My first full car respray was a Mazda Artic Silver metallic. I watched a lot of videos, including Paint Society to study & take notes from the pros & the paint job came out beautiful. My personal project is an '86 Si which I'm respraying in of course in a solid red. I have sprayed some parts already and yes, solid red is an easy, fun to shoot color for beginners! I can't wait to start spraying again

@Paint Society Thanks Brian for all you do including enabling me to do my first paint job on a front end. One thing I came across was running paint at the base coat. Another nice video. I like how you mentioned how the area that was primered wasn’t as smooth to the touch as the other areas, but didn’t make a difference in the final feel after the clear-coat was applied. Most beginners, such as myself, would have panicked and maybe sanded it down unnecessarily.

Brian, just for folks that don’t paint much or perhaps first time, do a short video about what goes into paint to make something to spray and match. Of course this subject could be 3hrs, but slow it down, explain what starts with a paint code and the juices that go into the can. I mixed automotive Sherwin-Williams back in 1999 at UTI tech school to teach guys & gals how to paint. Your Red...starts with a little blue, a dab of white, touch of green, two reds and then the resins, binders & drying agents. I was service mgr at a boat dealer and little shops make two go-fast boats each year. You pull it into the sun, open 9 cans of gel coat and wipe a finger sample on the bow. Stand back and see the hues of “Nope” this one too red, little blue, some green, etc. Just a thought! It is the “Secret Sauce” episode! Of course gel coat wipes off with a rag and acetone with no damage as it is like colored thin body filler, just a different chemistry thinned with MEK and viscosity adjusted with monomer styrene. Chemistry = better living, better paint + some “UV” additives. Thinking out loud. ASE Master Tech Retired.

As a handy fella I rarely pay another man to do anything as I’m probably a tad overconfident in my ability to do whatever is needed As a career building trades guy I also know very well the difference between doing something and being an absolute pro and what it takes to be at the expert level . . I’m a pro when it comes to commercial glazing applications and my skills do transfer when it comes to working on my house, remodeling etc . What I have learned when it comes to painting a vehicle however is that it’s a skill that absolutely requires a lot of practice to produce a result that I’m happy with . Needless to say I’ve reworked the entire driver side of my truck 3 times and I’m still not fully satisfied. I’ve spent far more trying to do this myself than had I just taking it to the shop. All the prep materials, first bondo then a different bonds then I finally bought the lightweight ever coat which is far easier to work . I’ve gone thru 3 quarts of Toyota 1g3 , first SW, then I tried Lesonal and finally matrix edge which was the best match without a doubt . I tried Wanda clear which I was virtually unable to lay flat. Finally I went with Greentec and I was finally super pleased with the result. Until I had an unfortunate situation occur that landed a bunch of debris in the rear quarter panel section.. ugh. This is tough . I feel like it’s easy to try and rush to spray but that’s a huge mistake. It’s so important to do the proper prep . I have the utmost respect for your skill and knowledge in what you do. I have been thoroughly humbled but i won’t tap out until I’m fully satisfied, I don’t care how many hours it takes . I definitely learned a lot watching you work .

Once again, thank you for the great content. Do you have any previous videos which cover these topics: 1) How much paint to purchase and/or mix vs. size of project, and 2)What to do if your paint cup runs empty while spraying? If not, this may be helpful information, as well. Thanks again!
@sly21962 жыл бұрын
Most paint comes with instructions on how to mix depending where you get it mixed. If you take it to a Auto paint shop they should help you. I live in the UK and my only issue is the price difference between a Spray Can and a Spray gun is a big difference e.g 500ml spray can costs £8 ($11) compare that 500ml of tinned paint is £20 ($27) i can buy 3 cans of paint for the price of 1 tin of paint this does not include Thinners, Activators etc. Primer and Clear are cheaper in tins. The cost of 2 500ml Cans is slightly more expensive then tinned

Hi this is my first time writing in the comment section. I have been watching most of your videos and find them excellent, especially because I am not a body repair person. You make it look simple. I have a question. I purchased a 1978 Eldorado that had a new paint job about 5 years ago. The paint was great and the car was sharp. I had to use my garage so I pulled the Cadillac out and covered it with a tarp under a tree for about 3 days. The weather was about 85 degrees and it rained. When I pulled the cover from the vehicle I noticed that the clearcoat on the hood and the trunk area had huge blisters on it like the clearcoat separated from the paint. What do you think happened and how can I repair this without taking it to a body shop. The paint was not affected, just the clearcoat bubbled and now is flaking off. Thanks for any help I can get from you.

But is there a good way to get a nice finish that close to factory for someone who has never painted before? I've watched almost every video and it looks like there are so many variables, that I'm almost terrified to spend the money on equipment and completely ruin my truck and making it look like I had painted it with rattle cans. What is the best advice for someone like me? I'm really worried it will look dull and orange peel. I planned on using the Astro EUROHE107 EuroPro High Efficiency for Sealer, Base and clear.
