The Chrono Cross opening was so magical as a teenager. The violin is also amazing to this day. I had such a nostalgia trip playing the remaster when it came out. A lot of people say they don't like it, but I loved it. It has the most unique battle system to date. Legend of Dragoon also gave me the same feeling when I saw it for the first time. More recently my favorite opening/title cinematics are Tales of Vesperia and Ys Memories of celceta, it has a wicked gaelic music sound and electric violin.

This opening molded my childhood/teen days and lived rent free on my mind ever since. Despite its flaws and convoluted ending arc, Cross is a great game, and made me fall in love with Yasunori Mitsuda’s music. I remember showing Scars of Time to my music teacher, and having his mind blown away “this is from a video game?!?”.

The scene with Serge in Termina that doesn't appear in the game was confirmed in interviews to be made FOR the intro to help solidify Serge's personality - they thought we needed an action shot for him to establish that he was that kind of active protagonist.

Between this and FFVIII might be the two best opening songs of the PS1 era, and they both absolutely stand up to the test of time. If you preordered this in the US (for these threee titles: Chrono Cross, Threads of Fate, and Legend of Mama), you were given a mini OST with the opening song and 3-4 more in game tracks in a unique CD case that I still own all three of to this day, and I literally would play the CC disc on a loop for months on end as background noise while I studied in highschool

I usually save your videos to “watch later” to enjoy when I have the time but when I saw CC, you best believe I found a seat nearby and started watching! The underrated black sheep younger brother of the Chrono series! Love this game to death. Awesome analysis btw! Thank you for covering this. For anyone else watching and curious, please check out the remaster of this game! It did have a frame rate issue at launch but they patched it! Worth playing!

There's a very special place in my heart for this intro. I remember browsing the games at my local video rental store, always looking for games with ''Squaresoft'' written on them, and finding Vagrant Story. And finding out it came with a demo CD with the intro to Chrono Cross. I watched it multiple times and was amazed by it. I still watch it or just listen to the song regularly. It's really a wonderful experience.

It really is an amazing opening for a game. I went absolutely bonkers over it when I got to see this on a CD that came with Vagrant Story. Chrono Trigger was my all time favorite game. You can imagine my excitement over learning that there would be a sequel to it.

I would absolutely love an introspective breakdown / live reaction of Philip watching the Suikoden 2 opening cutscene. It's by no means full CGI, but it definitely sets tone & tells a story.

I totally agree. I loved FF openings, but Chrono Chross opening really left an impression on me.

I'm SO glad I played CC before Trigger because I was able to go into it with no expectations.... it's just a beautiful game, the soundtrack was just gorgeous, the emotions & feelings the game as a whole captures is just like "How did they do this?!?!" And this intro just exemplifies the whole feel of the game overall, it's so well edited and just gaaaaaahhh I LOVE this game!!

I really love this opening and the song certainly is a big reason. It's lived on my phone since it wasn't actually a phone but that rather sturdy gen 1 iPod. Another PS1 opening I've always been rather fond of is Parasite Eve's, again mostly due to the song used. Yoko Shimomura's another composer that often gets overshadowed by Uematsu but is another I've always really liked. I "blame" her for my love of piano mixed with electric guitar.

To me, Shadow hearts covenant has one of the most memorable openings. Although there are no dialogues during the scene, it manages to tell you everything you need to know at that moment. It also creates a sense of mystery while establishing the immediate conflict. One modern trailer I can compare to in terms what it manages to achieve without dialogue is that Witcher 3 cinematic trailer, where Geralt is following Yennifer's trails from the battlefield.

Chrono Cross is a special game, so I'm always happy to see some love for it! Mitsuda's legendary soundtrack alone is enough to make this intro one of the greats.

Chrono Cross is an absolute timeless classic and one of the best games on the PS1. How ever, alot of people probably gloss over this, but the Opening for chrono cross for the HD port is actually out of synce. The sound sychonization doesn't quite match the video. Check out the PS1 (original) version and you will see some differences, specifically that last quick flash of frames, is matched perfectly with the tempo beat played in the background. Just thought I would let you know. 🙂

Philip, first i want to say i love seeing your cosplays with your girlfriend, you guys are stunning! Second, love these a study's of games you do. I think an amazing series you should look at and analyze is the legacy of kain series, specifically the opening the soul reaver on the ps1, there is so much attention to detail in the slight facial expressions and the story throughout these games is so special and hard never been repeated in my opinion.

Chrono Cross' music and opening movie are incredible but my god was the game itself disappointing. The battle system was at least interesting but the story and the characters were AWFUL. Esp the 45 characters. I want to slap whoever made the decision to dump a ton of useless uninteresting characters into the game instead of focusing on a GOOD story with proper 5-7 characters. Now Phillip have you played Xenogears??
