I tried asking my parents once about how much they make and bills etc..I was told it's none of my business. So yes, I wasn't educated in finance in any way. Went through a bankruptcy in 2005. My son is 7 and already knows how to save money better than both of my parents.

I had a financial plan laid out when I was 12 years old in 1973. My parents taught me these values. I found time to go to school, play sports and work my butt off at various jobs. I paid cash for my first car and paid for my own insurance at 16 y/o. I started my first fulltime job at 18 and invested from day one. Yes, I borrowed money for my first house and new car, but I paid everything off as quickly as possible. I have been 100% debt free since 1994, long before anyone ever heard of Dave Ramsey. I retired very comfortably at 60 and am enjoying a very happy, healthy and active retired life. I can attest that Dave is 100% correct in his approach. It's just a shame that he has to teach you instead of your parents. But I guess if we all listen and apply everyone wins.

When I got divorced after 3 decades, I decided to live like a college student until I had a good financial footing for my future. I didn’t have debt, but I also didn’t have any savings. I was told by friends it was irresponsible for a single woman to have a used car, and the inexpensive apartment I moved into close to work was in a bad part of town. My best friend refused to ride in my car (embarrassed), felt uncomfortable coming to my home for dinner (at the time my dishes came from a thrift store), and bought me pepper spray because she was worried about me walking into my apartment. I didn’t tell her at the time, but my marriage was a lot more embarrassing and dangerous than starting over. I understand why people overspend to keep up with appearances. I saved $40K during that season of my life but lost some friends.

I knew no English, because of my status at the time I did not qualify for any financial aid, I worked full time while going to school full time. Finished 3 degrees at a local community college. Went through the process to become legal through marriage, spent a year out of the US waiting for an immigration pardon, returned to the US, worked my a** off and continued my education. Was in debt all my adult life until earlier this year that I became debt free after my 2-year debt free journey. Now I make six figures, have a successful career and I know for a fact that I couldn’t have done this outside of the US. Regardless of my education, in my home country I would have never been able to get all the opportunities I received in the US. How funny. Dave Ramsey is a Christian who subscribes, as do I, to the notion that everything - finances included - belongs to God. He gives to us out of His abundance. So once we start living with this reality, it frees us up to see finances as a gift from God; it creates a paradigm of thankfulness instead of selfishness, as the Bible talks about the love of money being the root of all evil.
@elisegothlix118310 ай бұрын
@mwilging oh I gathered all of that, except there is the part where Jesus would shake his head at that Ramsey truck if he existed today. Selling just doesn't seem like an easy fix all, even tho it would fix my problem if I was able to sell
@rebekahdecavit235410 ай бұрын
I think his mindset is to cut your losses and sell for what you can get. He says the same thing about selling your a car you can't afford, even if you get less for it than you owe, use the money from the sale towards the debt and just work to pay off the difference with time. You'll pretty much end up paying for something you don't have anymore, but you'll pay it off quicker (and probably spend less on it) than you would have if you kept the car.
@ethanshy28010 ай бұрын
Well if you can’t afford it, you’re going to lose it either way. Better to do it from a position of power. Not sure if the situation, but the cost to sell mostly is paid after the sale. You’ll likely need money for repairs, but those are negotiable. Moving costs. You’ll also get back some escrow money. Just do a search of the costs to close in case I forgot. But if this is the case, the sale will happen eventually anyway. You don’t want it to be through foreclosure and don’t sell it to one of the “we buy ugly houses” type companies. They will only pay 70 cents on the dollar for it.

Your financial advice is so bad that even the Wall Street journal made an article about how bad it is
@amireallythatgrumpy650810 ай бұрын
It's only bad for the 1% of the American population that can handle something advanced.

Those people under 40 saying his financial advice is bad are those who are in debt and not a millionaire lol

I know Dave won’t like this, but Buying Bitcoin each day since early 2018 has completely transformed and changed my life. I’m financially free because of it.

I’ve been dollar cost averaging my way into bitcoin but I think Dave avoids the subject and sticks with the basics due to having such a broad audience

Umm a prius can't walk with a truck. Why is this a question. And people carry hallow tips because of cities such as Chicago it evens the score tremendously. They take advantage knowing law abiding citizens won't travel illegally armed while they are armed to the teeth.

I agree. Buy a house in cash? Who has $900K in cash, for example, nowadays in my area in CA? Then no only else aside from the small amount of people that actually have that amount would be able to purchase a house. Pay off your mortgage in 15 years? My 30 year old mortgage is $2,690 a month (not including HOA, insurance and property taxes). Household income is more than $200K. Do you think that my husband and I can pay double ($5,380) while raising our small kids?… Maybe single people in our very expensive area in CA can do it. Not responsible and loving parents. He also would have told us to sell our rental. No, thank you. It helped us reach a 7 figure net worth (we have a nice amount of equity even with a mortgage on it).

Wealth building is not what 99% of the population should be thinking about.

@IrisP989 You may misunderstood Dave's principles. Dave suggests buying a house with cash only if you have the money. You live in a HCoL area, or you may need to downsize your house, or do both. A $200k income with a $300k home in other areas of the US is very good.

I’m “left, liberal” whatever you want to call me, there’s real a difference vs old conservative and what MAGA conservative is , so we can’t be blind to conservatives supporting someone who does things the wrong way, If he stayed a private citizen no one would give af, but he wants to be president, and not pay taxes and doesn’t do things how a public official should, and then y’all complain about paying more for stuff but support the capitalism that will soon bring fluctuating prices to your local fast food because of the time of day…so what world do you want to live in? someone who is cracking down on fees from companies and regulating insulin price works for me
