I've been using mine for several months now and still love it. If you have issues with it drying out, add a drop of vegetable glycerin to each. If you have trouble with mold, add a drop of clove bud oil to each, and make sure to open/stir every week or so. If you use tons of water, add a drop of gum arabic to each one (strengthens the binder), which I saw you did. Also I loved that "living dangerously" 🤣 I hope you love your palette as much as I do! It goes with me everywhere. 😄

Mine didn't have the cool water cup with brush holder but I don't mind since I currently mostly use it at home. Love this little box! As of now my favorite Gouache isn't really gouache at all because it's the Holbein acryla gouache which is more of a matte acrylic. It does dry fast being made with acrylic medium, so I use a massive Masterson stay wet tray, maybe I could give this a go. But I love the Windsor newton watercolor too. And I keep those in a travel Altoids mint tin with little Wells made out of polymer clay.

Thanks for such detailed review and so many tips! I'm playing with our local brand called Umton (Czechia). It makes some strange version of gouache with added safflower oil. I like that it makes harder to reactivate the paint when it dries, so good for layering, but also it is impossible to rewet it once it dries in the palette (yep, made that mistake :D). But I don't use these paints as often as I'd like because of the fiddling with tubes and squeezing out etc... I'll see if I can procure this amazing little palette you have, but the shipping from UK is a bit of a nightmare😅.

Thank you for a great video! ☺️ I just received a palette I ordered, it's the Wandic 36 well air tight palette. I found it on Amazon Sweden, but the pictures don't do it justice - it has a mixing area that is stored underneath the palette when closed, but once you open the box you can attach it to the side of your palette! 😍 It's much bigger, of course, but I'm excited to try it out as soon as I'm able to! (Edit:I also like that the wells are a bit "rounded" in the bottom! I imagine it might be a bit kinder to my brushes.)

@@SketchesnScrubs Ha! No problem! The delay has given me time to experiment! :) So I can now confirm that it DOES actually work with acrylics! I actually bought 2 palettes - one for gouache and one for acrylics. It's a great way of reducing what I carry - I don't take all those tubes of paint. (But I do take a separate tube of white.) It saves a lot of time too and I found it really useful for painting competitions in the Sutton parks (where there was time pressure), reducing set-up time and giving me more time to actually paint! Your difficulties with opening that pallet is real, my friend. LOL! With my luck, I would only struggle, and spill paint all over the place, when I’m wearing white. I never spill when I’m wearing dark colored clothes. So my favorite brand of gouache so far is Windsor and Newton. Though Sarah Burns recently (a few months ago?) tried some Schmincke gouache and loved them. Mike, the Mind of Watercolor (also on KZbin) did a brand comparison and Schmincke came out on top. IF and only if, I really get into painting with gouache, I will try it too. Until then, I’ve got WAAAAAAY to much paint already… Maybe when I retire and don’t have a day job… LOL! Talk soon!

I find with adding gum arabic the gouache can thin out and become shiny and a little gloopy when painted with BUT with glycerin-just add 1-2 SMALL drops to each half pan and it transforms the gouache into soft rewetable heaven without all the extra gum arabic shine and gloopy-ness. (Side tip- a little bit of glycerin goes a looong way so only use 1-2 very small drops to paint)...Anyway great video and thanks for sharing. Much ❤

About it being upside down or on the side, It's in my purse on its side for most of its life and I haven't experienced any leaks or color contamination from it being on the side. As for my favorite gouache brand I like all the one that I've tried (holbein, wisnor and newton, himi gouache) but when using my burnt umber from the himi gouache when I mix it with white it turns gray. I don't know if it's just my palette or not as I've been using one watercolor brand dainel smith as I choose to invest in high quality with select colors.

I kept myself from watching this video for a while. This because I hadn't been able to score one of those pallets yet and I did not wanna hype myself up with it before actually being able to get my hands on one. But now the time is there! However, now I find myself hesitant to actually fill up the damn thing as I am a beginner to the medium and find that I am scared to waist paint. Such a stupid thing to fear as the paint is MEANT to be used, but you know, stupid human brain and all that haha. But I will try next week or so. Thank you for the informative video. It has been a couple of months now that you've made it, are you still as happy with the pallete? And do you maybe have some tips/words of caution now that you've used it for a while?

I wonder how the palette is going? The gummy bit is definitely necessary because not only does it prevent the paint from going everywhere but also it would dry out. But yes, I think that's the difficulty in closing it. I have a Qor palette that is completely dry except the Cobalt Turquoise, which has run out of the well TWICE now LOL. It always has the most binder.

@@SketchesnScrubs Thanks for asking! You know I'm rather embarrassed, but I haven't poured mine yet. I have 5 tubes and 24 wells soooo...... I keep wondering if I should buy a few more LOL! Why I didn't buy the smaller size, I'm not sure. I keep thinking I'll add a few pastel pinks and purples that are fugitive but ok for sketchbook, and a green or something, and maybe make a nice floral palette. I just got some new brushes with gouache in mind (some synthetic like a dagger and a long filbert, some flat sable, so they can be used for either medium. Perhaps I'll pour it very soon. Oh yes, I have several palettes in several brands with cobalt turquoise that escaped from it's spot. It seems to be runny in every brand! (must require a lot of binder.)

Hi Sketches n Scrubs, I just purchased one of these but having problems opening the actual palette, I’m concerned about breaking the clip but is it meant to come off in order to flip the palette lid open? It’s a bit technical 😁

Hey Rebecca, sorry for the late reply - did you figure it out? I struggle to explain it in text lol but there are two levers, one is to attach to the cup (lift that first) the other is to close the actual palette (lift that second - that is the one that sticks a bit) x

Ya’ll killing me with picking favorites…it’s like choosing my favorite kitty…😻. Lurve all my babies. I’ll MVP-it by saying my favorite part of your “living dangerously “ is that this lil box has you painting gouache more. That’s a grand return on investment, I say. 💰 Sorry I missed the premiere, kitty snuggles put me back to sleep. Look forward to next week though ⏰.

Great video. I filled the palette but I can't start painting. Why? Because I couldn't figure out how to keep paints in the wells not contaminated by other colors while painting. And every video about this palette is fast forwarding the painting stage and I cannot catch the steps while mixing paint :)) I have a Pelikan opaque watercolor set and all the cakes are messy with other colors because when I adjust the mixes I continuously get one color or other. Rinsing between every touch would be too tedious. Any help appreciated...

Hey! My colours do get a bit contaminated if I’m rushing, but to reduce that I wash my brush in water between colours as I would for any palette. I also don’t use the top to mix, I use a separate mixing palette I hope this helps xx

I want to update after my trial for other viewers. The color on the brush doesn't want to leave the bristles too much anyway because paint in the well doesn't want to take it :) Because it's creamy opposed to my Pelikan set's solid cakes. So it doesn't get too messy after all. Remaining little bits can easily be collected by a cleanish brush. So it's really a game changer palette for me.@@SketchesnScrubs

Himi/Miya is my favorite the amount you get for the price is amazing! I find that even the best professional grade ones are only 1.5 - 2 times as good but 11 times (or more) the price! I do have some Holbein as well but its not 11 times better so.... Basic math! I paint so much more without the guilt of 'wasting' expensive paint. Literally I checked 100 times more! I also get empty half and full pans and premix custom colours and can add in my dr ph martens hydrus (liquid concentrated watercolours) And improve the vibrancy and glow of the gouache! I use magnets and tins. I find I paint very often and pre-wet the paint a bit before (eyedropper) and can totally reactivate if it is at all dried! I haven't noticed a loss in thickness/quality. I don't have any gum arabic yet, but currently want to get some. But I sadly have suffered some mold issues along the way and am sensitive to scents. I even did use only distilled water with it at the time. Mold spores are in the air... My solution is to use a mist spray with isopropyl alcohol and have had no issues since! When I get new gouache now I add some isopropyl and mix it thoroughly! I decided the mold issues were too severe (I started getting ill from it, and I could clearly smell it) So its worth the potential impact on lightfastness, after all I am also using the more fugitive colours and will warn anyone about lightfastness details if I do a commission with himi gouache and currently lightfast testing them. Some are actually more lightfast so knowing which is which is useful. I recommend doing custom mixes I have been painting even more and quicker laying out all the paint. But each person has differing preferred ways to work. Buy what is the best quality for the price based on where you live and what works best for you.

@@SketchesnScrubs the calligraphy gouache us allegedly finer ground so it flows better from a dip pen nib. Not sure if it is still in production as I haven't needed to buy replacement. I know they did discontinue a few colours. There are some demonstration videos from Patricia Lovett ( hope I got that right) who I believe consulted on the development knocking around somewhere on KZbin. You put it in the nib with a brush. Sounds irritating but actually I got the hang of it really quickly and don't even think of it as weird now. The colours are spot on I'd you are trying to get historical type looks. Bright but not lurid if that makes sense. I love gouache as an easily manageable medium to replicate illuminated manuscript. Very flat colour is perfect.
