I am Brazilian, and about in year 2000 we have just got cable TV at our home, when I saw my pre-teenage boys addicted to a TV show, that I thought it was quite complex for them to understand - in English with English subtitles - but that was it, The West Wing. I immediately got addicted too, it was a politics and history class for me, I was interested in how the US Government works, the inside of the White House, the characters in the Bartlet administration were my heroes. Later on we bought all the DVDs, I have them to this days, I can play them in my laptop with an external drive, and from time to time I watch some episodes. Good time were those! Congrats, Aaron Sorkin, you’re a genius!Martin Sheen, you’re a great actor, congrats for the fantastic job you did as a Nobel Prize winner and President Bartlet!

It was a father to son tradition. I know in todays woke world that is hard to imagine. The symbolism here is that he had no sons of his own but Charlie who had grown up without a father and lost his mother had earned the trust, respect and love of the president. The Bartlett daughters would have been well aware of the family tradition and I would say all would have approved of their fathers choice. Really is a beautiful story line that was woven through the episode.

The father-son relationship is a distinct one. And it should be noted that Bartlet didn't have a son and Charlie didn't have a father. It's a symbol affirming how they see each other. Also, it's his fucking knife. You give yours to whomever you like.
