Based on recent comments I felt it was appropriate to respond to a few points: 1) I’m not claiming Ken Anderson is better than Montana, of course. The thumbnail is hyperbole based on the opening clip in the video. I should have been clear within the video or just had a different thumbnail all together, so apologies for that. 2) It was also clear to me that Ken Anderson was well known when I was researching. I even mentioned how his name kept coming up. The title is not to be taken too seriously. 3) Now, this will apply to all of my videos. I don’t want to ever give the impression I am some kind of expert on the sport. Many of you grew up watching the game. I am from the UK, so I didn’t. I only discovered the sport in 2012/2013. I’m sorry if it bothers some of you that I’m young. What can I say. I understand the game has changed a lot, but it’s all I really know. I’m not a historian. These players never get mentioned when I watch games. Only the obvious ones do (Montana, Rice, Elway, etc), so I learn about this stuff through researching myself. I want to stress I’m no expert. I get things wrong all the time. But I enjoy the game, I like researching, and I hope to provide a unique spin in my videos. I will continue to strive and improve every video. Feedback and criticism is always noted. It helps me. Based on some of your comments I thought a proper response was warranted and I’ve got stuff to improve on for future videos. Can’t change my age though. Sorry for the lengthy comment. Thank you for your time and God bless.

Ahh grasshopper. You have much to learn about American football. I would suggest learning about Bengals and Ken Anderson. Very under rated. Bengals have to fight for everything because they have a smaller market. Same way with the Reds. Smaller markets have to find the money to pay all the players. Coming from a small school, Anderson lacked a platform and being found was a miracle.

Before last December's Steelers-Bengals game I was listening to an interview with Kenny Anderson. He told a story about playing the Steelers at Three Rivers. Late in the game he got sacked by Mean Joe Greene. While Mean Joe was laying on top of him, he said to Kenny - "Ken, we always have beer in the locker room after the games. Why don't you come over and have a beer with us." So Kenny did and while he was there, drinking a beer and talking football with some of the Steeler defensive players, the press came in the locker room. Thinking it wouldn't be a good idea to have the press see Bengal-Steeler fraternization, they went into the shower, which wasn't being used by this time, and waited for the reporters to leave. They eventually left and when Kenny went back the Bengals locker room, the team had already left. He missed the team flight and was fined $500 or something like that. It's funny that fans tend to really hate rival teams, but it seems like with the players, they are more like brothers in arms, even though they wear different uniforms. Well, there may there may be a little hatred among the players too.

Don't be ridiculous, he was not elite. If he was elite he would be in the hall of fame. He was a good QB for his era, I would put him in the same boat with Joe Ferguson, Joe Theismann, Steve Bartkowski. Ken Anderson had a 91-81 record as a starter and he completed less than 60% of his passes.
@RodericSpode
@RodericSpode 2 ай бұрын
@@StevenC32 Ken Anderson played on a lot of teams with very little talent, which is why his teams winning record was 91-81. It's not a bad record, but not as good as someone like Terry Bradshaw or Joe Montana who played almost their entire careers surrounded by elite talent. Anderson played from 1971 to 1986. His career completion pct is 59.3. Here's a list of all the HOF QBs whose careers overlapped Andersons, along with the year they entered the league and their career completion percentage. If you are judging him by completion pct, you are making the argument that he belongs in the HOF. Sonny Jurgensen 1957 - 57.1 Len Dawson 1957 - 57.1 Fran Tarkenton 1961 - 57.0 Joe Namath 1965 - 50.1 Bob Griese 1967 - 56.2 Ken Stabler 1970 - 59.8 Terry Bradshaw 1970 - 51.9 Dan Fouts 1973 - 58.8 Joe Montana 1979 - 63.2 John Elway 1983 - 56.9 Dan Marino 1983 - 59.4

When the Bengals were in the AFL (the league's last team to join in 1968) they had a quarterback named Greg Cook. He was the 1969 AFL rookie of the year. Sadly, injuries cut his career short, and is considered the greatest player you've never heard of. In 2012 he died in poverty and obscurity

Ken Anderson was well known and well thought of playing for the 1970s Bengals. I thought at first this video might have been about Greg Cook, who I saw play twice. Before his terrible injury, I saw him pick the Chargers apart with well over 300 yards passing and 3 passing TDs. After his rotator cuff injury, I saw him come back injured and still lead the Bengals in pinning the only regular season loss on the Raiders. Cook is the greatest QB that was only healthy for 2 1/2 games of his short career. He might have been in the same class with Johnny Unitas and Tom Brady. Coach Paul Brown compared him to Otto Graham, who many believe to be the best QB ever when compared to the peers in his era.

Played in a small market. He probably would have been remembered by more if he retired after his neck injury in 1983 instead of fading away for the next 3-4 years. Also, the transition from a Bill Walsh offense to older offenses then to a Lindy Infante offense in 80-82 took time. He won the passing rating title two times w/ Walsh and then two times with Infante. That was two totally different offenses. Infante had much more of a power run game and more vertical passing.

Great Video. To expand on this, George Seifert is one of the greatest coach of all time. Seifert was the DB coach for the 81 niners that shut Anderson down in the SB, with a secondary of three rookies and a second year player. Lott was still a corner. Anderson did not throw a TD in the SB. He then became DC and shut Marino down in the SB. In 87, as DC, the niners did not give up a TD against the Bengals in the rematch. Once he became HC, the niners scored 49 and 55 points in offense without boy genius Walsh who averaged mid 20s in three Super Bowls. Walsh, the media darling, was nowhere near the coach that Seifert was.

Criminally underrated. I always go with the conceit of imagining him on another HOF'er's team and vice versa. For example, swap Terry Bradshaw and Ken Anderson. Does Anderson win a bunch of Super Bowls, or does Bradshaw still rise to the top and bring those Bengals teams to four Super Bowls? I'd put my money on Anderson. Same thing with Stabler and Anderson (and Stabler was my first QB hero before Montana!) As much as I believe Roger Craig should be in the HOF, Anderson is probably in line just ahead of him.

Ken Anderson WAS VASTLY UNDERRATED. Obviously you're not A Bengals 🐅 Fan. Played At Augusta, A Real Powerhouse 😂. Smart, Tough, Really Gritty player. I was a Bengals fan in 1978, age 6. My brother Steve loved The 49ers . So you know we had some fun watching Those Super Bowl Matchups. He probably had a little more fun than me . I remember Ken , Anthony Munoz , Ickey Woods James Brooks SD basically gave him away for Pete Johnson power back. We had the Super Bowl won ,until we dropped the int in the end zone. Louis Breeden had it but then he didn't. Next pass to John Taylor TD 😢 . People forget or don't know. The West Coast Offense Was in Cincinnati before it landed in SF. The Head Coach was on The Bengals team before SF. So basically The West Coast Offense took off from Riverfront Stadium. I watched the AFC Championship in Riverfront 🏟️. 35 Degrees Below ZERO ,Wind Whistling. I believe The River Was FROZEN. Way before All The Cold Weather , Moisture Wicking Technology came in. You can't hardly wear anything under your pants, except maybe thermals or pantyhose 😂 . We busted up SD that day. Apparently SD weather ☀️ doesn't really help on the Ohio River In January. But Ken Anderson Was A Really Good QB on a not really good team mostly. We should have won when Louis Breeden had the 🏈, but he dropped it. WRs have better hands than DBs. I know, I can replay it in My Mind 40 years after it happened. The Tim Krumrie leg injury was almost as tough to watch as Joe Theisman injury . GRUESOME. Tim Krumrie is Also underrated. Tim Could Lock Up A Center and make it look easy. Really Strong NT. They had no real answer for Tim . After He went down ,the fat lady started warming up. I knew even as a child , when the game shifted. Hard to believe, but 🏈 used to be Fun. Forrest Greg was a good coach. James Brooks was the Second Best Back from Auburn behind Bo. I should know, I'm Also A BAMA FAN. 😂 BO JACKSON WAS NOT MY FAVORITE PLAYER . He tore us a new one just about every time we played Oakland. Look up his stats against Cincinnati. 😮. I left off Boomer after He thru us under the bus for The Stealer Debacle. AJ McCarron had us going pretty good for a backup QB. Ken was better than Boomer . Tougher, old school, Respected. I didn't even bring up David Fulcher . He wouldn't be Able To play Today. Too Tough. Nobody Ran Over David Fulcher, Not Bo, Not Earl, Not Eric Dickerson. See how many times Dave got it , not many. He would hurt most RBs today. Players ARE Not like Lott, Atwater, Cecil, Browner. Why the game SUCKS When you compare eras. Now we have overpaid KZbin Stars that can't play through a headache. Shout out To Sam Wyche, Another Very Good Offensive Coach. Famous for Several Things, My Top 2 Putting a Zerox copy in the Refs Pocket so he could see what Sam wanted him too. You don't live in Cleveland, 😂😂😂 Awesome going down Memory Lane.

St louis boy here. Warner did not degrade because of injuries in 2002, he degraded because of injuries to marshall faulk. He lost his job to rookie mark bulger. He had the luxury of having 2 hof quality wide receivers in the prime of their careers, plus faulk. Trent green was a much better qb and you would never heard of warner if greene didnt get hurt in preseason 0f 1999. Warner went to the giants and was terrible. He then moved to Arizona, with two hof quality receivers in the prime of their career, who took them to the superbowl. Ken anderson was always one of my favorite qbs growing up. True Ken Anderson llikely the best QB of the 70s. I’m a cowboys fan and Staubach was Capt. America and is Capt. America still. But Anderson did as good as Staubach w/ o possible the best team ever in 1978. Dallas couldnt whip the physical teams very often but that was due to Landry.

I enjoyed your video, this far. One stat I would like to touch on in regards to the QB position. There is a current top 100 pick 6 list. Patrick Mahomes is on it! Brett Favre is definitely in the top tier! Brady, both Manning's, Elway, Marino, Young, Montana, Moon, Warner, 2 time MVP Jackson.... Etc, etc, ....Not Josh Allen! Just saying! Punt picks are a thing!

Many people’s first baseline judgement of hall of fame worthiness is whether or not the player won a Championship/ Super Bowl. That’s just lazy thinking.... Warren Moon, Dan Marino. Clearly both are hall-worthy, without a doubt. Need I say more? It is hard as hell to win a Super Bowl. Out of all of the teams in the league each year, everything has to align perfectly - you have to have benefit of a good front office, the injury factor must fall your way, if whether or not you have at least an above average to dominant defense, etc... And stats are very misleading as well. There are so many different factors that go into stats - what kind of system you were in, Did your defense consistently get you more offensive possessions therefore providing more opportunity for bigger numbers for the offense, etc. And let’s not forget the marketing aspect- was the player in a smaller market with far less hype, promotion, prime time visibility than that of his peers? (I.e.- popularity contest)? In my opinion, the true measurement should be simplified- Was the player being considered among the best of his peers for the era in which he played? Was he as good or arguably even better than his peers who are in the hall of fame? I realize you can’t let everyone in or else you would water down the specialness of the award. But in my opinion, Ken Anderson absolutely was among the best of his peers in the era in which he played. I will back up my position here with an easy comparison- Dan Fouts. Go to any site with stats and compare Fouts and Anderson side-by-side. Then explain to me how Fouts is in an Anderson is not. Fouts was a great player and he belongs. I would argue that Ken Anderson was every bit as good and possibly better than Fouts. Remember my criteria above?.... what system did Fouts play in?- Air Coryell’s pass-happy, air-raid -type downfield vertical attack. That afforded Fouts far more opportunities to pile up numbers. Did he win a Super Bowl? - No. Did he make it to a Super Bowl? - No. If you go by my opening sentence, by that standard, then Dan Fouts should not be in the Hall of Fame. But I am not arguing that Fouts should not be in, I’m arguing that Anderson is every bit and possibly even more worthy. Ken Anderson was a great quarterback.

You nailed it!! But he was not far from Montana quality. Joe is regarded as much better but 3 of his 4 championship teams were led by the defense. When you compare all the great quarterbacks to the average quarterback of their own era and then to each other Joe is the 13th best since 1947 and Kenny is 15th.

@@chrisbacos My mistake. Stabler did win in 74. Really his only exceptional year. He threw 30 more Int's than he did TD's in his career. Bradshaw did win Super Bowl MVP as most Super Bowl winning QB's do. His stats still don't match Andersons. He threw almost as many INt's 210 as he did TD's 212 and over 5000 less yards despite having offensive weapons like Lynn Swann, John Stallworth, Franco Harris. All HOF'rs. In any event Bradshaw won 4 Super Bowls so he is an automatic HOF'r.
