Great tips! I'm just a hobbiest and only done a half dozen full repaints & a few repairs. For the longest time I thought first "it has to be the gun - need a better one". Then it was "always use the recommended settings". Then it was "always use 50% overlap" (way too wide!). So all along there was a lot of cut & buff to fix poor results. Finally figured it out - realizing the obvious "look at the results and make whatever adjustments necessary to make it look right - duh! (including rate of travel)" And atomization is key. The cloud of overspray threw me off until I saw how much better the finish came out. Thanks so much for putting it all in easily understandable words and giving real examples! Wish your videos were available years ago when I started!

I honestly use some of the cheapest clears on the market I do not use flash times I shoot to wet coats back to back , no orange peel most of the times I do not have to buff out any of my paint jobs . FYI. I’ve gone the whole range of emotions on one single project. I’ve sanded the same panels so many times it’s not funny. I’ve said “this is the last time no matter what” way too many time, at least ten. Finally, some how, I finally got one side of this truck so good I won’t need to cut and buff, but now I have to redo the drivers side to be as good as the passenger side! Mercedes ML320, 040 Black, apparently pure black is the hardest color to paint, and it has done a number on me. I’ve got pictures of finishes I can’t believe I had to sand away because of flaws. But you have been the one to help me stay motivated to try again, do better, try harder, gather some resolve, and beat the odds. I’ve achieved glasslike, better than OEM very low orange peel in my garage, and that’s quite a feeling to look over and go, “I painted that!” And be proud. Thank you. Any criticisms were with love I assure you.

As a guy who painted for 36 years I would recommend NEVER using those silly on-gun regulators. Just open the on gun regulator all the way, pull the trigger and use the wall regulator to set pressure at gun. Then, take the regulator off. Using the wall as a baseline. They restrict flow too much and via the venturi effect can cause condensation in your air supply especially for at home guys.

I just painted my daughters 2004 Honda Civic EX in factory black pearl. I don't have a booth so it was basically a scuff and paint project in my driveway. I am a hobbyists at best. I used water based paint. It went on really good. The clear was a completely different story. Now I know what you mean by not letting off the trigger as to not have burst of clear. Since I was painting the whole car I did it in sections and did trigger on trigger off. I couldn't keep a wet edge if my life depended on it and even though some runs are OK because you can sand them out. These runs on the other hand looked foamy. So even when you leveled it you still saw what looked like a run stain so I had to redo part of the car. The clear also had a lot of orange peel, I mean a lot of orange peel. I used an Eastwood CC 500 gun. My results were horrible. When I did my sons 2002 Honda with a $59.95 Harbor Freight special HVLP gun my results were way better. I didn't have to cut and polish his car, but hers I spent a week cutting and polishing. It looks fine now but I've painted at least ten cars inside and outside of a spray booth and had phenomenal results. I don't know enough to pin point where I made my mistakes. I am the buck stops here guy because I have no one who could look at it and say ok you should have done this or that. I adjusted the gun to 22 PSI with a 1.4 tip. The gun also came with a 1.3 tip as well.

@ekitching I've got a differing way of thinking on your take, well, on the second half of your take that is. I'm a mechanic by trade but wide-eyed bushy tailed newb DIY paint & auto body enthusiast at home. This is something I've shyed away from for years mostly from straight-up intimidation (of the skill itself and of course the cost of getting set up). Anyway, I stumbled across Paint Society not long ago. I've learned so much and gained a ton of healthy confidence from digesting Brian's P.S. vids. I mean devopured is more like it. Many key videos I've rewatched many times just to really get that soaked in the brain application of some of the key points that Brian is so very good at laying out clear & concise & always on topic. Anyway I know we are in agreement there speaking of staying on topic, (Brian you are tha man!!) But I've noticed throughout the vids B does a good job of not only putting out knowledge that is applicable really to anyone from guys like myself to the production shops & all between, but he also I've noticed is constantly kind of hitting both ends of the spectrum on a lot of stuff when there really is a distinct diff in method or application or whatever between a big shop or little me at home, ie: "now for the guys at home, heres how you might do this..." is a regularly reoccurring lines I hear that I've found hella helpful. Not to say it all works everywhere, theres a lot that is run of the mill at a shop that could not be accomplished home in my garage, but alot of that distinction is really common sense, for the stuff thats not so obvious, Brian does a fine job of clarifying and simplifying shit. Like he says "Don't overthink it..." yes the dude is a top-tier pro and yes he does make a very difficult skill look super fucking simple, That is very true of most youtube how-to vids, watch apro making hard shit look easy, try n end up in the same ballpark. And thats super helpful sometimes to figure out a tough aspect of a job or to get unstuck. It's great. Paint Society is different, no all the Paint Society vids and the most expensive gear will never make anyone that good day 1, but somehow the man lays it out in a way that, for myself at least, leaves me thinking, not only "damn he makes that look easy (hella fun too)", but "ok that is something I can achieve", not just copy that result, but actually apply myself, the knowledge & skills so graciously offered, add a healthy portion of hard work, patience & a dash of failure to learn from, and I can learn to make it look easy, in a decade or so lol. IDK yeah this month, I've pushed thru the fear of catostrophic failure & succesfully straightened, repaired & laid a full custom paint job on what was my bat up looking sti. It's awesome. Beyond that, I've found a skill within the automotive trade that i'm truly pasionate about & excited for that I've never felt thru ten + years of busted knuckls turning wrenches n swapping parts & feeling more n more just mediocrity & discontent that I know would only get worse with time & inaction. Somehow tho, whether it was a dormant bug in my brain or maybe somethin brand new but somehow something led me to this channel & Brian lit an M-1000 under that sleeping bugs ass & blew that fucker to the stars & I'm riding shotgun. Interviewing next week for an apprenticeship program autobody paint collision. Turned 40 last month and I'm l;ooking to hang up my wrenches & starting over?!! Or in ten years that hole in my soul be big enough I'll crawl right in and die like ive watched my father do and so many once proud strong men who face mediocrity on the downhill side of life. I had no intention on going so long or certainly so deep in this, but I guess I just got something dif Brian's Paint Society channel. I'd hate for someone maybe younger or whatever that thinks they felt a spark or some shit to read one guys take and maybe dismiss that feeling for all the wrong reasons. Your thought & comment are valid and no less or more real than mine. Im a Geminitoot's and theres a thousasnds ways of looking at everything!!Heres two differing views of one KZbin channel, chose wisely and as with paint goes life, "don't overthink it"!

For anyone beginning/starting out (I am) I have to say he's spraying close to the panel and spraying quite slowly getting his coverage in two coats. It looks like a bit of a recipe for runs. I'm gradually getting to grips with technique. I see no great harm in going a bit easier with a thinner starting (1st) coat and an extra finish/last coat. With my recent experience I think you need to hone your technique a bit more slowly to start off THEN hopefully spray like he is.

Ideally, you need a vac system in your left hand to catch all the over spray. I pull through a water filter, then into a carbon filter and out of the shop area. I have been doing this with lacquer, epoxy and urethane with no spark issue, using a spark free vacuum, since 1996.... I also run it constantly during any dry sanding. .. In the shop I hang a spring retracted rv hose with a sacrificial air duct hose. The sacrificial 2 feet can be swapped out after every job, as they get dried paint that eventually flakes down onto the job. Duct tape hoses together.... I do not think that this should be mandatory. However, it is really nice to have for dust and fume cut down in field painting and shop painting. Point of capture is many orders more effective than general dust and fume systems.

Brian I’m self taught like you and for me to get a great flat finish is use the anest iwata supernova. I wasn’t able to achieve this guns finish without it. I spent a good decade trying to achieve a flat finish. To get the best finish to me is just to get the best gun period. I’ve spent huge amounts of money on air filtration, massive 1/2 inch air fittings, etc etc. all it took was a supernova!! I go back to a gti thinking I’m a better paint sprayer since getting the supernova but nope the finish from my gti doesn’t come close to my supernova.

Love your videos. Even the inflection in your voice was spot on when it needed to be. 2 questions: 1. It appears the door you painted already had scuffed basecoat (or perhaps the original paint on it). So you laid the clear on a dry, scuffed base. I've been told that I can only spray clear over a wet (flashed 15-30 min) basecoat. Is that true ? 2. I read somewhere in the comments that your day job is a teacher. Just wondering what you taught.

If KZbin actually starts putting ads on non-monetized videos by creators who never asked for them, that just goes to show how greedy this corporation can be. This thought is disgusting. KZbin is essentially making free money off small channels and not paying them a single penny. Yes, these are small channels, but since there's so many of them, KZbin will still make a huge profit off of this new policy. I don't care if KZbin hates us now, it must be said by someone. Can you do a video about the different tip sizes for clear, base and primers. There is so much to getting a good finish. As a diy’er and 100% beginner I can’t tell if the pressure is right or if enough paint is coming out.

another great video to help us DIYer's. Would never be able to try out different clears and guns. Have you ever tried the Dura Block Pro series guns including the micro detail gun? I was thinking of trying the tamco high impact clear for the motorcycle parts I normally work on.

U guys are gonna need a pretty big compressor to spray your vehicle because ur gonna run out of air before u even finish spraying a single panel. And will be waiting for the compressor to fill before u can start spraying again. If u take all the panels off u might be able to get away with a 5gallon compressor, i would also use an HVLP gun since it also uses less air. You will also need an water/oil filter to attachment to ur gun for contaminents so u dont get fisheyes, cost around $10

Eastwood makes a gun for small compressors. I used it with a 29 gallon Craftsman oil-less compressor..As long as it puts out about 5 to 6 cuft/min it will run this gun. Comes with a 1.3 tip and a 1.8 tip for primer. Kit runs about $170 but they put it on sale quite often. The gun isn't as air hungry as some of the regular HVLP guns but you have to plan your shoot because you will still run out of air if you try and paint the whole car. I've painted an entire side in one sitting without too much trouble but it was about at the limit of what my compressor could deliver. Since then I've upgraded to an 80 gallon 7.5hp two stage compressor so air isn't a problem for me now.

I going to start weighing the reducer, and using Tamco... I can't get the sikkens.... so I ended up with some runs and now I have to buff them out.. Ugh. It was my first car though so I'm not too upset, but I will be more precise from here on in....
