sometimes. I can read and write it better than I can speak it and understand it.

Showing off, aren’t we! Interesting you claimed to have “mastered” a rather difficult and totally different writing system while your speaking skills still needed improving! Do you just like leaning new languages or what? I mean you sorta started leaning German some time ago?

@@first8956 I love languages. I just never finishing learning them. I can speak and understand German WAAAAY better than Mandarin. I was dating a girl who had family there and I wanted to impress them, and then Dark came out and I was like ITS A SIGN. As for claiming to master the writing system, it's more just I love writing the characters. It's the artist in me. I've even by trying to learn proper stroke order.

When I watched this alone in my room one night on a whim, I was having a grand old time, enjoying the action and the comedy, absolutely having a blast. Then the final half hour happened. I have not sobbed that hard watching a movie… ever, I think. The story of a mother and her queer young adult child driven apart by inability to communicate properly and love turning into stress and resentment… it fucking got to me, man. That’s exactly what I’m going through with my own mother, for similar reasons. It hit me harder than any other story exploring that subject ever has. Instantly skyrocketed the movie to one of my top five movies of all time. Top three, even.
@BarteNERDS2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I even said that if this movie was about a father and son I would have been a fucking sobbing puddle on the floor by the end. Instead I ended up relating to Waymond the most when he says, "I don't know what's going on, but I feel like it's all my fault." I still think about that line. Honestly, it's the one line I remember the most from the movie. Because of how broken he looks when he says it because fucking christ, I get it.

Just watched your reaction. You were wondering why the pronunciation of "girlfriend" sounds differently. The reason is Evelyn speaks Cantonese to her father, and she speaks Mandarin to Waymond. So it was the Cantonese version of "girlfriend" in the film.
