I have developed a DIY RPI Hat you may be interested in. I’m using an Rpi-5, NVME drive, and my DIY hat. The hat has DC distro, dew heater, GPS, 5VDC for the Rpi, and a few other features I’m adding. I also have a complete Stellarmate OS setup for Rpi-5/NVME/kstars/ekos/ that boots from the NVME if anyone is interested.

I had so much trouble with Wayland and my monitor. I could not get it working and switched back to Astroberry but like you said it is no longer supported. I would love to buy a preloaded sd card that would just plug and play. What a great idea!

Excellent video. Agree with your assessment and tried to move from RPi4 to RPi5 myself and ran into all the challenges you mention, and as such stuck with the RPi4 for the past 2 weeks because I was preparing for the eclipse and did not want to change my setup. For the RPi5, I followed the recompile instructions you likely followed and that helped, but was not perfect for the RPi HD Camera. I am hoping to revisit this during the summer and get switched over, and like you, will move to a Pi.Hat for NVME. Thanks for the pointer about the cable as this has always been a weakness for the Pi. Good Luck on imaging.

Thanks! I'm glad I'm not the only one with issues. I hope things get sorted out to make installation easier. Otherwise, a lot of people will not be interested in the pi 5 or kstars, which would be disappointing.

I recommend ubuntu and installing phd2, kstars and others on your Pi. Being stuck with something less supported has just been annoying

Great video, I currently run Stellarmate on a Pi4 8GB from a USB3.0 external SSD. Recently tried NINA on a mini PC, but I see myself going back to EKOS / KStars.
@deepskydetail7 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing! How did you like Nina if you don't mind asking?
@poruatokin7 ай бұрын
@@deepskydetail So far I'm not as impressed as I thought I was going to be. EKOS / KStars is definitely better in some areas, NINA in others. I made a mini review on Cloudy Nights titled "N.I.N.A vs EKOS - I was Surprised" I think Stellarmate OSX built for Intel (mini PC) might be worth a look. The interactions I've had up to now with NINA "contributors" has been quite awful, condescending jerks basically.

Thanks for the insight! I've always been impressed by the kstars support and overall helpfulness in their forums by the developers.

Great video! definitely a very cool project! Might I suggest making a custom iso using something like Cubic and distributing that. I think that can make the setup process easier for people who might be interested. I'd be open to lend a helping hand in building this up more if you're thinking of it, always looking for cool open source projects to work on lol.

Thanks for the informative video! I'm still on an RPi4 with Stellermate on it. For some reason I was not aware of the existence of NVMe hats so I might give it a go :)
@deepskydetail7 ай бұрын
Thank you! If you try the hat, let me know how it goes with the Pi4. It might be smoother sailing since the 4 has been around longer. :)
@petekrz7 ай бұрын
The RPi 4 does not have the PCIe connector on it. I believe you can get a USB-NVMe adapter. I tried using a USB 3.1 flash drive on my RPI 4. That booted OK, but when I hot plugged a USB device in, the Pi crashed. I ended up going back to the SD card for booting.
@deepskydetail7 ай бұрын
Silly me! I forgot about not having a PCIe with the Pi4. I've seen the hats with the USB connectors for the Pi4 and got confused. I've always had trouble with getting enough power from the USB ports with Pis.

I tried this last year, the compiling took a lot of time, Kstars not working well under wayland. Also the indi driver for pi camera (imx290) is not ready on pi 5
@deepskydetail7 ай бұрын
Definitely sounds familiar, lol. I wish astro programs worked better with Wayland. And compiling everything took a long time for me too. At least X11 can be re-enabled in the settings. I hope the pi camera driver gets ready soon. Are you still using Kstars with the Pi 5 or have you switched to something else.

Yeah, they did a good job with it. I would definitely rate the Pi 5/5 if it was easier to install the software and drivers. There's a lot that can go wrong.

You should totally sell loaded drives and or loaded setups. 👍 I’d buy one.
@deepskydetail7 ай бұрын
Good to know! I'll look into it :) One of the things that makes me hesitant is if the drivers for some reason don't work for a particular setup. Hopefully it won't be a big deal though!
@nojaysimpson7 ай бұрын
@deepskydetail test what you can (in production of course) and load it with all the major players drivers is the only way I can think of. I guess if someone had an unusual rig, they’d need to let u know and maybe that’s the way. When/if you decide to sell a few get a list of the buyers current gear and anything on their radar just as a double check against a standard driver array.

I missed stick figure man. I'd like to escape the ZWO death grip ecosystem to use other cameras and get back some more advanced features like Nina has. Like you I got tired of packing my laptop out and leaving it outside all night.. protecting it from dewing up.. I bought a (useless) license for stellar mate for my pi4 8gb. I gave up trying to get it to work. I'll check out your guide with it and choose to either get an RP5+ssd or the mini pc Cuiv suggests.

Stick figure man will be back in my next video. I just couldn't figure out how to use him in this one, lol! It's nice not having to worry about a laptop all night. Do you know why stellarmate didn't work on your Pi4? I would say try to get kstars/ekos or stellarmate to work with the Pi4. If those don't work for you with the 4, then I don't know if it will be any better with the 5. As a side note, I did see an open source ASI Air OS clone somewhere. It might combine the best of both worlds. I'll try to find it and share it if I do.
