Although this idea may seem bizarre. Could the Class 769 conversion of some units allow the Class 319 to live on with some preserved railway lines in the future via diesel mode without the need for OHE? That would allow a Class 319/769 to be preserved without too much of a big expense. Maybe Porterbrook could donate one or two to a heritage railway without scrapping them all in the long run. I would like to preserve one myself someday as I have many fond memories of using them in London when they were 319's.

Kind of reminds me of a class 73 electro diesel but instead of a locomotive they added hopefully eco friendly diesel motors into them classic 319s allowing it to use electric or diesel like the Class 800s

the here in south wales have been made into Frankenstein's... had there overhead wires ripped out... added these horrible diesel engines, but left the motors... which still take me back to my morgate journeys...

At its core, the conversion work involves the fitting of a powerpack containing a Diesel engine and associated alternator underneath each of the driving trailer vehicles, which drives the existing traction apparatus via the DC bus along with a new return cable. The engine adopted is the MAN D2876, capable of generating up to 390 kW (520 hp) per engine; this powerplant is furnished with a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system to reduce NOx emissions. Wikipedia. Also I'm not sure how green the electricity in Wales is, seeing as a Coal train went by on it's way to a power station in another Class 769 video.

@@Martindyna It makes me wonder if the Cummins QSK19 or the Caterpillar C13's would have been better for the Class 769's being rated at 750hp? That would be a combined total of 1500hp for the diesel mode and enough oomph to power them up steep hills as well providing more hotel power for the traction motors.

@@BritishRail60062 You may be right provided they'll fit and aren't too heavy and are as green. Hotel power is for the AC (if applicable), lighting & kitchen equipment (if applicable) etc. btw, not for the traction motors.
