/ crackingthecryptic
** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
Today's puzzle is a MUST. It features a hybrid of sudoku and a logic problem called Chocolate Banana (yes, seriously) and it's absolutely amazing. RockyRoer - TAKE. A. BOW!!
Play it at the link below:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Draw cages such that every cell in the grid is in a cage. Cages must be entirely shaded if they are rectangular in shape, (a square counts as a rectangle) and they must be entirely unshaded if they are not shaped like a rectangle. No two shaded cages can touch orthogonally and no two unshaded cages can touch orthogonally. Digits in cages cannot repeat. Numbers given as clues in the grid represent the sum of the cells in the cage containing that clue - not all totals have been given.
** NEW GAS PACK IS OUT **
The new GAS pack is out on Steam for PC here:
store.steampowered.com/app/21...
It's already out on Android and App Store. 60 original puzzles by Sam Cappleman-Lynes, Clover and Philip Newman!! Earn party hats and dinosaurs with these brand new puzzles!

There really was something magical about how the last part of the puzzle unfolded - in my solve, I had marked a huge swathe of 79 pairs stemming from the bottom rows, and the left side of the grid had more pencil marks than Simon would be comfortable with, but then suddenly they all resolved down to a bunch of tightly coupled pairs, and from there everything collapsed into the final solution. Absolutely gorgeous puzzle with some wonderful logic (and my solve time of 47m49s compares favourably to Simon's for once!) For those not familiar, chocolate banana is, as well as being an interesting logic puzzle, a popular "souvenir" food in Japan, particularly associated with Tokyo. Usually it isn't fresh banana but instead if you visit a tourist spot you can buy choco-banana-flavoured cookies individually wrapped in a box so that you can buy it and share them with your coworkers, family or visitors.

41:34 for me. That was fun, and I liked that puzzle! I'm surprised it took that long since when I was early in I thought it'd go quickly, but I'm still happy with the time spent. I started the puzzle with the other part of your favorite domino: the 4 must always be Chocolate (I used the same color scheme), because it must either be 4 or 1/3. Then 7 is a banana, meaning it's a 1/2/4, thus the 4 is a 2 cell chocolate with a 3 in the central box. Tried again the next day and got it in 29:36.

The strange thing is that I approached the bottom three boxes from the opposite direction. Once I had the 2-3-4 in the middle boxes, I spent a long time trying to figure out how the 15 cage was shaped, given the inability to have more than one of those three digits in it, and that led to filling in the colors for the whole right side of the grid. Once I had box 9 colored, I also worked out that the 40 cage needed an 8 in box 8, and that forced the 8 cage above it to be two cells. The final part I had left was a 2x2 region where I needed to fit extra cells for the 11 and 31 cages. This is a puzzle that really lends itself to multiple solution paths.

Love that 4-7 domino. 4 can only be 1 or 2 cells, either of which is a rectangle so the 4 has to be chocolate/rectangle, and 7 has to be yellow/NON-rectangle and 3-cell. And that means the 7 has to have a 1 and the 4's 1 has to be in the next 3x3 over. Beautiful.

This came together handsomely, thanks. Not sure the idea of chocolate bananas appeals - it sounds like something our friends across the pond would come up with.

Always nice to see things work from the other direction. Figuring out the 8 in Box 8 had to be length two, because the 40 and 13 filled out box 9, but did not go into box 6, and thus the 40 had to grow into box 8, but only could take one space before it reached length 8 and thus that extra space had to be an 8, disallowing the 8 cage to be size one, I thought that such beautiful logic. I guess finding more of the 31 cage first was easier...

The four clue must always be chocolate, even without the seven next to it. It's either a 1x1 box of 4, or 2x1 box of 3 and 1. But being near the seven does expand it even further.

I forgot bananas have to bend. Only made sure chocolate is rectangular but also allowed rectangular bananas in my logic. solved more than half a digit and painted all of the grid except for 12 cells in bottom left corner where that distinction was required to disambiguate the puzzle. Got watched the video and the first time bendy bananas came to play I facepalmed and finished the puzzle. Still one of my favourites! the way the cages expand and slowly fill the grid is so satisfying.

At 37:47 this fixes a 4,8 pair in column 5 of box 2. You unfortunately use the erroneous 6 pencil marks at 44:00 to allege a 468 triple in column 5 across boxes 2 & 5. Then just a few seconds later at use it to place a 5 in r6c5. Thankfully, it seems to still solve. Seriously though brilliant as always and way beyond my skill set at the moment. Though, I almost always learn new logic with every puzzle. I will say to RockyRoer amazing setting and a brilliant puzzle. Please make Simon solve more. ;-)

Wow. RockyRoer contributed this triumph today and still found time to help the rest of us with our puzzles over on discord. It's like that scene in Superman where he saves the world three times and ends his day by rescuing a kitten from a tree.

i found the 'every cell in the grid is in a cage' rule a tad confusing.. took a while for me to realise that a single brown cell is a valid square cage, so not every cage has to have at least two cells in it. which made for a couple of frustrating minutes :) anyway, fun puzzle!
