Oh this is wonderful. Thank you for this. I have been listening to Whitney's performances of this song and also You Give Good Love a lot this year. For me, this was Whitney (90/91) at her absolute best. Her vocal is routinely phenomenal and she's so experienced at performing that she is able to ad lib at any time and in any way knowing that she will be able to find her way back to the song. My two favourite performances of this song are of course SNL where her vocal was at 100% (I don't think you could say that about Jay Leno). The knee bend to pull out a growly 'fills me up' at the end isn't replicated anywhere else and it's the real bluesy side of Whitney coming out. This was her first time on SNL and the pressure would have been on so to be able to deliver in this way would have been hugely satisfying. My absolute favourite though is Arsenio. She loves doing this show. She is relaxed right from the start when she yells from behind the screen: 'I'm ready baby.' It's nice to see her this happy and in the moment. Her stagecraft is spectacular here. The way she transitions the mike from one hand to the other is flawless and beautiful. When she sings 'sing it for me y'all' at the end of the song, she's recalling her days singing solo with the church choir. In moments like this Whitney connects a huge mainstream audience with something both deeply personal and an almost universal experience for a lot of the community she was raised in. Wonderful and eternal. Thanks to you and of course to Whitney Elizabeth Houston.
