While Roy is uncomfortable talking to men (standoffish in the locker room, resistant to asking the Diamond Dogs for help, and generally unwilling to play along with the other analysts in the TV studio), he’s really good at talking to women. He’s great with his niece, he’s extremely supportive of Keeley and Rebecca, and he has his whole yoga friend group that we haven’t seen on the show.

I don’t think he’s “uncomfortable” I do think he understands that men in a locker room are not “touchy feely emotive” types so he’s speaking their language. The way his relationship with Jamie develops is a perfect example of him connecting to and supporting a man as a teammate/friend (and the man he should have the most difficulty with because he is his girlfriend’s ex but he overcomes that in a way a lot of people just never do would have been easier to stay jealous and ignore Jamie).

When Roy hugs Jamie after Jamie's father insults him in the locker room, the first time I saw it - there was a loooooooooong pause after Beard ejected the elder Tartt from the locker room. And it dawned on me slowly, a line from the Wrinkle in Time book: "It has to be (him). It can't be anyone else." It takes a little bit to get used to driving one after driving a normal tractor style, but once you've got it, you've got it. If you're cutting lines, you have to be careful spinning the mower around or the back tire will dig a bare spot.
