She's pretty terrible in obvious ways, but also hilarious in a certain light. Most people have to be falling down drunk to be so unapologetically brash in their word choice. Monica's crisp, clear annunciation leaves no doubt, however, that she's stone-cold sober.

I have mixed feelings about Monica Phelps. I love her for her knowledge of the sport and her enthousiasm when she sees great gymnastics. But I hate the fact that she body shames gymnasts.

@@llamaface6229this was early 1990s Eurosport, judging by the top-right watermark, thus subtract 30+ years off 80. The logo did change to white/dark blue in 1994 (I used to religiously watch Moto GP there)

Yeah that was rough. And I hope that coaches would be a little more gentle than she was. However, I think she has a good point. Athletes have to take care of their minds as well as their bodies, so that the pressure of the moment doesn't break them.

I do like that she pointed out that someone that she thought looked heavy actually wasn't. However, it was extremely weird, and she fat shamed very skinny gymnasts all the time.

Sadly, she is merely vocalizing what was common sentiment for the time. The fact that it strikes us as so bizarre and inappropriate is kind of a testament to the progress that has been made.

She is a great commentator!! Makes interesting comments and doesn't criticize too much or too little and she keeps it human. I love when Sanne Webers was about to mount the beam she says "she's classy and she's original"

@Gift Horse Phelps retired years ago and lives in France, so it wouldn't have been her who commentated on Sanne Wevers. You're mixing her up with Christine Still because where "classy and original" aren't not necessarily things that Monica Phelps would say, they are *definitely* things that Christine Still does say!
