Scott’s were smooth and powerful, made in limited quantities until just what seems a few years ago. Modernised but still traditional. Became the Silk Scott’s. You seem to have either a giant collection of videos/ films and a great knowledge of motor cycles. So a question for you . Who invented/designed the first positive stop gear change mechanism for motor cycles ? Any one else like to chip in ?. Thankyou for many interesting items. Brian W.

@@joepkortekaas8813 Actually I did say it was Velocette, we differed only in that my reference book says 1924 TT races, yous ay 1927. Well not going to argue. Just happy that we agreed initially.

I believe, and may be corrected, that Velocette used a positive stop mechanism in the 1924 Isle of Man TT races. The first successful such thing. Richard (Dick) Ifield manufactured a much improved version and this went into production in Australia and was fitted as a conversion to many different makes as a bolt on device. In fact many years ago I had an OHC single Norton fitted with such a device which connected to a shortened hand change gearbox lever. It was a small round alloy box separate from the main gearbox. Ifield came to live in the UK for a few years and worked in many places like Riley cars and Lucas etc. He eventually returned to Australia and set up an engineering works. Incidentally one of his sons was Frank Ifield who became famous as a singer world wide. ( I remember You .) etc. Yes I rode both 350 Mac and 500 Venom and yes the gearchange was good on both.

I've learned, that it was Harold Willis of Velocette who invented the positive stop foot gear change in 1927. As in so many cases, more than one person could've invented the same thing at approximately the same time, couldn't it?

Willis finished in the Junior, 350 class , of the IOM TT race. Under the heading of Velocette Positive Stop mechanism I found a really excellent clear photograph of the engine and gearbox unit. It was actually stamped number one 1927.

Joep Kortekaas Wikipedia. Under search for Velocette positive stop 1927/28. Lots of photos but one of engine gearbox closer. Photo shows footrests high and further back than standard. Somehow I got further and found write up. Think it said actual bike still a runner and in Australia. Quite a few articles listed at end of Wikipedia write up. Click on those and it takes you further. Pleased to meet you.

0:03 Not true. The first water cooled engine was the Hildebrand & Wolfmüller of 1894. The camera work is very bad, especially on the Jawa, much too shaky. The exhaust system on the Suzuki is not original. But a very nice video!

@M Bacon I fully agree with you, I simply pointed out, that the Scott was not the first water cooled motorcycle. And as regards Velocette, I think it was a real success, (I still fondly remember my Venom Clubman 500 cc) but it went down the drain in the seventies, together with the rest of the English motorcycle industry - a real pity, and a fiasco that, in my view, could have been avoided with more forward looking management.
