I hope Barshim brakes Sotomayor 2.45 meters (8 feet and one-half inch) 23 year old WR (in 1993) soon since high jumpers have a short career span or peak. Experts say the best years are from 22 to 29 years young. Since Barshim is 24 (1991) he still have some good years to brake it. He already cleared the second best jump ever of 2.43 M (7 ft 111⁄2 in) so all in all if he stays injury free he can do it, the power and technique is there now all he needs is his lucky Sotomayor day : - ) Thanks for sharing!

Man, if the bar had been at 2.45 or even 2.46 when he cleared 2.43, I think he would have been over it. The attempts at 2.46 were SOOO close, definitely made it look possible. It's been a long time since we saw anyone get anywhere near Sotomayer's mark. Barshim and Bondarenko were fantastic for the sport, both Gods of the discipline. Bondarenko also made creditable attempts at 2.46, but Barshim had the edge and came closest I think. To have both of them in the sport at the same time was fantastic. It will be a while before we see that again.

@42Tonyallen428 жыл бұрын
+Zaq I'm a college senior who's done D1 track for 4 years and I can tell you this: 6'1 is actually not horrible haha, Ive seen plenty of college athletes who can't even do that. Of course you should always work harder to get higher and I'm sure you will but be patient and let it come to you, work hard and don't get down on yourself for a second cuz high jump is 90% mental good luck!
@llamadogwillkillu8 жыл бұрын
agreed. i didn't get 6'1 till my junior year and still competed in college. just remember that high jump has the smallest noticeable improvement next to maybe the 100m. some people don't realize how much difference 2 inches can really make in high jump. just keep confident and train hard and u will do well. good luck.

I think even though Sotomayor cleared higher(barely) 2014 Barshim is still better all around in terms of consistency, rythem, and form. All the jumps were massive clearances of extreme heights.
@ibadrian9508 жыл бұрын
And he always get his hips above the bar on WR attempts but his problem is he always jump from slightly far out and comes down on the bar. Truly the GOAT
@TheMamspoker7 жыл бұрын
Agreed, Barshim will break the record in the next couple years. That WR of Sotomayor always looked a little suspect IMO - he hit the bar with his thighs coming down and gave it quite a smack. The bar bounced on top of the pegs and somehow stayed on (???). Bars aren't supposed to stay up there with that kind of blow.
One day, he will beat to world record. The only question is where and when ?

With all the cynicism about Qatar recruiting foreign athletes to represent it, it's worth noting that Barshim was born and raised in Qatar. I hope Barshim will make Qatari sports directors realize that there is talent at home, and resources would be well spent identifying and developing that talent instead of looking abroad.

@Della6244 жыл бұрын
I think the only reason Barshim hasn't jumped the World Record is because he is taking off so far away from the bar that he has the height but is always taking the bar down as he is coming down. His trainer should be teaching him to make a small adjustment to where he takes off and he'll do it and more :-)

2.43 = 7'11-2/3". A third of an inch under 8' and Barshim is the first jumper to clear that height besides Sotomayor (2.45, 1993!). Meanwhile there have been 4 who have cleared 2.42 but not higher, 1 who has cleared 2.41 but not higher, and 9 who have cleared 2.40 but not higher (including the amazing Stefan Holm, 2005). I still think two of the greatest jumps of all time was Partyka's clearing effort at 2.37 in Atlanta and Bodarenko's clearance at 2.35 in Moscow. Anyway, it's interesting that we have not seen any big clearances since 2014.
